Unmaking Harumi is probably the best piece of music the show has ever made and it plays during the best scene the show has ever made, the music itself being a huge part of what makes the scene so good. When this music plays, it's feels like a tragedy is unfolding at the opera! You the viewer can scarily believe the horror you are witnessing as you the grating truth is reveled. You don't want that truth to be true but dread it, run from it, destiny still arrives. You are faced with the horrifying reality just as the main character (Lloyd) is in that moment not you both have to grapple with the betrayal. This themes is just so incredible because it captures all the pain, betrayal, horror, and hatred that defines Harumi. And this same theme was played so many times earlier, but now it's twisted into something that sounds evil. The music, we realized, has betrayed us just as Harumi did. It's just too good, I can think for few other shows that have the soundtrack double-cross you to accompany the villain!
You are right as always, Obi Wan, the anagnorisis scene is spectacular, I'll always be fascinated by how the Hageman brothers wrote the Oni Trilogy. I already knew about Harumi being an antagonist before watching SOG (basically because I watched the season in early 2021 and not 2018) but, nevertheless I was surprised by the scene as if I knew nothing before, one can easily empathize with Lloyd in there, I use the word anagnorisis in here for a reason, the scene is as powerful as a greek tragedy writen by sophocles, you discover the dark truth but you deny it and don't want to believe it, you know that you have helped the enemy do exactly what you didn't want to happen but you've done it and Harumi can easily take the mask from your hands.
Unmasking Harumi is very relevant and means a lot to me as someone who loves to analize music scores from movies and television conststantly, as this theme and the soundtrack from Ninjago got me into that. When I was about 14 years old in early 2021 I decided to rewatch Ninjago as I had watched until Hands of Time when I was a kid and I remembered that the show was good. When rewatching, something came to my attention that the little 10 year old me never noticed, the soundtrack was very well crafted with leitmotifs for almost every character and when I looked for the music I was surprised with the fact that the fandom had docummented more than 80 leitmotifs, it was incredible! Then on my rewatch I watched season 8: Sons of Garmadon for the first time and I noticed how Harumi (a character that started as an ally and was then revealed to be a villainous psychopath) had a theme that started nicely at the first episodes and as the story evolved her leimotif became a tragic theme. The theme that you are listening to now, "Unmasking Harumi" where Lloyd, the protagonist who fell in love with Harumi realizes who she actually is and that she wanted Lloyd dead all along is the culmination of her leitmotif where all her sadness and rage are revealed. Harumi is a character that witnessed the loss of her parents when a building collapsed because of Lloyd's irresponsibility and became fixated on that moment, believing that Lloyd and his friends were not the right people to protect Ninjago, she befriended them so that she could go with them on a journey to find a relic with the power to revive people, just to stab them in the back and steal the artifact from them, reviving the evil Lord Garmadon (Lloyd's dad) so that he would become a dictator and keep Ninjago in order under his rule. After becoming Lord Garmadon's second in command in their new empire, Harumi was in a persecution with Lloyd, who had created a resistance against her and Garmadon, when a stone giant controlled by Lord Garmadon fell onto a building where she was in, causing her death, Harumi had become drunk on power and forgot the reason why she did all of this, leading to her having the same death that her parents experienced all those years back. Of course, her theme and character are way deeper than what I said right now, but then this comment would be an essay with several pages, hopefully you got what I said. In the end, Harumi's character was one of the first characters I did a deep analysis of and her theme also was one of the first to be anaylised by me, if it wasn't because of the musical brilliance of Jay Vincent and Michael Kramer I wouldn't have discovered how far musical storytelling could go. Thank you SMB for this one, it means a lot if you couldn't tell by now.
@@NoNameTbh4, I would absolutely love to! My YT channel is mostly stop motion films and animation experiments, but I've thought for quite a while now on making a youtube channel with video essays and discussions on television and music scores.
Holy essay, dude. I didn't realize how much this theme meant to you. I'm addicted to leitmotifs and finding them in media - and I had no idea this was a more tragic version of that motif. What a beautiful piece. Congratulations!
I became a recent Ninjago fan after binging until season 7 (I still have yet to watch Sons Of Garmaddon I just need a little break hehe) I honestly wish I was a Ninjago fan when J was young because back in the day being a Ninjago fan was awesome. I'm just super happy I kind of came in during the sudden rise of the franchise
@@chillbizz74 Oh yeah it was amazing! I was a fan since the original pilots, so I kinda grew up with it, and honestly when I learned who was the Green Ninja, I was shocked lmao. Sons of Garmadon and the rest of the Oni trilogy (so Sons of Garmadon, Hunted and March of the Oni) is honestly peak Ninjago, so you're in for a treat!
"And now it's your turn to feel that grief... You can let it overwhelm and destroy you, or, you can let it harden, and strengthen you, as it did me." I'm late to this but holy shit, 10/10 cover guys. An amazing cover for of one of the best soundtracks for _the best_ character from an absolutely phenomenal show. I can't believe you guys covered this, I feel like I'm dreaming. Edit: I didn't realize before that the Synthesia-style visualized notes are red and yellow to match Harumi's face paint, you guys are great.

Congrats, Opallyon! This is a very nice piece of music - and it does capture tragic feelings in it. Beautiful arpeggios, and well-crafted melodies.. I think this is very well made. Ninjago was my whole childhood, but I only watched 'til season 5 - never got to hear or see this part/musics. I won't request anything since this is a sacred request fulfillment
Thank you, I highly encourage you to watch seasons 8,9 and 10 of the show if they interest you, they're the best that you'll see of the show and one of my favorite animated instalments. Also there's about 20 leitmotifs in constant motion to analyse in the trilogy.
One of my absolute favourite tracks! I’d spent ages piecing this thing together months ago, it’s great to get a tutorial for it! Ninjago’s soundtrack sadly doesn’t get much appreciation, so seeing big channels like you give it attention always makes me happy. This show’s soundtrack is what inspired me to get into music, and I want other people to hear just how great this stuff is.
this looks really fun to play, I wasnt aware that ninjago had such a fire ost, great work as always! (you guys should consider doing some pieces from Ultrakill, I think a piano version of Order, War, Death Of God's Will or Tenebre Rosso Sangue would be awesome!)

"I don't wanna believe it... you're the quiet one?" "How could you say that?" "It all makes sense now... the greatest villain is the one you never knew was there in the first place. YOU said that." "Oh yes, I'm the criminal mastermind! How could I have done this? Do you realize how silly you're sounding? I... I love you." "Stay. Back." "Lloyd..."
This is AMAZING!! ✨️✨️✨️ I actually really never noticed this song back when I first watched this season as a kid, and it's really cool that we got a cover of this song! I'd love to see you do the Sons of Garamdon opening song. I bet it would sound really epic on the piano!

That one scene in S15 where Nya contemplates her plans and ends up sacrificing her life to merge with the sea also has one of the best soundtracks imo

WOW this was so good! I just loved that character as such a tragic and broken villain. Really well done with the piano version!
One the most epic pieces for Ninjagos most polarizing antagonist, needless to say I love how this piano rendition sounds.
