Philodendron Sodiroi Scandal

  • I bought a philodendron sodiroi one year ago and was excited to see it turning variegated. However leaf after leaf, the plant weakened until the new leaves will not unfurl anymore. I cut the top portion off hoping new branch below will be healthy, but the "variegation" returned. Upon doing some research, I found hundreds others facing the same problem. Judging from the fact that we are experiencing this at the same time and spread out all over the world, I am deducing that this is tissue culture gone wrong (But I may be wrong). In this video I call to arms awareness (and temporary boycott) of the philodendron sodiroi until suppliers and sellers can ensure healthy plants. Also I hope someone can produce a scientifically sound answer to whats going on so we can all learn from this.
    For more examples of problem sodirois, I have a story highlight dedicated to this issue on my instagram so you can have a look.

    Thanks for talking about this prob. 👍I have stopped buying many plants now due to the viral prob which I found some of my younger plants that I bought earlier this year exhibiting. It is nothing new but due to the demand now, the plant market has gone completely insane and people have started selling expensive plants that are just a thumbnail big over here in HK and is impossible to see if it is healthy or sick. The prices and the conditions of plants now are just not right. I so miss the old plant community. It is great to see the community growing but not like this. Oooohhhh dear. I bought a baby sodiroi (with 2 tiny leaves n one yet to unfurl ) which was sold as Sodiroi variegated to me about 6 weeks ago. It has 4 leaves now (still very small leaves). It has not shown any sign of infection so far and I hav fallen in love with it, My baby. After watching your video, i immediately isolate the plant from the rest of my plant. I decided to keep it until it shown any sign of infection. How long did you first notice the sign of the virus? Can you clearly specify what are the sign? (I noted from the video you said 1 yellow variegation 2. small leaf 3. new leaf unfurling 4. sick looking leaf ie. blotch variegation n leaf not looking "strong". Please correct me if i said anything wrong. Is there a lab test that can be done to be completely sure? I hav watched other plant youtuber test their plant for virus in orchid community so surely someone can do some lab test to be sure. I know i sound paranoid but we r in the middle of a pandemic so it is certainly beneficial to be 100% certain. Worry plant parent here.

    • @onlyplants
      @onlyplants  3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I bought a tiny tissue culture sodiroi for $20(USA) I was able to seperate the plant into 5 different babies. 2 of those babies are now putting out white & yellow splashes. It's crazy because one of the leaves actually has a big blob of white & looks like real variegation vs weird patterns usually shown up with mosaic virus. Thanks for this information. I will move the babies away from the rest of my collection. Theyre in my propagation tote right now in seperate pots though. I'm honestly curious to see what happens to them so I may hold on to them just to study. 😊
    I'm curious though, I wonder how common is it to find a true variegated Sodiroi ?

    • @onlyplants
      @onlyplants  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      True variegated sodiroi probably exists and in the same abundance as other variegated philodendrons (which is very rare). Unfortunately these spots on TCed sodirois are not variegation, but sign of illness - probably mosaic virus). Although there is still a chance that you have struck gold 😌 dont give up yet

    • @strokesfan1251
      @strokesfan1251 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@onlyplants is tissue culture not one of the methods to avoid mosaic though? It only spreads to the babies via vegetative propagation. TC and seedling propagation are the main proposed ways to save infected commercial crops.

    (Anyone reading the comments) I got one today and it has yellow variegation but the newest leaves don’t. Is it just sport?

    • @onlyplants
      @onlyplants  ปีที่แล้ว

      If its only one leaf with variegation its probably a random sport… you can try to propagate that node theres a very slight chance the new vine might be variegated.
      But if a lot of the lower leaves are variegated then the top leaves may have just reverted to green

    Hi Sean,
    Could you please do a video on how to differentiate between Philodendrons, Alocasia and Colocasia? They sometimes do have similiar features between them.
    Also before I can even get to know the features of some variety of each type, there are already new hybrids coming out!
    I am familiar with Calladium and Calathea, they are so common in Malaysia.

    • @onlyplants
      @onlyplants  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Philodendrons are quite different with alocasias. But colocasias are quite similar with alocasias and can be confusing. I believe colocasias are from Asia and alocasias are mostly from south america. Will look into it further :)

    Most mosaic viruses don't spread via foliar contact and are typically spread by pests. I spread Hippeastrum Mosaic Virus around the greenhouses one time to a few susceptible plants from mealybug infection.

    • @onlyplants
      @onlyplants  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for that info! I have a feeling these were infected from tissue culture production? Maybe the tissue taken was already compromised… because thousands of these occurred at the same time/batch

    • @tylertaylor4384
      @tylertaylor4384 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@onlyplants Yeah TC taken from viral infections will result in all the offspring being viral. Same with rooted cuttings. From my understanding the only way most viral infections can jump from plant to plant is from direct contact with a wound so a sucking pest jumping from plant to plant, or cutting on multiple plants with unsterilized tools. But two plants rubbing up against each other shouldn't be an issue. In general its a good idea to isolate infected plants though to prevent that. I have several specimens in the greenhouses at the Botanic Gardens that I can't get rid of due to the rarity but they suffer from incurable diseases, I keep them quarantined and try out different things to see if they can be salvaged.

      Pretty easy to tell if it is a pathogen if you have a cutting from a healthy unaffected plant. If you graft a healthy cutting and a symptomatic one and the healthy one starts showing symptoms later then it's definitely a pathogen of some sort.
