@@sfhnnx3 no, not really. Results don't tell the whole story. The H2H is a good example, Djokovic leads Fed but most of their matches (+60%) were played during or after Novak's prime (he also avoids Roger in 2017 but Roger didn't avoid Novak in 2013). And courts slowing down has also been a huge factor in Djokovic and Nadal's dominance for at least 7-8 years (2008-2016). I don't think either of them are better players than Federer (and honestly most people agree that the Swiss has the better technique out of all three), but the game became a lot more physical for several years leading to endless grinding favoring both successors. And I say this as a Nadal fan. Btw, I don't like Djokovic as a symbol, the guy is a douche, but if I actually believed he was more gifted than Roger I wouldn't have a problem admitting to it.
Not at the moment, but to insinuate Roger serve was really good and somehow it's not anymore since the last time he played is ridiculous..let's see when Roger comes back one last time..
2007 and Djokovic was already third seed at age 20, a few months away from his first grand slam, he was the "next gen" back then, nowadays I had waited for years for many "nest gen" to step up and they still cant, the tour was stronger and healthier in those days
@@kiklocus4660 Those guys are the best in tennis history. What was Jordan doing when he was over 35, now Messi and Ronaldo over 35... Some people r just whole other level
The most fearful thing about this federer was he would not miss any chance to attack, all his forehand shots are going for a winner and this guy could produce them all day, no matter how much you defend the ball, the game wouldn't become any slower and you won't have a chance to recover, you would have to create an opening or push him back to win the point, he smashes all the lobs, kill almost all the balls at the net, a god like unpredictable serve.I guess that's why there were only Nadal and Davydenko who beat federer in the entire 2006, Such a monster Kudos to Novak, his game is so destructive here, he is competing so well, he had his chances in both the sets, I think he wasn't mentally strong back then. I think his 2011 version is the evolved version of this level. Nowadays he doesn't play even close to this level and relies on other player's mistakes, not a bad strategy but less entertaining lol. Anyways brilliant match.
Federer hitting those days was smooth as silk but still massively destroying guys on the other side of the net. Djokovic's aggressiveness is gone today.
Djokovic doesn’t need to hit aggressively nowadays though. With the slowed down surfaces and the young guys being mostly nutcases, he can just play wall and let the other guy self-destruct.
Djokovic's aggressiveness is not gone at all. He has played smarter over the last decade than 2007. Djokovic doesn't just wait for any unforced errors from his opponents. That's the typical fake narrative spreading by his haters. *Djokovic is an aggressive baseline player.* He likes to be in control and dictate play. Novak rely on the strength of his groundstrokes to move opponents around the court and aggressively goes for winners from the back of the court. He attacks short balls in the court, and takes the chance at making a few unforced errors in order to hit That's how he won 20GS, 354 weeks as #1, 35 masters1000 and 7 ending season as #1. 🎾🥇🏆 You can't have 25 victories or more in career against respectively Nadal & Federer without aggressiveness. That's a absurd and salty statement....
As a fan of Djokovic, I think you're right. He changed his style to present more consistency instead of aggressiveness. It doesn't mean that he just hits the ball back and waits for opponent's errors. He becomes the classic counter style player, which is the most effective or dangerous style in tennis nowadays.
The way Federer played here was quite different than the past few years. The court or the ball were playing faster it seemed. While Djokovic was already showing some glimpses of his powerful returns.
Yup; the administrators slowed down the game. People don't realise how different that makes things. Imagine Agassi-Sampras on slower courts with slower balls. Imagine Federer's title tally if the courts and balls hadn't been slowed down.
100%, I often think the same. Fed would have probably got 10 US opens and more Oz opens as well. Sampras would have been lucky to win a slam with the way the courts play now. It's like the French open on hard courts now days. @@amanzaidi6102

Federer in 2009 AO was awesome as well. Only struggled against an in-form Berdych before the final. He had perhaps his best (or 2nd best) performance ever against Delpo for example. It's crazy how at 2:03 whenever you saw prime Federer get fed a shot like that to his forehand, you basically just knew the point was over. His forehand was of another world. I also can't believe how much Djokovic choked in this match. He could have won this. He was up 6-5, 40-0 on his serve in the first set, choked, got broken, and lost in the tiebreak. In the 2nd set he was up 4-1, and lost that set in a tiebreak as well. The 3rd set he just lost clean, but this match could have easily had Djokovic up 2 sets to 0.
At this point, Djoko still had room for improvement; Fed was still in the zone, hitting freely and scoring incredibly angled forehand winners out of nowhere
Peak Laver, Nastase, McEnroe (13 titles and an 82-3 record in '84 - still the best in the Open era. Seven doubles titles too in '84 including Wimbledon and the WCT Finals) or peak Sampras? No question though that Federer was sensational in his peak years.
It was a great final. I remember the RF "black knight" of the 2007 US Open following the "white knight" at Wimbledon. And Djokovic was already a very strong up and coming player who was starting to threaten RF.
2 huge double faults from Novak at critical moments in the first set Something you would rarely if ever see him do as his career progressed Guy was only 20 years old and was up to world no 3 But Federer He was at the peak of his powers at that time Damn near unbeatable
This match shows how athleticism and power (and a good return) just don't cut it against a player who just masters every aspect of the game of tennis. Not even counting this match, Head to Head stats counted fairly, namely in the years where they were both in their prime, 2008-2012 Djokovic: 11 Federer: 12
No, it's just a result of court speed. Courts have become so homogenous now that people forget how much difference that used to make and how much of a different game you needed to win on grass vs clay. Novak simply couldn't play the way he plays now due to how fast the courts were. This hurt Federer as time went on and helped Nadal and Novak. For example, no way Nadal wins a single Wimbledon if courts were kept as fast as they were in the 90s. Novak maybe not either. For further evidence of court speed making a difference, look at how an old near-retirement Federer in 2019 did against Novak at Wimbledon (almost beat him) and ATP Finals. The latter is a notoriously fast surface. Just watch highlights of that match vs this one, and it will look eerily similar how aggressive Federer can play and Novak doesn't have answers there.
Federer fans can deny all they want but djokovic has improved a lot since then. There is much less opportunity to attack his shots these days and his decision making is miles better.
Lol djokovic fans can deny all u want. Peakest of the peak of prime djokovic lost to grandpa fed in 2011 french open. If they meet at their respective peaks.. U know hu wins.. Lol!
Looking back now, the writing was on the wall all along. Novak really had chances here, and up against possibly the best version of Fed.It's bittersweet to think the era of the of the Big 3 draws to an end. On one hand, fresh blood, but on the other, the greatest Tennis of all time, likely never to be repeated.
A few things, while certain elements of Djokovics game has remained the same or improved, its stunning to see how much his served has changed, and its also stunning to see how much of a complete player he has become as compared to here where he is in essence an offensive baseliner. Second, I am glad that they introduced the shot clock for serves, because dang, Novak's 50000 ball bounces before serves is definitely a tactic to waste time. Also, the improvement in how Novak has become such a mental giant, he is impossible to break in the mind now
Fed overtook Sampras around age 20. Djoker couldn't beat Fed until Fed was about 30 and Djoker 25. Then still up 2 match points at age 37. Fed is GOAT.
@@Romans8-9 You have no idea. Look up the news archives it was reported at the time. Fed said he was ill during the Aus Open but the doctors did not properly diagnose that he had mononucleosis until after the open.
@@oot007 He got it in December 07, he didn´t have it during the tournament, there is no way he would have even made a GS semi final if he had mono during the tournament. He said he felt sluggish at the start of the year, to say he lost to Novak because of mono, is straight up excuse-making.
I can think that after playing his first final in a Grand Slam and losing it to the one who was the best player of the moment, Nole could only think that one day he would try to win as much as he did and be considered a tennis legend.
Miss the wide open Arthur Ashe Stadium, despite the roof being better in case of bad weather. The acoustics and echoing of the shots along with the umpire calls across the massive stadium were majestic back then!
Absolutely no doubt about it. Federer remains my favourite player, but I would rate Novak's post-match sportsmanship over that of everybody else, including the Swiss.
Honestly, I think this is an "experience comes with time" moment. A few more years and Djokovic could resist the pressure of being, say, 4-1 or 6-5 (40-0) at an advantage and go on to take his advantage and win with it. It's not as easy as you might think.
This match is the reason why Djokovic has beaten Federer many times in slams. He missed many opportunities in this match and learned from it. The same leads that Djokovic blew in this match, Federer would blow for many matches afterwards.
Federer was physically in peak form then and his muscle power probably at his own peak too. Believe it or not that decreases a lot past 30 with age in elite sports especially with Federer's power, aggressive and pin-pointed accuracy based game. Of course Djokovic improved by leaps and bounds too. On grass again Federer could get him, 2012 with whatever power he had left since grass is technically a faster surface. But then it was one-sided in slams from then on until 2019 (Federer lost but it was closer than any match). That was because Federer changed his racquet, and style and tactics. I know and believe that as beautiful as it looks, Federer's single-handed backhander is his Achilles heel. Most players learnt and exploited it a lot.
@@sagniksingha yes he is not in prime, but the level was close and he has wayy more experience. He played well enough to get to matchpoints. This is a Achievement to Nole more than Federer... Who has been no.1 for +3 years now and +9-10 grand slam winner... Nole was just a Kid... Who got his revenge AO 5 Months Later
Federer played amazing in this match…I think this version of Federer was probably his peak. Later in his career he had so many more weaknesses and flaws in his game. Also after losing many close matches to djokovic and Nadal, his mental game took a huge hit. Later on his career you could see Federer struggle mentally and exhibit so many moments of mental frailty. Here, he played cold blooded tennis and gave the middle finger to djokovic whenever djokovic had a moment to gain the upper hand in the match.
This is tennis at its best. if you take a player's maximum strength as a benchmark, roger federer is without a doubt the greatest tennis player of all time.
Times when Federer played really well, without making mistakes of all sorts, loosing to every possible major opponent. His career was probably short lived, he just went on and in playing, but after some point he was never that Federer anymore. Still my favourite player, love him.
This wasn't the prettiest match. Djokovic was choking here and Federer's game seemed kinda off. Still you could see how hard and clean Federer used to hit the ball and how well Djokovic moved and read the game at an early age.

this is a reminder that djokovic can choke as well.he had 3 set points on his serve in the 1st set and in the 2nd he had a break advantage.federer's mentality was beyond good in that match.
Any player can choked or get nervous, but in this it's understandable, it was his first gs final against the dominant n1 at the time with 20yrs, Federer choked so much more Even with rivals who werent that dangerous, it's more a problem with his mental Game than just ocational chokes, he Even loosed a 40-15 in Montreal against Djokovic this same year too
Djokovic was such a kid back then, crazy. He dominated the first and second set, yet was not capable of closing those sets mostly due to his mental weakness back then. Today it's the exact opposite. 2006 and 2007 (08 and 09 weren't bad, but Federer was starting to go down) were the last great years for Federer, after that Nadal and Djokovic were way too strong for him.
2017 was a great year for Federer (the great comeback at Australian Open and winning Wimbledon without losing a set). He dominated Nadal between 2017-2019. 2011 could have been a great year. 2012 had great Federer moments.
@@Dark_Voice It's a difficult conversation to have, yes Nole started playing like a god from 2011 but a major factor is that hard courts got much slower as well. This massively helped Nole and Rafa's game and hurt Roger's game.

The most fearful thing about this federer was he would not miss any chance to attack, all his forehand shots are going for a winner and this guy could produce them all day, no matter how much you defend the ball, the game wouldn't become any slower and you won't have a chance to recover, you would have to create an opening or push him back to win the point, he smashes all the lobs, kill almost all the balls at the net, a god like unpredictable serve.I guess that's why there were only Nadal and Davydenko who beat federer in the entire 2006, Such a monster
Kudos to Novak, his game is so destructive here, he is competing so well, he had his chances in both the sets, I think he wasn't mentally strong back then. I think his 2011 version is the evolved version of this level. Nowadays he doesn't play even close to this level and relies on other player's mistakes, not a bad strategy but less entertaining lol. Anyways brilliant match.
Don't forget Murray also beat Federer in 2006, at Cincinnati.
*Djokovic is an aggressive baseline player.*
He likes to be in control and dictate play. Novak rely on the strength of his groundstrokes to move opponents around the court and aggressively goes for winners from the back of the court. He attacks short balls in the court, and takes the chance at making a few unforced errors in order to hit
That's how he won 20GS, 354 weeks as #1, 35 masters1000 and 7 ending season as #1. 🎾🥇🏆

The way Federer played here was quite different than the past few years. The court or the ball were playing faster it seemed. While Djokovic was already showing some glimpses of his powerful returns.

I also can't believe how much Djokovic choked in this match. He could have won this. He was up 6-5, 40-0 on his serve in the first set, choked, got broken, and lost in the tiebreak. Djokovic: 11
Federer: 12
Djokovic prime 2011 to 2020. Djokovic was practically a teen when he lost to fed.
Djokovic prime 2011-2016
