Dr. Mike! Chest compressions saved my cat! 🥺
A few days ago, she suddenly collapsed, went stiff, and wasn't breathing. When I checked her pulse, she had a faint heartbeat and I immediately did chest compressions until she started moving and breathing again. We brought her to the vet and turns out she has pneumonia. Less than an hour into the examination, she could stand again. She's doing OK now, and I'm just so amazed by how chest compressions brought her back. Thanks, Dr. Mike!

      @graealex 2 ปีที่แล้ว +33

Part of the challenge is that they go without even basic clothing and shoes. That makes it like 10x harder. Even if you'd wear some jeans, a shirt and some worn-out shoes, you'd already be quite a lot better off.

@@hasoonnine Point is that it isn't about particular survival gear. Rather basic clothing that you'd wear in all circumstances.
Not wearing pants for example creates a big problem with UV and bug bites. Normale legs and torso would have basic protection.
The shortness of the challenge also means there is little point in trying to create any of these items. It really is just about the pain of plowing through not having these items.

@@4Curses If you ever watched the show, you'd realize that shoes made from these materials last about as long as they take to make.
Some contestants tried that. Realized it's not worth the effort. Sometimes they prepared one or more pairs of shoes for the final leg of the challenge, and otherwise avoided walking where it is too painful, for example at noon in full sunshine.
The only ones that had longer-term success with shoes were those that had either duct tape or animal skin/hide available. Which only very few contestants had. But shoes made from grass or leaves are just garbage, and will barely last a whole day, let alone most of the challenge.

I feel like mushrooms are very much a no-go in a survival situation. Even if it's literally the only food you can find for some weird reason, unless you're like, two+ weeks into it without having eaten anything I very much doubt they're worth the risk considering how freaking dangerous and difficult to accurately identify they are. I get that the concept of naked and afraid is that they have almost nothing including clothes, but are they not allowed to fashion body coverings? That sunburn was ridiculous. The first thing I would do in a situation like that would be to cost my whole body in mud and leaves. No sunburn and it keeps most of the biting insects off.

I think there are some people who think they need to do this kind of thing in order to have some philosophical epiphany or spiritual awakening. However, I can have deep thoughts in the comfort of my own house, so I never understood going out to extremely wild places and risking your life just for some introspection. You can question the purpose of life in A/C as well as in the arctic circle. 🤷🏻‍♀
The physical and social isolation, and lack of distractions, can help, but again, you can do that stuff alone in a house or hotel room or wherever within driving distance of medical care. It's like when people go out west or to South America to "find themselves". You don't find yourself in the desert or rainforest; you find yourself within. The setting hardly matters. Nature is beautiful but there isn't really a need to risk losing a whole arm to a simple cut. Even cavemen knew better than to try to survive alone. Humans have always needed a tribe/community/society to survive long-term. Also, constantly focusing on how you will get food is not really conducive to deep thought, imo.

As a person who lives 29 years in Baltic sea area, in cottage between river and forest, i literally have so mutch fun watch people going nuts when i show them how to pick berries, mushrooms, go fishing, farming, 🤭 Pick herbs for medicine, and when i was little, catching wild duck or rabbit wasn't illigal, so, dinner ready 😀 i woul survive in europe forests pretty well, cuz i lived there for most of my life.😀 So sooo mutch fun give someone from city that wildlife/cottage expirience.

Honestly, sometimes it's good to watch shows like these so that we learn to appreciate how amazing modern society and modern medicine are. It also especially highlights the idiocy of the "Oh, but it's NaTuRaL" folks, whether it be people who insist tap water is "dead" and they need "alive" water (AKA unsterilised) or those who think you can replace those nasty chemicals and vaccines with oils and prayer.

Wait, leishmaniasis isn't that serious? I remember some (possibly grossly exaggerated) story about someone getting an infection on their feet then having their face eaten off a decade later when the larvae hatch in their soft tissue. I'd love for you to do an episode on tropical infections- including Dengue, Malaria, TB (as they're especially ignored in the first world).

I love Dr Mike videos, but I have to say it annoys me when he sort of criticises people for asking "are you alright?" when something's clearly wrong. It's the first thing you're taught to do when handling a first aid - even if you can see that they're definitely not alright, you have to ask because a) you can assess how bad it is based on their response, b) it makes sure they're conscious, responsive and mentally engaging with you for follow-up questions and c) it's the decent human thing to do.

Although it has gotten more media attention in recent months, I still feel the average person does not understand how devastating this condition is for so many. 8:22 it depends if it’s a swarm of if it’s a few bites. The sensation feels like pinching it’s different then a radiating pain. And when the itching begins the constant irritation to the surface causes them to feel pulse like but not deep. It’s really not an issue unless you get really bit up by a swarm. Then the sensation is overwhelming due to surface area. It’s not like a bee sting more like a bunch of fly bites from tiny horse-fly wannabes.
I think she was more having a anxiety attack with dehydration and pain. Her throat might not have been closing up but I’m sure she was feeling her pulse and monitoring the pain a lot for possibly multiple hours. And with every step on sand you notice those little bites pretty quickly. Between her toes is kinda rough it’s a good call not to walk around and create more blisters on your feet.
Lemongrass/mint/catmint produce oils with natural chemical insecticide causing insects that crawl on it to feel itchy/irritated as it coats their hairs/body/breathing openings. It can be mixed with alcohol so that it’s more mist like/vapor like and affects bugs differently and coats you evenly. (These grasses/mints are also what many animals rub against as natural insect repellent keeping away flies, ticks, fleas, and lice. Hence why one of them is cat-mint.)
Funny enough the itchy-insecticide for bugs coincides with a skunk/musky scent usually in multiple plant species meaning it’s an adaptation against pests by plants. Neat.
Also in Florida it’s why a lot of things like lotions will randomly smell like lemongrass as it keeps away some bugs as you wear it through the day. Some brands capitalize on that.

That first video is actually super interesting- there is some evidence suggesting that ants produce a natural disinfectant in their saliva. As far as an on the fly treatment goes, this one may be pretty damn smart. I’m going to now search for the outcome of that episode and possibly a way to watch this show lol(I’ve never seen this incredibly entertaining series before)!
