Have you ever heard of the United Nations peacekeeping missions, the Blue Helmets, do you know exactly what they do, what they are used for, who makes up these international forces, how they work? Well, in this video we answer all these questions.
And take note, because on 7 and 8 December 2021, the 2021 Seoul United Nations Peacekeeping Ministerial will be hosted by South Korea, an important meeting for the future of this institution.

Fun fact the budget of all UN peace operations is around 7 Billion, which is only 1 Billion more than the budget of the New York Police Department or around 1% of US military spending.

There isn't one way of doing peacekeeping. The first generation missions, mainly in the middle east, were dealing with well disciplined armies that answered to their respective governments. In this role the peacekeepers acted a bit like referees. An impartial third party that made sure everyone played by the rules of peace treaties that had been agreed to by their governments.
The second generation of peacekeeping came in Rwanda and and the Former Yugoslavia. In this case governments were using political militias that they encouraged and protected but couldn't really control. The referee model just didn't work in that situation as there were no treaties and there were no well disciplined armies, just roving bands of thugs that had to be dealt with in the manner of riot control and counter insurgency. It was a major shift in the mind set and a lot of senior diplomats and officers didn't make the shift fast enough. A lot of soldiers and the people they were trying to protect died before the rules of engagement were upgraded.
It's always important to understand what you're sending peacekeeper into deal with and react to new situations quickly. You can't insist peacekeepers have to follow the classic model.

The success of the UN peacekeeper forces is widely exaggerated. They barely even stop drag traffics, yet alone terror and other hostile militant forces in Lebanon, Syria, Congo and many other places. And yes it is part of their duty. In fact, they don't even try because non of the soldiers or their operative countries wants to put them at risk and high involvement with the crisis.

The expectations people have for the UN are exaggerated. How can 190+ countries come to a common agreement considering the amount of geopolitical interests and historic divides playing out in some Conflicts. The UN should be seen as only one of many factors contributing to Peace. Not the main one.

Thanks. Great to see the UN getting coverage like this. But I think it might have been good to emphasise the different generations of peacekeeping. Originally it was designed to keep the peace in conflicts that the superpowers wanted to keep out of the grasp of the other. It was essentially designed to cordon them off from the Cold War. These were usually military oriented. But after the end of the Cold War the aims became more ambitious, including state building. The missions became vastly more complex, including administration, electoral observance, etc.

Main issue is that peace keepers are actually war fighters, just want to say that an effective military is made of of people who’s job is to destroy enemy combatants. If the world wants peace keepers higher and train peacekeepers but what I have seen as an American is solders being used as a multitool with no clear objectives and with there hands tied by politicians. All I wanted to say was let out solders be solders and let’s find train people as peacekeepers if needed you can’t have one person be both and not expect issues.

As for how effective they are when it comes to the bigger countries I still think they have no power when it comes to stopping conflict or making sure power is equally shared.

    Say it with me: Pffhhhhhaaaaaahahahahaha
Is this serious? Who wrote the script? The ineptitude of this very peace-keeping force led directly to the Six-Day War, because the moment Nasser told them to get out, they just packed up and left. It was a shameful failure, and one that set the state for almost every other UN intervention that ended in failure. For example, doing nothing during the Rwandan genocide, participating in atrocities in South Sudan (allegedly), or transmitting cholera in the aftermath of the earthquake in Haiti. In many cases, the UN peacekeepers are not merely useless, they are harmful.

Would much prefer the locals be the ones helping sort things out since they are more likely to have a better idea of the culture and needs of the people then someone that has been parachuted in. Which is currently one of the massive issues my country is having with vaccine rollouts particularly when it comes to those of different race with bad history with the government, the local medical staff are calling out for funding and support to hire more of their own people so they have more personal who can go door to door and sit down and talk people through their concerns and fears about the vaccine, which they’ve found a really good way to encourage people or even entire families to get jabbed, but instead they get sent fast response teams who think they can just set up a tent and do a mass vaccination. Teams that the local people do not know or trust and just do not want to engage with.
I’d assume the UN would have to think about such things when it comes to personal hence why they have the methods they do.

First of all, it is not an army. They are troops that remain part of their national armies and is only borrowed to the UN mission for a limited time. Second of all UN peace operations are normally deployed with the consent of their host state, if the host state withdraws consent, they leave. UN forces can provide a buffer, they can reduce tensions and mediate disputes but if two countries really want to start a war, the blue helmets are not going to fight them. Because what would the purpose of that be? instead of two countries fighting each other you would have two countries fighting blue helmets, which is not more peaceful.

good, but what if the blue helmets are facing tier one big armies? hypothetically say, if there is a un resolutions to put the blue helmets in ukraine, don't you think it will still work? very unlikely. and it had happened before, un soldiers station in east europe had face critics to let genocide happened in front of them. it is not a ultimate solution. they are borrowed soldiers, when shtf, not everyone will hold their stand. this method can only suppress low level conflicts while both side only have small arms. and don't forget there is a deadly weak point there, they are ordered not to fire or any aggressive movements, basically cannon fodders. it is not a news those convoys being attack and soldiers get killed. not because they can't fight, but un officials pull their legs. and the nature of these mission is policing, which, they are soldiers, not cops, they don't do crime investigation. most of them don't even speak the language they are ordered to station. you can expect low efficiency for sure. if you want the blue helmets to be efficient, there should be a branch of attachment in battalion size of cops to execute laws in international standard, not local standards. but that sounds impossible.

I'm really disappointed in objectivity of this movie... Only successful missions has been mention but not any that was a fiasco like in Yugoslavia

The UN may be almost useless in a pragmatic sense, but they represent something invaluable for humanity and for the values we hold dear as species.
