Dude how are you so good? You're like the Elliott Smith tutorial guru. Can I suggest that you play it all the way through once either at the beginning or the end of the video so we get an idea of what it'll sound like, thanks!
Sure thing! The reason I didn't do that in the video is cause I had only learned the song about 2 hours before I made the video so I kept messing it up haha. I'll just need to practice it a bit more because some of the transitions he does are a bit trick to do really smooth.
Not sure if I ever thanked you for making this video. This is one of his most beautiful progressions in my opinion. A very depressing break up song in my own experience lol. You’re the man hope you’re doing well
Well done, I sort of figured it out the same way, by ear and watching him play. But this is good conformation I was actually right. In his later years he played a simplified version, all the root notes were the same, but none of the more sophisticated voicings. Great video.
I'm definitely going to! I'm just not sure which songs to make them for since there are many good tutorials for ES songs on TH-cam. But I'm definitely going to. If you have any requests let me know!
@@alandavidlima Two that I could make cause I already know them are No Name #2 and Roman Candle. Both of those have tutorials but as far as his technique. I don't know if I know it, but you need to play like him to play Roman Candle. So if I make that tutorial I'll definitely spend time talking about that style of strumming. Also I've never learned Easy Way Out but I'll try and figure it out!
What a great song. I had a little trouble keeping up with it. Do you have these chords already written down somewhere that you can email to me? I'd love that
amazing tutorial, its one of my favorite's songs of his, one question, for the second chord, are you just hitting A,B,D,E? that part im a lil stump on lol
My method for learning Elliott Smith songs is usually trying to find a live recording of him playing it. If I can see his hands, I just break down the chords 1 by 1 until I have the whole song. If there's no video but the audio is good, I'll just spend a long time figuring out every not to every chord and trying to get them as close as possible. The right hand stuff always came to me pretty naturally though as I've been playing finger-style guitar my whole life. Thanks for listening!
This is maybe my favorite Elliott Smith song!?...well I don’t know if I could really ever pick one. Haha. Thanks for doing this and for your very nice comments at the end.
this is a great tutorial, am i just not understanding the way this is fingerpicked or are you alternating between travis picking and a combination of picking/strumming during the solo and parts of the chorus? if so how do you manage to do that? thanks
So the baseline picking structure is like Travis style picking where if you imagine the pattern as 1 3 2 4 (thumb > index > thumb > index). However in this song you pick a lot of notes at the same time. For a lot of the song on the 4 of the pattern, you are picking the B and E strings. And for parts where he is strumming (like near the end of the song) the pattern is more like this. Take a C chord and pluck it this way - A with your thumb > G and B with your index and middle finger > D with your thumb > B and E with your middle and ring finger. If you don't play with your ring finger at all that might be difficult just use index and middle for those too. Most of the song is played this way except for parts where you want to isolate individual notes like on the second chord in the song. I hope that helps!
You’re a LIFESAVER my friend I’ve been trying to learn this for weeks but I just couldn’t figure it out
I guess now you could say, "I Figured You Out" ;)

Hi, great tutorial but would you be able to tell me is the G sting played in this picking pattern, I can’t seem to make it out?
I play it like this the pattern is A Thumb > G Index > D Thumb > B + E Middle and Ring at the same time and then repeat.
omg your guitar sounds amazing! what model is it?
Yamaha FG-04 LTD. My first guitar I got about 21 years ago and still my favorite!
thank you so much!! i've always wanted to learn this song, just didn't even know where to start. how do you learn/teach yourself songs?

I agree and thanks! It's really so fun to play. If you have any requests for tutorials or covers, I'll see what I can do haha.
I would LOVE to see a tutorial for Elliott Smith’s Place Pigalle. Such a cool song.
