STOP Using Wood Putty Right NOW! Here is Why. | Woodworking Tips and Tricks

- I have been using wood putty for years and I am telling you to stop using it right now. There are many reasons why. But first let me start by telling you this is based on my years of woodworking and experience with wood putty. I have finally just gotten tired of it and its issues. See wood putty doesn't truly fill the holes and gaps and have the longevity I need it to have in my projects. Now that isn't saying you should git rid of it all together. There are some use cases for it but I have discovered that it is about 10% of my projects would benefit from wood putty. There is a much better solution and product to use over wood putty and that is epoxy putty. Epoxy putty is more expensive but it will save you a lot of time and frustration that wood putty offers. Epoxy doesn't crack, it doesn't sag, it is super strong and sands smooth.

I just found and bought two epoxy putties to repair some leaves on a metal outdoor table. It was great! Rock hard, sandable, paintable, and can mold it to any form or even free form, if it's small.

I came here because I joined some wood and I don't like the end results, so I was going to cover with wallpaper, but then I thought how about wood putty. Glad I now know epoxy wood putty exists!!

There are many videos demonstrating to apply primer first, then filler, then 2nd coat of primer. Do you think that is necessary? I feel like skipping the first coat of primer and apply the filler straight to the wood.
Filler strait to the wood is what I do no primer
How does it stain because I’ve been so done with wood putty also. No it doesn’t matter what brand! I’ve tried so many and they are disappointing. Lately I’ve been doing more of a glue/sawdust mixture but still this sounds like a good alternative.
It will not stain like wood putty. That is really the only downfall of epoxy putty. However it is great if you are painting.
I'm trying to fix the end of a spindle of an old rocking chair. What kind of epoxy do you recommend?
That is a good question. I have worked very little with epoxy and only use the epoxy putty for holes. I am not sure the strength it would provide for a spindle
Thanks for the tip, even if the stuff is expensive if there's hardly any gaps or uneven surfaces each project wont really increase in price. You can even use clear epoxy to do the same job on natural wood I would assume. Last time I bought wood filler it was some weird stuff that had the texture of sand, I just threw it out and got Elmer's wood filler which is readily available everywhere even the dollar store. I've used this type of filler to fix the wood behind a door striker plate it dried hard as a rock that was 8 years ago forgot about it until this video.
Yeah wood filler has its ups and downs. I really like the epoxy putty. I would think that you could do something similar with clear epoxy but that isn't really a putty.
What could I use to bond a wooden picture frame. ?? Leaving the natural wood color tho
I would only recommend using it for painted applications.
Does it expand and contract with the wood? Or am I eventually going to have gaps from the wood pulling away unless I seal and paint it?
No it doesn’t I have not had any cracks
I use PC Woody 2 part. Its amazing, you can sand it or chisel it. You can build it up over multiple applications. Wood putty is almost like caulk, it wont hold long.

I have a hollow door that I use as a workbench. Over the years it's gotten worn through in spots. like 1"x3" holes. Can't use anything runny because it will just sink into areas I don't need and will be a waste of time and product. And it does not have to match or look nice. Just need it strong enough to plug the holes and stays flat, flush and I can continue to use the workbench top as usual and to quit losing hardware and such into the holes. lol Any suggestions?
Epoxy putty should do the job
Add Adam I’m doing we have another 10 2 foot wide wooden posts with lots of cracks I spent the day going around filling everything up and then another guy spent the day going around sanding everything back down because there’s so many hairline fractures and we’re trying to get everything waterproof before getting it sealed. That took a long time and some mistakes were made because it kept seizing up and we got it on the decking. I’m still only doing $16 an hour if anybody has any help full advice for a beginner that would be great because I’ve only been doing this a couple of months and I’m eager to be making as much as I can by the end of the year.

What kind of epoxy did you use? I'm planning to redo my kitchen cabinets and they have the late 70s decorative groves. I want to fill them in before paint. I also want them to last and look amazing so I'm looking for the very best filler. Thx!

Thanks for this video, will it accept satin enamel latex paint; more importantly would it show a different sheen from repaired portion versus the non repaired portion next to it? Color will be white. I have a patio cover and some sort of wood putty was used to fill nail holes, after several coats of outdoor satin enamel latex paint….the nail holes with putty have a shiny sheen versus all rest.
I have used white enamel and never noticed any sheen difference. I have not tested stain

Whats it look like when u stain it ?
depending on the color of your wood it drys rather beige so if you have dark wood it would be lighter but stained if that makes since.
