This trench series is top notch, right up there with your best stuff. All your best videos combine ingenuity, playability and a strong aesthetic. I've seen loads of trench boards over the years and it's always been a style of board I really wanted, but I'm just dead against fixed board layouts. Storage, replayability, it's just so much to dedicate to one fixed layout. I've seen gorgeous boards but thought "yeah, but play 2-3 games on there and you've sort of done it all". This is typical of what I really like about your work - it's thinking from outside that box and focused on playability and modularity, but also through your skill at your craft you've got it looking brilliant with a really distinct aesthetic, and it can be built from really cheap and readily available materials. It'll be a couple of years before I'm able to build something like this, but I will, and it's gonna be awesome when it's done. Hope you have a lot of fun gaming on this!
I really want to do this, but I think I need to do it on removable scatter pieces. I'm worried they'd all break off when transporting/storing if I added them to the actual tiles.
Secondary thought, you could turn this into a battlefield in a graveyard, but then not only would you need gravestones, you would need corpses half exposed from underground.
I saw a short from someone who turned dollhouse scale picket fence into modular rope bridges. Based on that build, the thing I am thinking is you could use wire and/or string to make barbed wire hazards of various sizes to place as difficult terrain (to use a D&D phrase) scatter pieces. It could be anything from a simple fence to a three-dimensional maze built to stop or slow down attackers, or force them into registered fire lanes.
A few pieces of scatter terrain would go great with this. Perhaps some barbed wire, sandbag walls, or big piles of crosses/bodies/artillery shells, or even a downed zepplin/bi-plane would go great for no-mans-land scatter.
I really like the look of the "above ground" trench crusade that can be arranged as you please, instead of digging into foam to make trenches inside the board. This seems to give you a lot of flexibility if you want to change the board layout.
A thing I really like about the last videos, as well as the Idols of Torment builds is the variety of grimdark without going the GW route. Not hating on GW, just loving the different approaches. Really inspiring
when making a big cut like that, tape yardsticks on either side of the cut line. This will keep the cut from wandering even if you are not a free hand master.
The one thing I think the demonic side would do is put those enemies that were crucified up on the top of the trench as psychological weapon & it would allow you to build a piece of unique equipment that would only be on the demonic side of the board (as in a method of raising the crucified into position). Just an idea, to help really sell the demonic side. Also just think how visually interesting it would be to be looking at that playing against that faction. Great video and great build.
I love the look of the corrugated metal with the religious iconography crudely plastered on around the trench. It really gives the vibes of faithful soldiers establishing theit front as a sort of holy site. I can see a soldier walking down the trenches before the battle sticking up pages of the bible while reciting prayers. Its such a simple idea but so well executed
You're a master of dark atmosphere using humble ingredients! These pieces ooze the griminess, desperation, and fear of a centuries-long war. It's going to be so immersive when you get to play!
Freehanding long straight cuts is difficult. You can secure a metal straight edge to the foam face with glue and tape that acts as a guide, it works surprisingly well.
Loving the series. I've been going back and watching your other videos and your increase in cinematography is noticeable, good work man. Also, just got my copy of Idols and looking forward to it when I finish models and terrain!
Those bloody crucified bodies really brought it home. Keep up the amazing work on this series! And if you're playing video games these days, check out Witchfire. Has a very similar aesthetic to Trench Crusade.
This is gorgeous, thank you for sharing this! Please make a bunker for the very underrepresented legions of Hell!! Some terrain decor ideas: a golden calf, Pazuzu statue, Goetic seals, ritual sigil on the floor, desecrated altars, desecrated ark of the covenant, crucified Christians... 🖤
Your passion for projects is one of my favorite things about your channel. Your interest and enthusiasm for games inspires me to explore new games and crafts for those games.
I just made a Barn with posters. I didn’t have a lot of ink left in my printer, so I printed in black and white and then painted on coffee. It weathered the poster pretty well.
I love your Trench Crusade stuff. You are always so imaginative - like the dark side not only hanging up posters on their side but also cuicified victims! 😈 Loking forward to the minis!
Something I think could really elevate your no man’s land and something that it’s missing. It’s empty! No busted up tanks or trucks, no dead bodies or half buried barbed wire, no anti trench sieges like spikes or undetonated artillery shells. Maybe some muddy puddles of water in those craters. I think some of these things could also give your minis cover while on no man’s land and essentially create a whole different dimension to the game board :)
Another cool idea for this terrain could be taking one of those 2s2 peices at full size and using it as the base of a stepped command bunker/stepped ziggurat for the middle of a board maybe the highest level of it could just be a walled enclosure for some artillery or a ritual site.
That’s really cool. Something to consider is that most trenches in WW1 weren’t straight lines they would be zigzagging to reduce casualties from an explosive going off . I’ve never played trench crusade so maybe making it a straight line is easier for the gameplay, If so, disregard what I’m saying but I think it would be cool for the trenches to be zigzagged a little bit.
The small Details Like those crosses and the Posters really Work. Overall my favorite piece done by you, i am so hyped for Trench Crusade and very motivated to build my own Game board
This whole project is coming on really well. Once we get some models and scatter set out it's going to look so good. The demonic side could have used a few more details I think, it looks a bit bare IMO. Maybe a bunch of skulls, severed hands etc to mirror the crosses on the other side?
@@BlackMagicCraftOfficial Also, I replied on another comment about barbed wire, but the comment seems to have gone. If you want to do quite a bit of work, but have amazing looking wire, search for "Nurgle's Rope - How to make realistic barbed wire"
Great build and a genius way to fill space on a bigger table with something realistic to the environment. If you’re looking for hellish paintings in future builds, have a look at Goya (eg Saturn Devouring his Children), and Hieronymus Bosch
Man I would love to see this terrain and you show up on Play On Tabletops channel. Such an amazing terrain for a really interesting game. Amazing work as always!
Maybe you could use plasticard strips to shape the vertical corrugated sheets to look like containers. Like they stacked containers as a dam or wall for the earth.
I’d love to see a couple set pieces; a concrete cross bunker shrine with lots of exposed rebar peaking out of the cross, maybe with the lower edge plastered with missing persons posters and the same religious shrine iconography, or the corpse of an angel as a kind of rubble pile with some more organic elements. Biblically accurate angel corpse terrain would be a particularly neat challenge. Loving this series so far man.
I'm really not interested in the vibe or premise of Trench Crusade, but I love the terrain you're making for it. I would love to play a Wh40K game of Imperial Guard vs. Orks with that terrain. It's great to see your passion for this particular style of terrain as well!
Awesome! It would be really cool if you started a second channel for Actual Play showing off your terrain. I am always starved for good quality content and you have the ability to have the best boards on the internet. Could also be a great way of bringing more people to Idols
4:23 This dense type of foam is best carved by a handheld hotwire tool, the one that looks like letter Y. You can get the base of the crater pretty fast and than you just need to roughen up the edges.
Interesting game concept. I'll ask my son if he's interested. Thanks for the video. FYI, Impaled corpse models may be another good accessory for the heretics.
@@BlackMagicCraftOfficial TC seems to be more about body horror at this point, my opinion might change in the future, but for the moment, I can imagine purity seals being placed onto Space Marines to "Batushka". With TC? I'm just imaging people being cut down in a meat grinder while "We Eat Our Young" or "Your Disposal" plays. With certain factions maybe even "Body Farm". I can imagine the heretic faction getting down to some "Zeal & Ardor" as well, "hold your head low" etc. Seriously dig your metal knowledge though.
fuck yeah I love this series!!! I would love to see a huge structure of some sort, maybe even a crashed plane or airship or something that would add some verticality to the board!
YES! I think I'm going to do some of the official models first, and then do some weird kitbashes once I have the official ones to act as a comparison/guide for scale and style.
people are saying you should add piles of bodies to no mans land, and while I agree I also think that doesn't go far enough. you see in trench warfare when you lose some one or something in no mans land its gone for good, so bodies we just left where they lay, and since this war has been going on for hundreds of years the ground should be like 70% bodies by now. I think that would good super hard and fit with the vibe of the game. that being said I'm no sure how you would go about implementing that. I have some ideas, like a gunned down squad still in formation or maybe bodies sinking into the mud, it would definitely be cool if you had a victim of the black grail trying to claw their way out. still you are doing amazing work and look forward to what you do next!
some more angles of the trench would have been more realistic. I have printed some blown up trees and created little scatter terrain, also some barbed wire and have an old premade crater set for scatter. To finish it all off I added my tea light candle smoke stacks to bring the table to life haha. so good
I like the idea that whoever loses a Trench Crusade match has to take their forces downstairs to play Idols of Torment. Death is no escape!

I really want to do this, but I think I need to do it on removable scatter pieces. I'm worried they'd all break off when transporting/storing if I added them to the actual tiles.
Maybe best to avoid too literal references or it’ll be a big gross. But neat idea.
I love the idea of a field of crosses, but IDK why it would be in no mans land.
Perhaps a field of Czech Hedgehogs or Dragons Teeth with cross motifs?
Secondary thought, you could turn this into a battlefield in a graveyard, but then not only would you need gravestones, you would need corpses half exposed from underground.

Some crucifixion groups in No Man's Land closer to the Heretic side to strike fear into their enemies.

Sooo awesome! Especially the final detailing on both sides really brings the piece to life.
You could cut down some tile spacers, those little plastic white crosses, if 3D printing them is a pain. They're very cheap and easy to get hold of.
That works good for bigger crosses, these I printed are way smaller than any tile spacers available.
I’m going to have access to my crafting supplies over winter break. I don’t care if I ever use it, I’m making at least one trench piece.
Thank you for taking us along the crusade. Looking forward to the models!
The jumpscare of the crucified victims popping up on screen got me a little lol, good paint job!
