I was really enjoying the video as I decided to go down to read the comments. Everyone complementing you and I was about to do the same when I saw the subscriber count and WHAT?! You deserve WAAAYY more followers, your content is so excellent. Anyway keep your unique style, I'll be aware if you post anything new. Thank you!
I just wanna say wow man, this looks like it took some real hard work to make and it doesn't seem like you're a big content creator group ( yet ;) ) and still this video is very well crafted so mad props. When I noticed the amount of views and then subs count I realized you must have appeared in many more home pages on YT, and you deserve it. That said, I think you can do some really minor changes to improve this video's (and perhaps future content?) quality: I would've liked a longer edit of the riff on the start just to know what we're talking about, I haven't listened to tool in a few years so I'm rusty and didn't get the riff till the end really... also, the whispering part was fine if it was a bit slower I guess or just a bit more volume to it, I'm listening through speakers and didn't get a word of it. Lastly, well, I get that it's a family-friends kind of video so the edits with the ghost/demon/thing were supposed to be a comic relief from an otherwise hardcore music theory video but I just didn't get it and it was drawing attention from what is (I think) the main content of the video. I tried to make it as polite as possible, I mean no disrespect and hope you have a great time both on the tour and/or making content :)
This is a great video and you’re funny. And you explain things well and clearly love tool. I’d watch a lot more of you breaking down tool songs. Also, songs from Discipline by King Crimson can really easily demonstrate polymeter and phasing. Also Music for 18 Musicians by Steve Reich. If you don’t know either of those albums, I think they’ll tickle your think-feels. Thanks for making something awesome. Good luck with catfish!
Russell Heldt same! I wonder how the hell I make it anywhere since my foot is thumping the pedal, my hands are air drumming, guitaring....and my lead vocals are off the chain! Oh and I’m not a musician....Music Gods send me driving angels
i discovered tool a couple months ago and around that time i was listening to the pot and got into a car accident.... next time im pulling over until the songs over
As a prog and fusion drummer I can seriously give you my word that this is one of the most challenging song that I ever learned. Hell I can't even nail the final climatic part of this song. And trust me I have played some Dave Weckl, when he was in Chick Corea (some Gary Novak too), Vinnie Colaiuta, Gavin Harrison (both in King Crimson and Porcupine Tree), even some Carter Beauford. But this thing called *ROSETTA STONNED* is a monster on the drums. Let me just skip the whole insane part of the first two act of the song (which does include some sick chops, a insane 9/8 patter on the snare, tom and hi hat and that weird offbeat hi hat sizzle while he is alsooooo playing in odd time of 11/8 broken in 5/8 and 6/8) and come in after the drummer solo in the middle around the part where the bass comes in : Danny carey is playing a rudiment called Swiss Army Triplet in 6/4 time signature with his hands( F R L, but he actually starts with the R) and on the 3th quater note, he breaks the 16th note swiss pattern and put an accent on the 3rd quater note with his left hand, which is quite hard, mind you (and also don'tforget he breaks it agin every now and then to play some right hand accents on the bell of the ride). Ohh but it doesn't end there, and after that Danny's bass drum feet is actually playing in 5/4 time in a crazy insane patter which changes three times throughout the song, like the 5/4 bass drum patter after the solo, during that bass roff and after the climax are wayyyyyyy different. And also don't forget the quater not hi hat stomps on his left foot which I actually count in 3/4 as it is easier for at the last quater of that bar, it coincides with the left hand accent on the open snare. And funally at the climax, when Adam.is playing in that 11/4 guitar riff, Maynard and Danny comes in at 5/4 and then Danny does the same very hard and complex 6/4 Siss Triplet patters with his hands while the his right bass foot, though it is in 5/4, it is different pattern than bwfore (as I have earlier said) and this patter is more challenging as it is faster and complex. And then that bass patter changes into a 5/4 double bass which makes my brain blow to kingdom come as playing it above the 6/4 broken down, modified Swiss Army patter is more difficult than riding a Hooker on Steroids. And there you have it, in a nutshell : Danny's hands are in a complex, broken down Swiss Army Triplet in 6/4 with left hand single accents on the snare, the bass drum right foot is in 5/4 which has three different patterns throughout the song and his left hi hat foot is in 3/4 (or 6/4) gluing everything together in Quater notes. All in all this is a bloody hard song on the drums, like realllyyyyyyy hard song
@Blade of Despair, Thanks for posting; you made me $2 on a bet I had with my band's sitar player. I'm the bassist in a dixieland hip-hop bluegrass Mongolian Klesmer band here in Alaska, and I'd tried to make your very point. Also, as part of the wager, she now has to learn the final guitar solo from Comfortably Numb from the "Pulse" album -- all 11 or 12 choruses.....
Kinda reminds me of Lars Ulrich on that Metallica song. He begins the sequence by playing the kick drum on 1 and 3, and while maintaining that pattern, he deftly lays down this intricate pattern on the snare, playing on 2 and 4. I've even known him to really push the boundaries by putting the snare on 1 and 3, with the kick on 2 and 4. He's been known to do this while also playing either quarter notes, or 8th notes on the hi hats. It boggles the mind! 🥁🤣
I was thinking the same thing. My music theory knowledge ends at tee tee ta, but this guy is very funny and entertaining 😁 Maybe I can pick something up.

It was a perfect mix of information, explanations, and humor. Please never stop making videos like these!! I’ve been playing bass for about 17 years now, and I never could’ve of explained it this well. this was such an awesome explanation. I love Justin! Adam, I've never seen any of your vids before. It was well-made, well-paced, had useful visual references, and was unexpectedly very funny. I legitimately laughed, out loud, not just exhaling slightly heavier than normal from my nostrils as is usually the case when people type "LMFAOQYIOEWYTRIUWPR" or whatever you kids are e-texting nowdays. What I'm saying is, I liked, I favorited, I put on my practice playlist, and I subscribed. Sorry I'm so late to the party! Great vid!
Thank God we don't have to work these groves in reverse. It's simple to play a groove and then map it out especially with the software that will do it for you. If it had to be a product of theory first I wonder if it would ever turn out as awesome as it does. Not sure if I made sense but it sure did to me. And Adam, you are genuinely funny. I was laughing thru most of the video and had to rewind it several times as a result.
I like you, man. Humor’s not exactly my style, but that’s more personal. I appreciate that you mentioned Adam’s video. This video did help round out that one for me. These concepts are a little tough for me, so well done.

Thank you so very much. i also have watched drum covers of Danny Careys drumming. Lateralus just blew my mind in how you could even get your arms and hands and eyes to do so many things at once
This is one of the best instructional videos out there, and you were also fucking around much of the time. Entertaining and educational. Much respect. Keep it up.
Really well put together ! Love your sense of humor 🤣 . This video explains Tool's music perfectly ! Way better then my "there's a beat to a different beat that's off beat from the rest off what's going on" explanation lol
Dude.....i loved your breakdown of that intense middle section. I remember the first time I heard it....Danny made me feel like I wasnt a drummer anymore, just a fan listening
New to the channel and lovin' it. Clearest explanation of the concept I've seen and I'm a composer! Informative yet hilarious throughout. I'm an Adam Neely groupie so loved the inside reference! Rock on.

You are an odd duck, dude. I learned some stuff I didn't need to know about Tool's rhythms but it will get me into the music that much deeper, like a fat little parasite. And even when I wasn't really learning, it was fun. Earlier I watched a reaction video for Rosetta Stoned and that riff ripped my guts out when it kicked, just like always.
this video caught my attention because i've listened to Fear Inoculum nonstop since its release, but the only Tool song i've listened to since the release was Rosetta Stoned.
Since I have very little formal music knowledge to start with my head is swimming in molasses after this, lol... I'm sure you explained it well and broke it down as much as possible...
I “brute forced” this and managed to learn it pretty well (in my head, mind you. I don’t even play drums but if I did I would probably get a hernia or something). Brute forcing it only took me about 8 or 9 years.
What a fucking cracking video this is. Thoroughly enjoyed it and was great to see this section of such a great song broken down. What a gem this is in tonight’s TH-cam rabbit-holing. Big props sir.
First, this video is awesome. Second, this reminds me of learning drums in High School. I don't remember the word polyrhythm being used, but I remember reading sheet music that had this going on. I do it now, not as good as tool, on string instruments and didn't even know it.
I thought you did a superb job of explaining ploy-rhythm. I really thought the corky jokes were quite funny I wouldn’t change any thing about this video great job.
I'm tempted to make three comments to get you to 333 but you really need 332 to match the title so enjoy it for the minute a Tool tagged video stays blowered up! GJ subbed.
Drumming for approximately 40 years has always been an adventure in the new .... TOOL has changed the way drummers drum for the better. Love playing Tool.
For some reason this bass line makes me crack up laughing it’s a glitch in the matrix... it’s absolutely ridiculous how godly they are.. so glad to have seen them live in Cleveland
The freaky thing is that Danny Carey really juggles three beats at once. • Steady quarter notes with the left foot and snare accent in 3/4. The quarter clicks pervade the whole section, just starting on the quieter hi-hat before transitioning to the electronic pedal mentioned at 10:31. • Bass drum ostinato pattern in 5/16. • Swiss army triplets in 12/16 with both hands. This has the same duration as 3/4 but is structured around groupings of 3/16 instead of 4/16. Somehow he has some spare brain capacity to play minor variations as well in the part with the hi-hat. How does one decide to play this and actually pull it off?
The thing that I love about music is that you can have no rhythm personally, which I don't, and know nothing about music, which I don't, and can still appreciate that Tool is genius. Loved your video.
245th Sub! When I saw you had only 244, I had to do a double take. What what WHAAAT!? How is it not 244,000!? Excellent vid, brotha! Keep rockin’ the bass. 🤘🏽😁

The humor made me learn better. Dark magic, magic cards and metal really make the world a better place.
Not to mention the reference to the Old Ones
3:4 or 4:3 “pass the golden butter”. You’ll be emphasizing the dominant 3 in the beat. “Pass butter to the left” you’ll hear the dominant 4.
Apparently Danny Carey actually learned it as “pass the goddamn butter” so using the method seems pretty fitting

Dude, first of your videos that I've seen, really cool. And I like your humour, keep up the good work!
Extremely entertaining and I like the intellectual analysis
This video is sooo good made me want to learn this riff! Hope you'll find the time to give us more content with that quality!
Solid info and fun as well! Good to see someone explaining it so others can grasp it easier. Killin' it!
First video I've ever seen from you..... and I'm glad I clicked. Fantastic information and insight with a sprinkle of sparse mustache. I'll subscribe!
What a fucking cracking video this is. Thoroughly enjoyed it and was great to see this section of such a great song broken down. What a gem this is in tonight’s TH-cam rabbit-holing. Big props sir.
good stuff Adam...thanks for the info and the laughs!
As this is one of my favorite bass lines of all time and I’m slightly obsessed with it thank for making an entire video about the dang thing.
I finally understand this part, thanks to you. This was the piece of a puzzle I couldn't find in the Tool arsenal :)
You are brilliant. I hope you are using you talents to good use.
This was the exact video I've been wanting to see. 😬
That was way more fun to watch than I expected. Subscribed!
You're like a mix of Pete Cottrell and Kmac ... love it
First, this video is awesome. Second, this reminds me of learning drums in High School. I don't remember the word polyrhythm being used, but I remember reading sheet music that had this going on. I do it now, not as good as tool, on string instruments and didn't even know it.
I thought you did a superb job of explaining ploy-rhythm. I really thought the corky jokes were quite funny I wouldn’t change any thing about this video great job.
great video, good editing.. great information, funny and you played the shit out of it at the end, you killed it man.
This was a great breakdown! I was watching Tool videos and came across this. I love the way you explain everything, and I like your face!
I very much enjoyed this. Had me crackin up. Thanks!
I'm tempted to make three comments to get you to 333 but you really need 332 to match the title so enjoy it for the minute a Tool tagged video stays blowered up! GJ subbed.
Really enjoyed the humor. Awesome video.
I stayed for the whole thing....good job
This was so much FUN! AND YOU ARE REALLY FUNNY... you could teach!
Too funny and I had no idea as a new drummer I was playing this pattern. But it makes sense to me now.
Drumming for approximately 40 years has always been an adventure in the new .... TOOL has changed the way drummers drum for the better. Love playing Tool.
Damn nice, thanks now everybody at the pool is asking why thighs are red
Rosetta Stoned is one of my all time favorite songs in the history of mankind
I'm sure you already know this, but still like hearing it. You're awesome dude
I definitely thought this channel would have more than 300 subs, great job dude! Ignore the haters saying its too cringey, I enjoyed it all
For some reason this bass line makes me crack up laughing it’s a glitch in the matrix... it’s absolutely ridiculous how godly they are.. so glad to have seen them live in Cleveland
A VASTLY SUPERIOR ADAM NEELY VIDEO i hollered☠️
What a great video!! Thank you for your time, passion, and hard work! Subscribed!
Your a great teacher! Thanks for the breakdown 👍
bruh you are hilarious and the info is actually solid
The thing that I love about music is that you can have no rhythm personally, which I don't, and know nothing about music, which I don't, and can still appreciate that Tool is genius. Loved your video.
F'n tripper, love it.... subscribed!
Lol! Subbed just because this made me laugh. Hope your touring went well
Top fucking notch, mate. Professional grade content, I must say.
I learned SO MUCH from this video!!!
245th Sub! When I saw you had only 244, I had to do a double take. What what WHAAAT!? How is it not 244,000!? Excellent vid, brotha! Keep rockin’ the bass. 🤘🏽😁
Thank you, sir!
I'm still scared scheitless to listen the latest t00l album as it just might eventually break me, but you may have opened the door a bit for me and I just might give it a try. Cheers!
Dude this was hilarious. Instant sub
