honestly seeing it made me wanna cry. i was turned into a social outcast in elementary school because of my adhd, i had trouble controlling my energy and controlling myself from acting on some of my weird intrusive thoughts because of my adhd, and teachers didnt really like me because i struggled to pay attention, turn work in on time, or make good grades. being accepted like this feels so good and i wish i had a teacher like her when i was young.

My boyfriend has adhd and when he was in elementary school he was referred to as a “terror” and his parents couldn’t figure out that he had adhd right away and he actually ended up going to a different school in 3rd grade because the school didn’t want him there. He is so smart and is currently a grade below me but is taking classes above mine and his parents tried to get him in my grade but they wouldn’t let him because he “wasn’t socially ready” and that’s only because he hated the kids in his grade because they didn’t treat him well. Now the school is wishing they moved him up a grade because he’s not challenged enough even with all the advanced classes he’s taking currently but since he graduates in 2 years it’s too late to move him up a grade. Schools need to be more accommodating and understanding.

Hi people, I think it may be slightly invalidating. It's not because their ADHD doesn't fully look like yours or somebody else's that they don't have it or aren't living with it! This thing evolves differently in every patient and has quite a lot of forms, and maybe it was stronger when this person was a kid. Everybody has their own version of "massive" and a diffe rent life story, and treatments can be adjusted so you feel great as well !

@@thaischapman776 To be honest, I thought everything was a good idea except for the noise level light system. We had a teacher who employed a similar system, except with a noise level meter that she would place a magnet on to indicate how loud the class was being. That meter was extremely frustrating for us. I would add that she placed punishments next to each level, so that may be why we found it so irritating. I would be interested to know how the children in her class respond to it if it remains non-verbal and has no attached punishments.
Another thing to consider is the fact that usually when such systems are set up, teachers remove themselves from the equation, and if noise levels rise too much and it is followed by punishment, what follows is resentment between students since students will always identify who the problem students are which leads to a vicious cycle of those children acting more rebellious, and therefore being more and more disliked.
I wonder what other people think though?

That’s really lovely and a extremely creative way to keep her classroom looking nice and organized. It’s sad because I’m assuming that a lot of the items she used to make her classroom work that way, she probably had to purchase herself, Since unfortunately teachers do not have a proper budget to allow for all this things, at least I know for a fact it’s like that in Ontario Canada as well as some places in the states.

I was _just_ thinking that. I went into STEM, but literally every girlfriend I have went into early childhood education. The ones that work in certain communities spend thousands on extras and better supplies. Breaks my heart. So many of the kids have serious behavioral issues, and some of my friends have been actually frightened by a couple kids. They're told to pass kids thru that don't have firm grasps on the year's materials, too, & the parents don't want to hear their children need additional help. These kids are just slipping thru the cracks, & their own parents don't gaf.

I went 22 years undiagnosed with ADHD until I was literally dismissed from college, and still it took another year for someone to mention that diagnosis. Seeing teachers like this acknowledging fidgets and using visual reminders makes me emotional knowing these things make a huge difference for some kids, especially the ones who struggle in secret and don’t get accommodations yet

@@Izlandprincess1 I’m Jamaican too and I remember in primary school my teachers literally had to ask parents to help them purchase school supplies. Because of how bad it was the teacher would literally give us A’s if we brought things. In basic school my mom had to buy me a little chair so that I could have somewhere to sit in class, pay for the bowls and cups we used for lunch, pay for my cubbies, pay for paints and paper for art projects EVERYTHING. I was in a private school too so you think they would have provided it especially since the fees were so high… some kids were struggling really bad bc after tuition they couldn’t afford much so my mom would do these little parties and use the entry fees to purchase supplies for the kids who didn’t have them. That's not completely true, in primary schools the teachers usually do have their own classroom and just sometimes wander off to other rooms, whenever they need to teach another class. But they're pretty bound to one class. ;)
And in higher school forms, the class as a group has the classroom, so the class teacher can also help to make the classroom more "homely".
As a primary teacher to be, I definitely already think about certain stuff I can put into my classroom later on :D
