When I went to go see Hadestown on Broadway, I spent a good chunk of the musical just silently going "I do that!!!" at Orpheus. During intermission, my mom told me that she thought Orpheus was definitely Autistic because she could very easily see me doing a lot of the things that he does. Turns out that Reeve Carney actually has diagnosed ADHD and used that to help inform the way he plays Orpheus. Maybe not strictly Autistic Orpheus, but definitely not NT Orpheus. _Every single thing_ about this character makes me feel so incredibly seen, even down to the specific actor that has played him on Broadway since it first opened. This role is why I started thinking I could actually play an instrument, and it's why I started trying to learn guitar back in 2021. If Reeve Carney could learn a whole entire instrument and be a successful actor while having ADHD, then maybe there's hope for me even with my ADHD/Autism diagnosis double-feature.
ok but it makes me a lil teary eyed to think abt how this character, who may not have been written with the intention of him being neurodivergent but can definitively be seen that way, is described as “touched by the gods themselves” like DAMN🥹
Dang. How relatable is this man!!! No wonder I've always felt a kinship with Orpheus. The way he's played here is beautifully awkward and aloof and socially awkward. Might have to add him to my imaginary list of roles I want to play.
Lol I’m glad someone else saw him as autistic, watching and rewatching this musical was so great cus I kept watching it and being like, “Omg!!! He’s like me!!!” Cus I’m also a high-empathy autistic person lol
If we learned anything from the Rick Riordan books, it's that some Greek Demigods might be on the spectrum because their brains are wired for Ancient Greek. I hope I don't offend anyone.
He’s sooooo charismatic I can totally understand why historically rivers and trees would defy biology and come closer to him to listen to his music. Because he’s super cuteeeeeeee 😭
Orpheus just wanted to write a song, the wife dying part was a failed side-quest he didn't have the attention span for. But he tried to fix it with a deadline. tried...
Hadestown's Orpheus was considered unrelatable before they made Reeve into this naive incarnation of the character. Previously Orpheus was acted out more like a hearthrob, so he appeared like a douchebag and an asshole. So this neurodivergent thing made him naive, lovable, and relatable, and inevitably contributed to the show's more mainstream success. Subsequent actors who took on Orpheus' role varied the interpretation, but they held onto this frame. But if you watch all of them, you will really notice that the ones that acted more like a hearthrob became less preferred than the ones with more naivette.
As an autistic person I am a bit offended that people are trying to make autism “cute” and “quirky”. It actually pisses me off so much. And it’s always this community (among others) that do this kind of thing. It’s already frustrating enough to see so many people faking the disorder and /or saying they wish they had autism. I just wish people would stop romanticizing autism along with other disorders such as adhd and did. I’ve said my piece and maybe some people will come argue because they think its not a big deal. Or maybe they want to argue that it’s just a joke. Maybe I’m overreacting, but this still made me upset. I doubt many people will see this, but I just needed to rant about this.
I am also an autistic person! I understand your position, and I'm sorry that this video upset you. Just as there are many experiences within the autism spectrum, there are many different ways to respond to it.
As an Autistic person who felt deeply seen when I saw how Orpheus was portrayed in Hadestown, that's completely valid. I'd rather be romanticized than demonized, but like... that's a shitty choice to have to make to start with! Hopefully one day all types of neurodivergence will just be A Thing That Exists instead of something that gets either demonized by gross people or romanticized as just "UwU QuIrKy!!!" by folks who don't know better.
Umm...I am that cutesy, quirky autistic person. Plus, Reeve Carney actually based his performance off of an autistic colleague and consulted with the autistic community to make sure he was giving a respectful performance.
Reeve Carney himself actually confirmed in an interview that Orpheus is autistic. So, you’d best be careful or you might end up offending a lot of neurodivergent individuals. Oh wait, you already have.
Why can't both be true? I agree that Orpheus in the original myth in an archetype, and I agree that in a musical adaptation of the myth he needs a justification for his actions at the end to be believable. Why can't that justification be that he's autistic?
i lost it at "hyperfixates so hard his wife dies" its so true

i literally love this guy
ok but this honestly explains the la la la la so much tho
Underrated comment
That’s really interesting- and this was a character choice they developed. The original was a guy with ego and swagger. Nobody found him likable.
i like both versions tbh!

Currently in my Hadestown hyperfixation so this is perfect
Orpheus got a touch of the 'Tism haha like me
so real and true, absolutely based video
Nothing’s more attractive to a woman than a “dumb” guy with a heart of gold who can play guitar.
So adorable, you done good
“You know you’re on the clock, right?”
✨time blindness✨😌
Bro I didnt realize that Orpheus is Nero-divergent too! No wonder I like this musical so much!

I miss Andre shields
Orpheus just wanted to write a song, the wife dying part was a failed side-quest he didn't have the attention span for. But he tried to fix it with a deadline. tried...
oh so this is why i relate to him so hard
The scene where Eurydice goes, “But how’d you get here? On the train?” And he says so bluntly, “No I walked :D”
I just saw it as someone that was nervous
Just because he is socially awkward doesn´t mean he is autistic, but a lot of people love to interpret too much.
That’s fair. The beauty of art is that it isn’t as restrictive as other fields. That means there’s more room for interpretation.
Nervous from trying to figure people out bc he doesn’t understand them
andres LOOK UP tho like boy literally look at the sky

Is he tho? Or is he an archetype who needs justification for doing something stupid at the end of this story?

It’s called being autistic-coded
This implies that autistic people do stupid things...
@@20dabarr58 no it doesn’t. It implies that people are reading into writing that isn’t there
