    The Prax/Amos dynamic is one of the best parts of the whole series.

    • @3Kings_Industries
      @3Kings_Industries 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      What is really sad, in the books, there was a whole campaign smear on Prax, where they basically accused him of r*p!no his own daughter. And that emotional seesaw he went through. And how Amos, w/ his traumatic youth, bonded w/ him, basically reminding him that Prax wasn't that kind of person. It really solidified their bond.

    "It always ends with me being 'What the fuck just happened?'"

    That scar on Dawes' neck is from their old spacesuits, which had seals that would scar them sometimes. The neck tattoos that a lot of the younger belters have mimic those scars that the "OG" belters have.

    Sadly, one of my favorite sentences from the books didn't make it onto the show. No Spoilers, just a great moment. A melancholy celebration of Epstein.

    Anderson Dawes(Jared Harris) explained the scar on his neck is from contact burns the belters would get from the old suits. I think that's why a lot of them have those neck tats. Gotta love Drummer.. she's up there with Miller and Amos for best characters. Avasarala is also the bomb.

  • @zachgaskins3731
    @zachgaskins3731 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    Your struggle with the Belter culture is a very real one - they all have different ideas of how to move forward, and you have many individuals thinking they have the ability to lead. And some feel working with Earth/Mars is the best way and others will never trust them not to put their own planets first. Some feel Earth/Mars must be brought low in order to understand and to be on an even playing field.

      @@AhegaoEinstein On a macro level, it is more a practical explanation than being pessimistic. Vast distance amplifies difficulty in communication, further exacerbate cultural value difference. However, there should be some exception in the micro level. Species that live closer together would have a much higher odds of having enough interaction that might promote enough positive interaction for some kind of working together, assuming there is not any initial species ending conflict.
      The alternate explanation is the great filter similar to what Colonel Janus said. And in certain light, might be more pessimistic about life itself.

    Holden has a longer meta-arc as his character starts to devolve from the classical hero tropes and begins to take on negative character traits from both Miller and Amos. Keep an eye on that. It's not a "downfall-redemption" cliché, but close and subtle.

    "Step One: Find God." This isn't that she doesn't believe in aliens, it's that she knows a far more advanced alien species would do to us what colonizers do to the indigenous peoples. Even if they're nice, they'll wipe out everything that makes us what we are.

    • @bthsr7113

      Not necessarily what would happen. Hypothetically, benevolent aliens could uplift us while respecting what makes us human, and letting us make choices. Of course, if they aren't that very best case, then we get no say in what ultimately happens. We can go kicking and screaming, but not win.

    The thing about this series is once a faster reaction drive is invented every nation on Earth will be sending miners to the belt where rare Earths are both abundant and not mixed with minerals. At the same time plans are already on paper for lunar and Martian bases and colonies. So what we see in this series (aside from Proto-molecule) are quite possibly in humanities future.

    The Expanse series made me want to find the books.

    • @scope40k
      @scope40k 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I finished 5 seasons then switched to audiobooks. They're quite good actually, though a lot of changes were made in TV show.
      I'd split them into four groups:
      - Changes that were made to fix plots that were self controversial or not too realistic.
      - Changes that were made to lower the budget.
      - Additional stories based on the events that were just mentioned in the books but not shown.
      - Additional stories added to extend some of the characters arcs, to make them more empathising.
      So in my opinion some plots are better shown in the series, and some in the books, and I cannot specifically choose one above the other. They're both good in some way.
      Most serious changes were made in 2nd and 3rd seasons and on with seasons 4 and 5 it starts to be really close to the original script.

    One thing that was conveyed in the books, that was Not portrayed in the series, during Gunny's trip to Earth, she believed that if Earth and Mars did go to war, even considering her Martian pride and fervor in support of the perceived Martian tactical and technical advantage, she had Zero doubt that Earth would win the war.
    She came to her conclusion based on numbers, weapons of mass destruction, governmental stability, and man power available. Oh, and that 'training' in 1-G is no where near the same as 'actual' Gravity.

    And That is how The Martian Congressional Republic was Formed.

    One thing always bothered me about the account of what happened on Ganymede… zero evidence from the UN. Their troops were the first to encounter the beast, and I can’t imagine that troopers in the future wouldn’t be recording their actions. Soldiers today carry body cameras after all.
    The UN had to have had at least something to go off of. The bodies of their troops, and damage sustained by the beast. Comms logs, aerial over watch from their ships. Something. The UN troops also engaged the monster before the signals were jammed. But there is zero mention of anything in the show.
    Maybe the book covers it? 🤷‍♂️

    Mary, I HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend you read "The Churn" sometime during your viewing of season 4. There are neat callbacks to that short novella in particular in season 5. It is pretty short, and should not take you too much time to read, but watching season 5 is really fun to watch if you had read that. Some may say it spoils the show, but honestly, the show spoils the book WAY more than the book spoils the show, and it is much more worthwhile to read it first IMHO.

    people like dawes must have a real hard time NOT manipulating people to their benefit. I mean, they'd find doing so so very easy. Anyone they meet more than likely leaving the room an ally. Stands to reason, I guess; if you got the gift of gab, only one way to really make use of it. Only question is what you do with the power you gain.

    40:50 Don't worry. If Space X's Starship project is successful, then I have no doubt that you can experience true sensation of being in space within your lifetime.

    The *Drake Equation* is a calculation of how likely it is that alien life will (a) exist and (b) exist within realistic contact distance of us. It's a theoretical, as several of the variables in the equation are entirely subjective and unprovable, eg what are the odds of life arising on another planet, which we can't possibly calculate as we have a sample size of exactly one, ie Earth, and still don't know how it arose here.
    An optimist will come up with a high value, a pessimist will get a low value. Myself I figure a very low value. That's not to say other life doesn't exist, it's just to say that it's highly unlikely to exist near enough to us for us to discover it.
    It's really a thought experiment rather than a truly scientific equation. Still worth checking out as something to ponder.
    And the *Fermi Paradox* is basically "if the universe is 14 billion years old why haven't we encountered alien life yet? Where are they all?"
    This one I personally find a lot less credible. We've only been broadcasting signals into space for a little over a century, and on a relative galactic scale (let alone a universal scale) that sphere of 100 light years from Earth is infinitesimally small.
    For other life to find us, it would have to be either existing or travelling within that tiny 100 light year sphere of space, and just also happen to be at a technological level where they _could_ detect us - something we're barely capable of attempting ourselves.
    There's plenty of other sources out there discussing these ideas, definitely don't just accept my own interpretation. It's a fascinating concept to think about and I'm sure you'll reach your own conclusions. Just thought I'd share mine.

    Lowda comes from Germanic roots "leute". So inyalowda = inner folk, beltalowda = belter folk and so on. "Milowda na anyimal" = my people aren't animals.

    Watching you reminds me of how many strong independent women are in The Expanse: Chrisjen, Naomi, Julie, Drummer and Bobbie to start with. This is a diverse and amazing cast. Drummer is played by Cara Gee who is Ojibwa (A First Nation tribe in Canada). Not a single "white blond" main cast member so far. Its awesome, and about time.

    A year late so basically pointless but 14:45 is exactly why I think reacting to movies/shows while reading chat is just dumb. Dude just spoiled something that was JUST about to happen before it happens and ruined it.
    Your reactions are amazing and one my favourites out there but reading episode descriptions before watching the episode and reading spoilers in chat is a little frustrating, especially since this show is so good to be spoiled
