OK, before the negative comments that accuse me of "You don't know what you are doing!', or "You are doing it wrong!" I will stress one more time I am a complete novice with these pans, using them for the first time. Going only by the manufacturer's demonstration videos and other TH-cam videos. I have taken what I have learned from watching these and trying to make it fit the situation I have here. Yes I make mistakes. Also I am using the most difficult material I can find for these tests, no chance of 100% recovery from ANY pan. If I wanted Higher recovery rates from every pan I would have got easier material with bigger gold. But I wanted losses so I could emphasize or separate the pans recovery rates more. If they all showed 100% it would not be much of a comparison.
There's a newer video of how to its more about getting everything moving and stratified. You don't want it sloshing from one side to the other. Small quick back and forth motions. I use the regular and love it. I just bounce it back and forth between my hands quickly while tipping it and I have good results. If you get a chance try that out. I'd love to hear what the capture rate was then
Hi Dan. I love watching your videos. You seem worried about comments. I think you have been very fair about all your reviews. Remember opinions are like arseholes everyone has one! Keep up the good work
Hi Dan, will you be putting the super sluice through the same test? I'd be interested in seeing you detail your production panning technique with the Garrett.
To reduce on arm strain, it is meant to be stratified under the water level. Once you gain experience and become comfortable with the pan, you can more rapidly tilt until completely vertical and go much faster. The deep riffles are pretty safe. It is also designed to be used without having to classify. So if you can get close to 80-85% recovery on a full pan every minute, as we all know, it's all about how much material you can process. Thanks for the video Dan!
I love my production pan. I too have a prototype production pan. The ease and speed of the production pan is amazing. The gold claw series of pans are absolute game changers. I use mine dry panning to cons in the Arizona Desert and even dry panning it will capture some super fine gold specs. I have all 3 gold claw pans in my Jeep at all times. Great to get through a large quantity of material in a fast manner. Yes the production pan can get heavy but with a little practice, the process is phenomenal. I highly recommend the gold claw pans
Hey Dan, I have a gold claw and I find that you have to use only the left/right stratifying motion the whole time until the pan is at a vertical angle. Lifting the pan or washing like you do with a normal pan will wash gold out the sides because of the shape of the pan. You have to use a stratifying motion the whole time, slowing down the more vertical your pan gets.
Think the high loss count is to do with the color Dan. Chris from Vo- Gus tested a pink one, and obtained better results lol!!! Just choking your chain dude, another great unbiased review. Thanks again....
Hey Dan... With garret pan u got in 30 minits 100% gold. But with claw u got ~ 78-81 % but u did it in 6 time faster... With a better gold, it will capture ~ 90%. Thanks a lot. Happy to see again
I live in Florida and have zero chance of ever going gold prospecting and don't even really want to, but still find myself watching this channel because of your enthusiasm and quality of the information your provide Dan.
Hi Dan, My experience with much finer gold and matrix than you are dealing with has shown that when you tip the pan while shaking the gold travels along the surface of the pan much slower than the blondes flow well above it. You might try to stratify for at least ten seconds, then fairly briskly tip while shaking until about a third of the material is out of the pan, then come back to flat, re stratify and repeat until down to black sand. It works on 500 mesh gold in 30 mesh matrix at about 95% recovery into the black sand in about 3 minutes with 2 lb batches in a 10" pan. The finish is much different though as it uses different physics.
I don't know how anyone could give you a hard time. You made it very clear you are evaluating these as an experienced at panning, but new at this pan. Keep the reviews coming. I will never buy one or mine for gold, but I love watching your videos all the same. It is fascinating.
Really excited to hear that they are doing a production pan. Been using their other pans for just over a year now. Very pleased with them and sure they will work out the issues before full production. Great video.
Hi Dan, I’m a great fan from eastern Canada, I was good friend of Klint, He send me the same printed demo also, It work pretty, but it should be used carefully with different material, the shaking motion and the tilting will change between different material, specially with a black sand loaded pan or supercon, should recess riffle sometime, The great issue about the goldclaw is what klint say by itself « "I initially built the Gold Claw Pan thinking professional or seasoned miners would take to it naturally, and that beginners would struggle as they normally do. I quickly discovered I was wrong. People who have been panning for years have muscle memory, they use traditional swirling and dipping motion without even thinking about it" said Washburn. "For most people that have been panning for a while, their old techniques have become subconscious and they have to unlearn and retrain their brain and muscles to stop swirling and washing and instead to start using the side to side shake and tilt method. I was surprised to find that it’s the newcomers that take right to it"
Hi Dan. Thank you for the time you have taken to review all the pans available. It seems to me you are very balanced and equitable in your conclusions. The manufacturers are fortunate to have the benefit of your experience. Great job from (warming up slowly) Western Australia
Dan, fair review for really being the first time using the Gold Claw pan. I know it's so hard to go against the muscle memory, and techniques you've used for years. The Gold Claws excel at plowing through dug unclassified dirt, and bringing it down to tiny amounts of concentrates. I look forward to the rest of your production pan reviews.
The people that gave a thumbs down to this video should be ashamed of themselves. If a person is doing the thing they love and are showing you to the best or their ability and not using clickbait you should respect that!!! they are taking time out of their life to better yours!!!!
When I keep the most of the pan under the water the whole time made the difference for me it took a few times to get the feel. I wanted to swirl, now it seems I can’t swirl good anymore and choose the claws first now.
Yes the technique caused some loss here. In a few places. Not bad for your first tries. I panned 100 litres of black sand from the beach during lock down. Tested with several pans and the gold claw was the best one by far with near 100 percent capture rate and it was fairly quick by the end. Imagine a pan with 95 percent black sand and the gold was powdered. Very difficult normally but with good technique it got it all enough times that i became confident in it.
Enjoying the comparison videos. I have standard gold claw, still getting used to it, almost seems counter intuitive to use, but i actually like the small size because of less weight to panning even if it means taking longer to process a bucket of material. Great job on the video production. Thanks.
Always enjoy your videos. I have this pan and have used it for some time. It is simple to use but one does have to develop their technique to use it properly. Best advice is pretty much forget everything you know about how to use a round pan when using this one. I have seen the manufacturer videos and they are good for understanding how to use them. I mine a lot of clay and dirt for gold. My tests indicate I have to go slower with it than the manufacturer shows. I also finish my cons in a Garret Super Sluice because of the muddy water. If I were stream side, I might finish the cons in the Claw. I am in the northern Sonoran Desert, not too many flowing streams or rivers around here. Final thought is they are great pans. The big production pan will require some good upper body strength even with a small scoop of material due to it's size and having to manipulate it under water. The next size down pan is absolutely great! The jury is still out on the pocket pan.
I like the Gold Claw pans lot easier to use then the round pans . I was having trouble using the Gold Claw at first then seen the demo at a GPAA gold and treasure show and .Was shown the correct way of using it and tried it myself . I use the medium size pan of the pans of Gold Claw .Takes less time then if I could use the round pans , just can not get the round pans down on using them but I keep on working at using the round pans tried for years Enjoy your videos keep them coming
Dan another great video hell with the bad comments. It will keep someone from buying a bad pan. Good work! Glad to see you using tough panning material. Deward Taylor

DAN, i have never used any sorta pan before just a sliuce , and miller table, so the 2 pans i have 1 is a garrett, wich belongs to my brother and i just got one thats called the best dammed gold pan, all the stuff i run is sifted down to 1/8th. in. thats cause the gold is almost fly poop in size, no matter if it comes from the beach or comes from creeks, so i am a novice when it comes to using pans,, thank you for the videos,, be safe, be strong, be free, be blessed
Just subscribed to the channel. I happened to find you when I couldn't sleep at 3 in the morning and become hooked. I grew up with my parents taking me to antique shows and yard sale so I get why you love the "treasure hunt".
Y'all a very honest guy Dan. I like that almost as much as your prospecting expertise. All the best from Naples Florida where the only gold you'll find is at the beach in lost jewelry and coins from shipwrecked Spanish galleons.
Hi Dan, Nice job. I saw another demo that says don't jig side to side too much or you will lose some gold.. The guy showed a slightly more subdued jigging. and you do a little less as you go. i thought you did pretty good. Thanks for showing us. Also, It seems like everyone is demonstrating the small one. Thanks for doing the big one.. i like.
Wow this one looks amazing! The tilting/shaking motion makes me a little nervous though. Also the ~80% capture rate is not bad considering you plowed through a half bucket it 5 minutes.
I have the smaller ones and they work great. Also have the Garrett Super Sluice, which I find a bit heavy if I fill it up. Buying all these different gold pans and sluices can get expensive, plus storage problems. You doing these reviews is a great idea! Thanks, Dan.
Nice honest review with consistent controls in place to give a good comparative of all the pans. Good Job Dan, love your videos. Looks like a humming bird swooped in for a look at 15:44. Top right of the screen. :)
Great review Dan! With losses of only 19% and using it as a novice for the first time then I would have to believe that once a person honed their technique with this pan that it would be a descent production pan. But that’s just my opinion. I’ve never used a Gold Claw and would probably not purchase one just because I can take a Garret or Minelab pan and typically catch all the gold even with hard to pan material. Round pans are what I started with and they’re very easy to use for me. I started with the Garret pans and after gaining some experience I purchased a Minelab Pro 15” pan and it’s like the perfect pan for me. When I use it it’s a very natural feeling pan just like it’s a part of me. Lol. Just my opinion. Thanks Dan. Take care and stay safe and healthy and gold luck and heavy pans.
Interesting pan as well, but I'm like Dayna, don't want anything too heavy. Found myself moving my phone from side to side to help you pan it out. 😁 Another super video. Thank you.
Panned out 3lbs. of pay dirt with a 2 gram guarantee using a small finishing pan with my garret SS for a catch pan. Recovered 2.08gr. but when I panned the tailings in the garret I recovered an additional .14gr. That garret caught some really small stuff and is actually the better finishing pan as well as being a great, nay, the best production pan on the planet.
Dan, You did a great job on this review. I like how you decided to demo with comingled gravels vs pea gravel and fist-size rocks. I think that the gold claw is a great tool however I am not so sure that the stratification or liquefaction is effective enough to cause all the heavies to drop all the way to the bottom of the pan. Yes this pan catches paydirt bag size gold 30 mesh and larger however when dealing with small particles mass must be considered as well as density when observing gold in suspension. Other complaints are that it is necessary to have a deep washtub tub or a deep hole in a stream just to fit the vertical pan. That is annoying. When sampling an area I like to see all the gold however fine it may be knowing that most of the gold is pretty small.
Hi Dan- Considering the videos are on production pans I will take 80% capture rate and move a lot more material. Thank You for the educational videos I have learned quite a bit from you great job explaining everything !
That is a gorgeous location. Thanks for sharing your tests with us. It's very interesting. I'll bet you are correct about being a novice with that particular pan. I suspect there may be a couple of tips and tricks that will make it perform a little better. Good job with the video. I love your videography of the surrounding areas. The video where with you waved at the train and the train engineer waved and honked back was great LOL. Loved it. Take care and stay safe.
Dan, you're holding it up above the water too much and that's why it's very heavy. Submerse it deeper in a bigger Tub and it'll work fast like the other two Claw Pans.
Although a nice looking pan. It would be too heavy for me too. As for the loss of the gold that is why a safety basin is a great idea in case you lose some. Thank you for sharing. Dan I hope you and your family and friends are staying safe and healthy. ;)
The inventor when demonstrating the regular size at a show made a point that it is hard to use for a person good at using a normal pan. Try keeping it submerged at all times. Just stratify. Slightly slower tipping rate might help.
Another great review of a product from the world of pans. I think you worked the pan just like myself. Real life use. Great pro's and cons. Great job Dan. Still looking for ward to more! Thank you.
I just got the complete set coming for Christmas at a amazing deal, I look forward to how it will work out here in the Colorado Rockies mountains definitely studying the technique! As many many years of round panning may be harder to break! All the best Dan
your so open to try everybody's pans without harsh judgement, that's a bonus, we will all learn from this and find out what works for "us"....but I gotta ask...if your using the same paydirt each time wouldn't it be getting easier each time by washing away the clay and stuck gold and ya know gravel and freeing the gold easier for the next time? I don't know! just asking...I just wanna learn! thank you for all you teach us..
The material was used before this test was filmed so it already broke any clay up. yes the first time it would be different, but any time after that is about the same.
It does seem to be hard for the pro Paners to get used to the idea of the gold claws motions and techniques but for you all is forgiven thanks for sharing love the videos and glad you have a website I'm a avid dirt buyer and it's really cool getting something that I might have watched you gather Have a great day and prospect on
I kinda like the look of this pan but I would probably want it about 6 inches less in width. I would also like to see a more gradual slope from the bottom to the big riffles. More like the slope on your Garret pan. As it is you have a very vertical side and then a sharp drop over the riffles which could easily allow flakes to wash over the riffles without touching them. I don't know if I explained that well but I hope you understand.
That seems like a great solution for those who may be limited to panning only locations. They could easily concentrate large quantities of material. For regular panning I really prefer my Garrett super sluice gold pan!
I thought you did a grand job using that pan.I have just received mine and new to me also.Clint showed me first hand-now my turn.Hoping I hope I do as well as you. David out
Another great review and certainly with more practice with that pan or any pan especially when like you said it feels different not washing off the layers. Fraser looks awesome wishes it was that low now! Thanks

Great video Dan If the small pan is the Gold Claw That should be called The Gold Mouth Really hope the different suppliers take you up on your offer I would love to hear the story and inspiration behind the pans Thanks Dan me and my boys love the adventures you share
While I'm enjoying this series, I think the idea of a production pan is silly. That is unless you have no other choice by being limited in what your allowed to use. As far as the gold claw goes, I love my set, but think it really shines as a sampler and a cleaning pan. Production is best left to other devices and pans best used for the very beginning and end process. Also, the big thing about the gold claw is not having to classify. You throw in the whole mix of sand, dirt, gravel and larger rocks. By shaking and tilting, it dumps out the larger stiff and is very fast - hence my opinion that it makes an excellent sample pan. And going slow, an excellent cleaning device.

Dan Hurd - keeping me sane in an insane world!
I like the fact that you are a novice with the new pans. I would be a novice using them so it is a big help!
That is my thought as well. Yes I made mistakes, but everyone will starting out.
Thank you for doing these evaluations. It helps your veiwers.
Very honest review. Thank you for that. NOW, you have earned my subscription. Keep up the great work.
Much appreciated!
Hi Dan-
Considering the videos are on production pans I will take 80% capture rate and move a lot more material.
Thank You for the educational videos I have learned quite a bit from you great job explaining everything !
Thanks!
Well, I clicked on this video cause, I had never seen that type of gold pan. I'm like you I'm used to my regular pan.
I have on it works, still easier to use the Garrett's gold pan though. In my opinion a gimmick, fad or join the crowd type pan use your best judgement
Love to see Dan do reviews
That is a gorgeous location. Thanks for sharing your tests with us. It's very interesting. I'll bet you are correct about being a novice with that particular pan. I suspect there may be a couple of tips and tricks that will make it perform a little better. Good job with the video. I love your videography of the surrounding areas. The video where with you waved at the train and the train engineer waved and honked back was great LOL. Loved it. Take care and stay safe.
Thank you!
So beautiful there! You did the testing just how I want to see it! Kind of a worst-case scenario for lack of better words! Thanks!!
You're welcome
Another great review of a product from the world of pans. I think you worked the pan just like myself. Real life use. Great pro's and cons. Great job Dan. Still looking for ward to more! Thank you.
Thanks for watching!
No offence to the other guys but so far I'm liking that flat blue thingy you used in the video that showed all the pans.
I just got the complete set coming for Christmas at a amazing deal, I look forward to how it will work out here in the Colorado Rockies mountains definitely studying the technique! As many many years of round panning may be harder to break! All the best Dan
Dan the pan man....
Dan's the BEST!!!
your so open to try everybody's pans without harsh judgement, that's a bonus, we will all learn from this and find out what works for "us"....but I gotta ask...if your using the same paydirt each time wouldn't it be getting easier each time by washing away the clay and stuck gold and ya know gravel and freeing the gold easier for the next time? I don't know! just asking...I just wanna learn! thank you for all you teach us..
The material was used before this test was filmed so it already broke any clay up. yes the first time it would be different, but any time after that is about the same.
To me this looks like the best non standard style pan.
Good review.
It does seem to be hard for the pro Paners to get used to the idea of the gold claws motions and techniques but for you all is forgiven thanks for sharing love the videos and glad you have a website I'm a avid dirt buyer and it's really cool getting something that I might have watched you gather Have a great day and prospect on
Another great video and review Dan. Looking forward to the rest of the reviews.😀
Thanks! 👍
sweet vid dan great to see the differant pans and what they can do
That works great. GOLD SQUAD OUT!!
Absolutely
Love these demo’s! I didn’t even know there were so many styles of gold pans! Thanks Dan👍🏻. Be safe and HH🎧⛏
I thought you did a grand job using that pan.I have just received mine and new to me also.Clint showed me first hand-now my turn.Hoping I hope I do as well as you. David out

Awesome video again, Dan!! Can't wait for the next video.

Another great review and certainly with more practice with that pan or any pan especially when like you said it feels different not washing off the layers. Fraser looks awesome wishes it was that low now! Thanks
I totally agree! I'm itching to get back out on the Fraser
Thank you for the Info Dan and your videos are always fun to watch

These videos are helping me pick a good pan. Thanks again
Great to hear!
Id personally like to see you revist some of your earlier topics, such as spiral wheels, blue bowls, trommels, miller tables etc with your additional experience with the equipment and with video making
Great interview, can't wait for the next one.

Love the videos Dan.
Thanks!
Great Job Dan!
Thanks!
Morning Dan I bought the smaller version of the claw in January. I have had similar results to yours.
