This video shares basic information about some terminology surrounding the teaching of emergent and beginning reading. It focuses on the definitions and distinctions between phonological awareness, phonemic awareness, and phonics.
    In a nutshell:
Phonological awareness is the broader awareness of sound and is auditory.
Phonemic awareness is the awareness of the smallest units of sound in a word and the ability to segment, blend, isolate, and manipulate those smallest individual units of sound. It is auditory.
Phonics is the relationship between phonemes and graphemes. It is learning the rules and patterns of the letter-sound relationship.

I am currently studying for the NH Foundations of Reading test and this video clearly explained Phonological Awareness, Phonemic Awareness and Phonics. I have already passed my Praxis Core & Praxis 2 for Elem. Ed, but I SOOO needed to watch this video as a refresher! I am in my senior year with 2 classes left and I have not had anyone explain it as well as you did. Thank you!!! :)

Very Well Done! I believe that we should push for a National Phonological Testing Program. This would help in keeping our children from slipping through the Phonemic Education Crack that most of us unknowingly slipped through when we went to school, and is widening everyday. It is our obligation to protect our young, and old from continuous ignorance. FR

Excellent delivery of conventional wisdom, Peggy! However, I hope you will consider four changes to what you were taught:
    (1) Say "English language has 52 letters" (26 upper + 26 lower)
Aa Bb Cc Dd Ee Ff Gg Hh Ii Jj Kk Ll Mm Nn Oo Pp Qq Rr Ss Tt Uu Vv Ww Xx Yy Zz
And be sure your students know that none of these letters are vowel sounds or consonant sounds, although some are used to SPELL both!
A pure sounds-based perspective (ABCs are subservient) will require you to:
    (2) Say "different letters SPELL different sounds" (letters don't technically make sounds)
    (3) Say "map SPELLINGS onto individual sound units"
    (4) Say "SOUND/letter relationship" (because spoken language precedes written)
    Happy teaching!

Spanish has it's own set of rules. It is not 'easy' to read as a second language speaker.
