    i have to admit, every time i saw spoon and fork jewellery anywhere i felt very meh about it, because they still screamed "spoon!!!" when you looked at them. but yours look so cool and unique, that i'm now tempted to experiment with spoons as well, which i didn't think would happen in a million years bahaha :D i love the pelican spoon, an element like this could also look so cool as a signet ring. the fact that soldering or even annealing those is potentially risky, can definitely be used as a way to make you think outside the box and try and get the result you want using other methods than the ones you'd normally use :D

      same with me! Although I liked some of them, as the resembled a shield, so I liked those. But other than that, not a big fan. Until I realised that I could try these unusual ones! I rembered seeing them at antique fairs and decided to go look for them in antique shops. And I like what you said, these materials that are other than silver can help us think outside of the box and get creative! :))

    Hiya Lady Stardust, I'm sitting here listening to the sleet hit the window courtesy of the latest storm to hit the UK. What a great way to lift my spirits, watch Basia transform teaspoons! I've seen coins being made into rings, the first time for spoons though, trust Basia to come up with something new. Those spires looked a bit lethal at first, a quick file and bending in later and perfect. What a clever tool. Thank you for a wonderful video, perfectly shot and edited, again. I did like the medallion one. Great use of what you had.
    Stay safe, Steve...

      Ahh, thank you so much, Steve! I'm very happy that you enjoyed this video and the whole project idea 😀 I must admit, the idea isn't mine, I've seen many people make spoon rings, it's actually quite popular! 😀 But I wanted to add my own twist to it and create something using an original item from an antique shop. Something, that I haven't seen being turned into jewellery before. Like these decorative spoons!
      Hahaha, lethal indeed! 😂 I was worried if these sharp edges wouldn't be too dangerous, but luckily buffing them helped a lot.
      As for the storm, you won't believe me, but I do miss these English storms! We also have some stronger winds here now, but it's not the same. I know they are dangerous and could cause damage, but I've gotten used to their sounds so much and miss them here 🥰 Stay safe xx

    Hi. I truly like your way of explaining & constructing new articles.
    Just wanna ask something about a common problem with artificial jewellery. Hope you will address it.
    How to repolish an article if its colour is faded ?
    Also if you can explain as why colour faints in first place ?
    I have watched your tutorials but unable to find the exact answer
    If you had already covered this topic in the past , can you please share the link ?
    Would appreciate.

    Great project! What is the metal? I can imagine you definitely wouldn't want to anneal anything plated. Those look like silver, hallmarked..

    • @TheArtOfMetalsmithing
      @TheArtOfMetalsmithing  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      The ones with buildings are certainly silver (although the man at the antique shop told me they were plated, so I think he might not be sure or maybe he mixed them up with other spoons?), the one with flower is definitely not entirely silver. I think it used to be enamelled, but there was hardly anything left on it and it was alright to anneal it. I'm going to examine the spoons some more to see if I can determine what they are for sure

    • @user-pd7cq666
      @user-pd7cq666 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dear Basia, I certainly wouldn't argue with the salesman in this case. Although the patina on these Dutch spoons is distinctive for silver, the silver itself may indeed be merely a coating on neusilber. It may just be a light effect, but it seems to me that in the final shot at 9:18 the Waterpoort Sneek ring is little bit more yellowish than the Munsterkerk Roermond and the Dom Utrecht rings. If so, it's cos you've scraped the coating off it. Although neusilber is very close in colour to silver, cutlery made of it should be coated by silver because this alloy itself has a zinc taste. You can check it just by licking the Waterpoort Sneek ring:)

    • @TheArtOfMetalsmithing
      @TheArtOfMetalsmithing  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      One of the spoons, the one with the flower, wasn't silver and I don't think it was even plated. I would say it depends on what you want to use them for. Any spoon can be turned into a cool ring! The only limit is your own imagination. However, you might need to choose only the silver ones if you want to sell spoon rings that are silver

    I'm not sure, but it seems to me that the top three spoons at 1:30 are made of melchior. If so, the rings you made from these spoons could cause an allergy to nickel for the people who will be wearing it. I advise you to check the metal with silver nitrate.

    • @TheArtOfMetalsmithing
      @TheArtOfMetalsmithing  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think that's very likely! They're definitely not just silver (if they even have any silver at all that is ;P). Wasn't going to offer them for sale anyway, but it's a good thing to keep in mind for future, so thanks for pointing that out

    • @user-pd7cq666
      @user-pd7cq666 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I remembered one very simple way to identify melchior: depending on nickel content in the alloy, it is either impossible or very difficult to melt it with a butane torch. You can also try this.
