Ironically, the Golden Age of Star Wars was the prequel era. It wasn't just three movies, but the expansion of merchandising via video games and spin-off television shows. Plinkett is pretty harsh on how they tried to pander to everyone, but it did work. Toys for kids, PS2 and Xbox games for teenager boys, elaborate costumes for girls, and fan service for adult fans of the OT. The sequel trilogy, in theory, is only really aimed at fans of the OT. EA Battlefront shat the bed in the teenage and adult markets. The toys are overpriced, which WCB covered extensively. Only Lego Star Wars is performing as it should, but it's even more of a homage than the movies. TFA actually had the perfect tool to explain why there was a powerful First Order and the Resistance. It's the opening crawl. It's designed to deliver exposition quickly and efficiently. Why Abrams used his opening crawl to go on and on about how Luke has vanished is beyond me and is part of the reason why TFA feels like such a disposable movie. TLJ shat the bed harder than EA, which is no mean feat of incompetence. Now the state of the Star Wars brand rests on Abrams writing a good third act.
Agree, they should have quickly explained the First Order's rise to power in the opening crawl, that would actually make use of the opening crawl. Could have had Thrawn involved in the New Republic fall in opening crawl. And could have had flashbacks to this in the movies. And would be cool to have a spin-off trilogy later explaining how First Order rised between episode 6 and 7, perhaps loosely based on Thrawn trilogy. Way better than a stupid Han Solo origin story, SMH! The opening crawls are espcially pointless in the sequel trilogy. Even Last Jedi takes place immediately after Force Awakens, so there's not really anything relevant to say in the opening crawl, and they don't.
Not saying that objectively the originals aren't better films because they are, but the prequel era is when I became a super fan of star wars. The world building through movies shows and games got me hooked in that time period. The sequels don't count in my Canon but the prequels will forever have my heart for the aforementioned.
So the trick to enjoying this movie is getting a group of friends together who hate it as much as you do, and bring alcohol. Because listening to this was 100x better than watching the damn movie!

Honestly, it seems that DIsney and Kathleen Kennedy had no understanding, nor did they care to understand, what they had on their hands. Jar Jar Abrams, and especially Ruin Johnson, went out of their way to insult the very fans whose passion for those original films made it possible for the new movies to be made in the first place. But today's big-wigs are nothing if not totally disconnected from reality, and to rationalize their hubris, lash out attacking fans as losers, sexists (this after having created female concepts that are shallow, incompetent, reckless, often cowardly, arrogant, and stupid), racists (after depicting the Black guy as a janitor and a coward), stupid, etc. This is all to try and worm their way out of trouble for having taken a no-brainer project and run it through the assembly-line to try and wring as much water out of the proverbial sponge as possible. TBF Poe did nothing wrong in this movie. Everything he did he was in the right. Without the Drednot being destroyed the rebels would have to deal with it during the chance. He gave Finn and Rose a plan when for all he knew there was no plan. His mutiny was justified because for all he knew the rebels were just going to die.

I had to turn in early and had to be up early, and I was thrilled to find this when I woke up. I had coffee and breakfast while listening and managed to keep it all down. The film is beyond stupid - why would the rich gamblers on canto bight put up with a casino that rattles, and causes drinks to shake, whenever a horse race occurs. Would not all the horse race shaking affect dice rolls, etc. how many times at a race track have you experienced the building shake when the horse race starts.
The director was trying to add Twilight stuff to Star Wars - in twilight, Bella and Edward have long spiritual communications when they are physically separated. So, trying to add teenage girl stuff to the film, they tried to add twilight stuff.

ID4 was a dumb movie, but not a bad one. The plot made sense: Aliens come to Earth, fuck up everyone, humanity fights back and wins. It's a movie that understands what it is. The Last Jedi, on the other hand, doesn't know what it wants to be. Is it a homage? Is it a deconstruction? Is it a sequel to the last movie? It tries to be all of these things, but lacks total coherence. Write out the plot beats and see if it's as simple as ID4. I tried doing it and then gave up.

Luke was not a Gary sue. Luke got knocked out by sand people, he got shoved and dissed by a cantina spacer, he got knocked out by a snow creature, he tried to save his friends and failed, he got his arm cut off by Vader, he disappointed yoda several times. Thank you for touching on the visual problems with this smug, fart-sniffing movie. I thought this was an aesthetically *hideous* flick. One of the things I've always loved about Star Wars is how immersive the sense of scale is, and as "memeified" as the word has become, the world-building is/was absolutely gorgeous. Where is that sense of scale in the Sequel Trilogy? Where are the fucking aliens, where's the unique architecture, where are the mysterious monsters, and why the hell does every single location look like a bland variation of earth? I remember reading a quote from a lead production designer in the Art of The Force Awakens book that really rubbed me the wrong way. He said something to effect of "I designed the aliens and background characters in such a way as not to be too distinct because I didn't want the audience to become distracted from the action of the main characters." That is so anti-ethical to what Star Wars is about and it breaks my heart that they have *exactly* the wrong people working on these movies. Did you notice how the visual design was much stronger and more immersive in Rogue One?

The whole X-wing in the water was lame. Where was R2? Oh, that's right, he was in hibernation. But, wait! R2 was with Luke at the Jedi training camp. So, he was with Luke just before going into exile. And that leads to the big question... How did Luke fly it without R2 and how did R2 end back up with the reb....I mean resistance?
Around 1:16:00 I was actually a little drunk during my first viewing of The Last Jedi & I was still very confused & conflicted. Same feelings occur when I was sober the second time.
Remember the beginning of empire strikes back - we see the empire sending hundreds of probe robots across the galaxy, looking for the rebels. We see one of the probes land on Hoth, where it sees the rebel buildings and reports it back to the empire. We see Vader discussing the probe reports with his admirals, and then the imperial starfleet sets course to Hoth. Compare that storytelling set up with this crap - where the first order shows up at the resistance planet minutes after starkiller base is destroyed.
Laziest writing of all time. I feel bad for the cast and crew that were hired by Disney besides these terrible writers, directors and producers whom did the worst job possible with the franchise.
As far as droid pilots, we know that droids can pilot ships because, in Empire strikes back, after Luke leaves Hoth, r2 offers to fly the x wing but Luke says he wants to leave it on manual for a while. Thus, there is no reason for admiral gender studies to have to suicide pilot the ship. Daisy Ridley was a model before she went into acting, and while models are beautiful, they are trained in striking a pose and maintaining one expression, models usually make for very stiff and very limited actressses.
Watched this twice already...the commentary that is. My favorite line is when Deon says, “cause plot.” That really does sum up the movie. Whenever someone asks why did Rey...because plot...why don’t Finn and Rose...because plot. Poe and Holdo should just...because plot.
KK is like the Palpatine of Disney Star Wars. Only way less interesting a character. If you put the characters of KK and Palpatine side by side, I would actually hate KK more than Palpatine.
So far, Rey has saved and delivered BB-8, outflew some TIEs in an atmosphere, saved Finn, fought a winning battle against Ben Solo that ended in stalemate, then survived a battle against a group of Praetorian Guards with Ben as her ally, then saved the survivors of the Resistance. She hasn't won a single battle outright or helped destroy anything First Order related. All she's done is save some droids and meatbags.
They made Luke’s projection have a blue lightsaber and have him appear younger so that the audience could feel SMART about figuring it out before the reveal. This way the audience could have its feel smart moment.
In defense of Maz Orangey thing saying "that is a story for a other day," The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi both happen on the same day, so the time hasn't come yet.
If I was going to re-write this movie the first thing I would do is have a time skip. Star Wars to me has always felt like you were just watching the best episodes of a TV series and skipping the filler crap. By removing the time skip they have destroyed that feeling. Watching The Last Jedi is like watching 2 Girls 1 Cup, except it's 2 and a half hours long and has worse character development.
I felt more of a connection to those 2 girls than any of the characters in the new trilogy

TBF Poe did nothing wrong in this movie. Everything he did he was in the right. Without the Drednot being destroyed the rebels would have to deal with it during the chance. He gave Finn and Rose a plan when for all he knew there was no plan. His mutiny was justified because for all he knew the rebels were just going to die.

The film is beyond stupid - why would the rich gamblers on canto bight put up with a casino that rattles, and causes drinks to shake, whenever a horse race occurs. Would not all the horse race shaking affect dice rolls, etc. how many times at a race track have you experienced the building shake when the horse race starts.

ID4 was a dumb movie, but not a bad one. The plot made sense: Aliens come to Earth, fuck up everyone, humanity fights back and wins. It's a movie that understands what it is.
The Last Jedi, on the other hand, doesn't know what it wants to be. Is it a homage? Is it a deconstruction? Is it a sequel to the last movie? It tries to be all of these things, but lacks total coherence. Write out the plot beats and see if it's as simple as ID4. I tried doing it and then gave up.

Luke got knocked out by sand people, he got shoved and dissed by a cantina spacer, he got knocked out by a snow creature, he tried to save his friends and failed, he got his arm cut off by Vader, he disappointed yoda several times. In Empire, he apparently lost Leia to Han. Because of these defeats, when he won a victory we cheered for him. Rey just wins at everything.

Thank you for touching on the visual problems with this smug, fart-sniffing movie. I thought this was an aesthetically *hideous* flick. One of the things I've always loved about Star Wars is how immersive the sense of scale is, and as "memeified" as the word has become, the world-building is/was absolutely gorgeous.
Where is that sense of scale in the Sequel Trilogy? Where are the fucking aliens, where's the unique architecture, where are the mysterious monsters, and why the hell does every single location look like a bland variation of earth? I remember reading a quote from a lead production designer in the Art of The Force Awakens book that really rubbed me the wrong way. He said something to effect of "I designed the aliens and background characters in such a way as not to be too distinct because I didn't want the audience to become distracted from the action of the main characters."
That is so anti-ethical to what Star Wars is about and it breaks my heart that they have *exactly* the wrong people working on these movies.
Did you notice how the visual design was much stronger and more immersive in Rogue One?

The TLJ leaves me with bland indifference, I can't bring myself to hate it because it is so uninspired on every level. Which is incredibly frustrating I am left with nothing like when you devour a candy bar, then look down at the wrapper and have no sensation of having eaten it.

The whole X-wing in the water was lame. Where was R2? Oh, that's right, he was in hibernation. But, wait! R2 was with Luke at the Jedi training camp. So, he was with Luke just before going into exile. And that leads to the big question... How did Luke fly it without R2 and how did R2 end back up with the reb....I mean resistance?
Around 1:16:00 I was actually a little drunk during my first viewing of The Last Jedi & I was still very confused & conflicted. Same feelings occur when I was sober the second time.
Remember the beginning of empire strikes back - we see the empire sending hundreds of probe robots across the galaxy, looking for the rebels. We see one of the probes land on Hoth, where it sees the rebel buildings and reports it back to the empire. We see Vader discussing the probe reports with his admirals, and then the imperial starfleet sets course to Hoth. Compare that storytelling set up with this crap - where the first order shows up at the resistance planet minutes after starkiller base is destroyed.
Laziest writing of all time. I feel bad for the cast and crew that were hired by Disney besides these terrible writers, directors and producers whom did the worst job possible with the franchise.
As far as droid pilots, we know that droids can pilot ships because, in Empire strikes back, after Luke leaves Hoth, r2 offers to fly the x wing but Luke says he wants to leave it on manual for a while. Thus, there is no reason for admiral gender studies to have to suicide pilot the ship. Daisy Ridley was a model before she went into acting, and while models are beautiful, they are trained in striking a pose and maintaining one expression, models usually make for very stiff and very limited actressses.
Watched this twice already...the commentary that is.
My favorite line is when Deon says, “cause plot.”
That really does sum up the movie.

So far, Rey has saved and delivered BB-8, outflew some TIEs in an atmosphere, saved Finn, fought a winning battle against Ben Solo that ended in stalemate, then survived a battle against a group of Praetorian Guards with Ben as her ally, then saved the survivors of the Resistance.
She hasn't won a single battle outright or helped destroy anything First Order related. All she's done is save some droids and meatbags.

They made Luke’s projection have a blue lightsaber and have him appear younger so that the audience could feel SMART about figuring it out before the reveal. This way the audience could have its feel smart moment.

If I was going to re-write this movie the first thing I would do is have a time skip. Star Wars to me has always felt like you were just watching the best episodes of a TV series and skipping the filler crap. By removing the time skip they have destroyed that feeling.
