Our district takes middle schoolers to Washington DC every spring. When I was younger and went it was DRILLED into us that we MUST be respectful in DC and anywhere we went. The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier was even more so. We had a small hiccup when we were there for the changing of the guard. A friend of mine was standing by me and a bird POOPED on him!! Do you know how difficult it was for 9th graders (we were still in junior high then) not too lose it when something like that happens? Also when we went we were not allowed to wear anything with logos or words on it.
Is it respectful to twirl your gun around like a baton instead of just doing your duty and checking the weapon and moving on? How does making it a circus add respect?
Let's set this straight, as a Marine, this honor does not fall to us, that folks, belong to the old guard, United States Army , rain sleet, snow sunshine, day and 365 days a year they are on guard, thank you for your service and you honor of duty, semper Fi.
I never understood why this garnered so much praise, but I think I am starting to understand. Is this a particular set of manuevers, done in a particular order? Or, is it just random? I am getting the notion that is a certain set of acts that had to be remembered in a particular order, which is much more impressive than I had first realized. The hand-eye coordination is fairly awe-inspiring, too. It's not like he is twirling it like a baton. It is very deliberate and strong. Either way, this is a man of the brotherhood, a man that served his country. Not much more on this Earth you could do that would capture my appreciation and admiration than that. Our soldiers are receiving a startling increase in criticism, and deplorable decline in respect. Thank you, to this man for his service, and any other of any branch.
What many viewing this may not realize is the reason for the countless hours of drill and repetition to achieve this level of precision. As a tomb guard, this is a show of respect to all those who gave everything. Amen.
Wait you mean you can’t just pick up a rifle and knock that out on the first try?🤦🏻♂️ No one watching this believes anything but countless hours of drilling go into this.
A story: A man fires a rifle for many years, and he goes to war. And afterward he turns the rifle in at the armory, and he believes he’s finished with the rifle. But no matter what else he might do with his hands, love a woman, build a house, change his son’s diaper; his hands remember the rifle. Anthony Swofford

I never would have known how special these tomb guards are had it not been for Mike talking about his experience as a guard. I think our military should do more videos about the actuall total discipline it takes to be a guard! I was fascinated to learn about them
I think that's really where he picked up the skill. I mean he has an entire video talking about how him and his sgt had all the flare with it. Hardest job available to him, hours a day, every day, for 2 years I think
Can't remember his kids birthday's and barely his anniversary. Has trouble finding his car keys in the morning, but years later, every step in this is hard wired into his brain.
This is the Old Guard or the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier guards. Part of their daily practices is doing what he is doing as they have The Changing of the Guard. One Guard inspecs the weapon that the other presents, ceremoniously insuring that the soldier is ready and prepared to protect the graves of the fallen heroes. Wow what a great insight
@Craig J what’s dumb about it I understand you have a right to your opinion but the tomb of the unknown soldier is a part of history and it’s remains will be guarded 24/7 365
True. I'm thinking though that he probably works with his hands regularly, judging by his dexterity. Muscle memory is only as good as the muscle you keep.

What you said is Not Disrespectful it's a Compliment. With Practice comes Skill. With Skill comes Art. With Art you have Beauty. This Drill is about Skill, Discipline, and Showmanship. The Skill and Discipline are for those that have Fallen. The Showmanship is for those that come to see the Guards and pay Respect to the Fallen.

I am always in awe when I watch the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Solemn. Professional. Respectful.
There used to be a video on YT of the changing of the guard where the inspecting officer accidently plunged the bayonet into the soldier's foot. The soldier barely, & I mean barely, reacted.

The amount of pride in Country and Duty is absolutely amazing.

An understatement to show the fallen that they’re being watched over eternally by the living.

Yep the dedication of a guard of the unknown soldier
I miss doing those drills. Spot on!
