Thank you for showing this and sacrificing a brand new filter so we could see that as well. About to do a service on my buddy's 2017 Honda Odyssey we are planning to change out his inline filter with a Magnefine. Very similar filter but also has a powerful magnet inside. I know the Honda drain plugs are magnetic but can't hurt to have an extra magnet also has the pressure relief valve so that if the media did clog fluid would still flow.

    • @MikeTrullAmsoildealer

Factory filter also has a relief valve built in. It was very impressive to see that filter with that many miles really did not have a lot in it.

@@MikeTrullAmsoildealer ...Yeah it looked the same as other filters I've seen cut apart, I can't help but wonder if the bypass valve was open on his 575Kmi filter if so it wouldn't be filtering at all to bad he didn't cut the element out to inspect the bypass. I also wonder about the specs (how many microns it filters down to.)

About a year and a half ago I watched this video, along with some others, while learning about why my transmission filter had never been replaced and decided I really should give it a shot, looked fairly straightforward to do. Bought a transmission filter back then just waiting for the right time.
Pain in the butt, well more the lower back, but today I finally got around to replacing it. (About 290K now.) Didn't look inside though. ;)
Tomorrow probably will replace the fuel pump strainer (whose existence I just recently found out about)... At least I won't have to do much digging around in the engine compartment for it....

I agree this in-line transmission filter should be changed every 100k mi. I changed my filter at about 95k. Right now my 05 TSX has 131k mi

  • @hatsunemikufan4

The filter was placed on to trap break-in debris. If the filter were to get clogged to the point where is hinders the flow of fluid the transmission is well on its way out. I would however replace the fluid (drain and fill at 60,000 mile intervals even a vehicle has lifetime fluid.

Actually, Honda says no need to replace them except you have got a transmission issue. It's supposed to be a lifetime thing.
But I guess it's better off having a new one. (must be OEM though).
Also, I believe any vehicle above 300,000 miles is well beyond its expected lifetime.

Interesting to see that the old filter at least didn't appear clogged with debris. How much fluid actually came out when you actually got the hoses to let go? 1 paper towel, or the whole roll? Also, keep an eye on the couplings with the hoses and new filter for a week or so. If they aren't under much pressure, it's probably a non-issue, but I've had to go back and replace a small hose or two where I've re-used it, but it was just too crusty to seal to the new part (usually way worse with coolant hoses).

Interesting topic and thats amazing it lasted that long with the original filter with no failure. But yes the filter is dirty but what does it look like at 100k miles? I have seen filters look like that at 60K miles but its the contents( metal, debri, clutch pack material etc...) that the filter is capturing is what i would have like to have seen. My suggestion is 30K- 60K miles would be just fine in changing the filter and at 100k change the oil. Great video.
