i would recommend toeing the line when it comes to auditions. pick a song close to the range of the character you want, and sing it if it’s in your range. if it’s not in your range, find a lower key or a different song that showcases your talents
also, on the note of preparing for auditions, print out the lyrics of the part you want to sing, and get a bunch of highlighters. when you practice, highlight the parts that you mess up on or parts that don’t sound how you want them to. then go through the parts you highlighted until they sound how you want them to. then do that a few times with a different colored highlighter everytime until it sounds exactly how you want
i would also find multiple covers of the song online and listen to them so you get a good feel of how you want to personalize the song
