  • As writers, we all encounter moments when we don't feel inspired to create. We all deal with doubts and fears about our work. But I believe that the best way to rediscover inspiration when it seems to have abandoned us is to go back to the root of the source. To find the cause of burnout, writer's block, and lack of motivation. So if you are a writer, or a creator of ANY kind... I invite you to take a few deep breaths, get comfortable, and accompany me on a journey of self-discovery. Let's figure this out! Let's cultivate creativity from the ground up, and become the SOURCE of our own creative energy. Thank you for being here, my friend 🙏💗📖☮️

    🏄 A BIT ABOUT ME ☕️
I don't call myself an author because I don’t believe in labels.
I believe that story is art - that it's sacred, and that it is and has always been a force that changes and shapes our world. That's why I write, and that's why I create videos (even co-produced an environmental film). I consider the world my home, and enjoy submerging in unique cultures nearly as much as I love submerging in the ocean and riding the waves. I am the author of the young adult urban fantasy series The Blood Race, and am currently working on several new series's. Though I can be hard to find, I am easy to reach (and very fun to talk to) at: kate@kaemmons.com

I keep doing this, scrolling for entertainment instead of creating my stories. I found that going to bed early and listening to my book soundtrack while letting my mind wander is really good for finding inspiration. Then I write a bunch of prompts before going to sleep.
It’s weird, and definitely doesn’t work for everyone but you’re right we do spend too much time scrolling when being bored helps us be creative

I had just give up of a writing session and opened TH-cam when this video appeared. A very good coincidence, I watched it and watched again and annotated I think I absorbed a lot of things for good.
I'm already reflecting about what are my "weeds", but by now the video helped me to ratake my motivation for finishing this session. Thank you very much from Brazil

Thanks for this! When you said, “you’ve been given this by a divine source,” I got chills. That’s what I needed today. I am recovering from burnout, the medical kind that alters your brain. Finding glimmers of beauty and inspiration is always a gift. Blessings.

Thanks for coming here to read us seeing your videos and the feedback, I literally destroyed my creativity by being on social media, Im inspired by you to quit things, already quitted instagram and got zero notifications on my mobile except for calls, but youtube is a big thing I normalized to get info. Think Im hooked. Twitter I got it under control but not on youtube. So thanks for remind me of what I should do. By the way your energy it feels deeper, the way you communicate is stronger than in previous videos. 🙏 appreciate you for showing us the way 🙏 ✍ 💖 much love

Hello Kate! It's been a long time since I've commented, I've taken a long break from writing content. Saw the thumbnail and knew I had to watch thinking that I'd probably fully agree, and you nailed it :) I haven't worked out all my weeds yet, but I've been at it for a long while haha (aka years, but we all have our own pace) so this is a nice reminder for me.
One that I had for a long time that kept me demotivated was that I wasn't able to SEE my characters or world (in a more tangible or colorful way; I could only see them as thoughts in my head getting cluttered). So I sought to draw humans and even learn/make clay models (which I find easier, but far more expensive of an investment than drawing. Worth mentioning by the way that drawing can even just be stick figures if that's all it takes to get unstuck). For a while this really helped me keep up because finally I could see what I was envisioning (or trying to envision) and that gave some clarity in what to make those characters do or say next--and sometimes even helped to spot reasons why whatever I last wrote actually made no sense, and it would often turn out that that "made no sense" problem was why I got stuck continuing in the first place (and thus caused lack of motivation). Plus, it gave a nice break from the demotivated activity of writing while still being creative in a way that looped instantly back into writing, so that was a nice way to slow down for me.

yeah, you are right about social media, doing it too much does kill your creativity. i don't completely take social media out of my life because i still like to interact with my online friends and know what is going on in the world, but i certainty limit my time on there and be very selective what i choose to engage with so it doesn't overwhelm me.

Interesting topic, again, Kate. As a creator, it's important to continue with the ritual of creating. Consuming things can be a distraction, especially if you have creative work to do. Consuming things can also sometimes force your mind to think about things someone else has created, which can be entertaining, but can prevent a creator from doing their own thing.
You want to be in a state where you can create things from scratch, just like a professional drawing sketch artist can draw without having to use stencils. You want to build enough expertise as a creator, that you can conceptualize, create, and then deliver on making a quality product. That comes from doing it over and over and your mind will make it easier for you, the more you approach the topic.
Then, when you have expertise, you'll be able to play with the art and creations you make, and that's when you'll be crafting the masterpieces. Just like a famous athlete can play around once they know their way around their sport, so a creator can begin using their strong "creative muscles" in new and innovative ways, faster than most could do it. But to do that, you have to create. Don't just consume and assume that you will create, by consuming. Consuming is fun, but will not help with you creating. Whether it's writing, photography, videomaking, or whatever it is, practice doing your own creations and just do that. There's plenty of time to consume for fun, later on, but first, spend the weeks, months, and years that it will take, to become the creator you wish to be. ⭐️

I usually dont comment but thought putting it out there might help me release it. I dont see myself as a writer. Even though I have been journaling everyday for years and have tons of notebooks full of ideas and stories. It seems like other people become authors not me. Whew! 😮 Appreciate the timing of this video! Seems like I have a few distracts too. 😉

This was such an amazing video and just what I needed. My worst “weed” is prioritizing the activities that feel like they have a deadline, even when it’s not required. Writing for myself doesn’t have a deadline, so it’s easy to keep pushing it off and assume I’ll have time later. I think this is a sign that I need to find a writing coach or really reliable accountability partner. Have a wonderful day Kate! ❤❤

Haha, sorry. You were talking about identifying the distractions, and I thought about my husband and kids. Then you started talking about weeding the distractions out of your life, and I had to laugh.
They're a higher priority than my writing, and that's good.
I have been trying to cut out other unessessary things to allow more energy for my writing, though.

Hi Mrs. Kate, I just wanted to say thank you so much for all of your helpful videos they are truly inspiring and helped me so much. I hope you don’t mind but I have another question relating to this topic. If you are a chronic pain sufferer (chronic migraine) how can you not get discouraged for being a very slow writer when your physically hurting and can’t write?
