I think Spiderverse's box office success answers the big question on whether combicbook fatigue actually exists. Which is that it DOESN'T! While the era of audiences going in mass to watch ANY superhero movie blockbuster is gradually coming to a close, that does not mean we've lost interest in superhero movies. We just will not settle for any generic/formulaic movie Marvel or DC pumps out any amore. We've seen everything in terms of 'spectacle' after Avengers Endgame, now we require actual good writing & storytelling to go with it too...just like with any other movie genre. There are no more shortcuts to making box-office successes! I personally believe not having a 100% guaranteed success movie formula at hand anymore will actually be beneficial for both studios and audience in terms of preventing "comicbook fatigue" from actually occurring by having quality over quantity.

Messaging is absolutely a mistake for the studio to seek out or for any of us to ask for. How many flops do we have to witness in order for everyone to understand that entertainment for entertainments sake was the driving force for success since the dawn of film? Andrew Garfield was such an underrated Spiderman. He did great with it. He should be given another chance to finish out the Amazing Spiderman trilogy and be given one more solo movie. I would see it. Mário crossing $1.3B and surpassing the first Frozen’s box office numbers is a dream come true for any video game fan. For decades, video games IPs have been treated as second class citizens by Hollywood executives and now because of Mario’s numbers, things will change.
The only reason Miles is doing great is that cause Disney doesn't have 100% control of it, hands of Spidey folk Disney you have a whole set of characters to keep ruining.
That's possible. We got three live-action Spider-Man movies 2017-2021, with cameos in 3 MCU movies (2016, 2018, 2019), plus Miles and Peter (2018, 2023). There's no way this many appearances would have occurred if he was part of the MCU. Sadly, Sony is fixated on the (really bad) idea of Spidey's rogues' gallery in stand-alone movies.
Hi Grace. Sanna Marin, the Finnish Prime Minister didn't resign. She lost an election and will remain in office until the new government takes over. It was New Zealand's prime minister Jacinda Arden who resigned while still in office.
Here’s the reality Spider-Man Across The Spider-Verse had nothing lose & EVERYTHING to gain. And GAIN THEY DID!! From the initial fan base in theaters to what exploded on Netflix this was a perfect storm. They don’t need multiple weeks to make a statement because they already did opening weekend. Plus they did originally announce it being split into 2 parts but I guess people forgot but this just naturally builds more anticipation for the 3rd installment which will be even bigger. So whether it makes a billion dollars isn’t their endgame. It’s a marathon not a sprint 😉
I truly want this film to win and be a mega financial success, so this becomes the new standard in our industry for quality projects made with love, time and care, over quantity and franchise exploits for financial gain. Accomplishments like this film matters so much to Viewers, Writers, Directors, Executives and V/O actors. Everyone wins in the end.
If Spider-Verse makes x3 it’s opening weekend, it could go as high as $360 million domestically, & I honestly wouldn’t rule out anything higher than that given the incredible WOM. Also, both Fast X & The Little Mermaid seem to be in a similar position box office-wise (doing perfectly fine in one area, drastically underperforming in another)
Across The Spider-Verse was great - but I get the feeling that it's more about the creativity and freshness of the film - and not just Spidey - that's attracting audiences. My 16 year old and his friends went to see it because 'it looks lit and different', and none of them are Spiderman fans. They are now after seeing the movie.
Hey Grace, do you think the reason why Mario and Across the Spider-Verse are so successful is because there's no messages in the movie? People don't want to be preached to, they just want to be entertained.
Actually there is quite a lot of people predicting TLM getting a billion before the film got release especially in box-office subreddit. The opinion quickly change when the pre-ticket sale show the opposite.
As someone who’s never been big on the live action remakes, I am thoroughly enjoying how it’s being crushed by an original animated film (I mean, adapted material but still). BRING ON THE ANIMATED REVOLUTION
I saw Spiderverse and Boogeyman this weekend. Spiderverse was really good, the visuals are so inventive, stuff we could never get in live action. Boogeyman was okay, at least tried to be more then a standard horror, even if it didn’t quite take it all the way.
Anyone with half a brain knew that the last Spiderverse film was the best Spider-Man film to date. Quality writing and execution are rewarded with success. Too bad most of Hollywood isn't figuring out that formula.
Commenting on here before actually watching the video, but I sincerely hope Spider-Man managed to do the Mario movie in at least some kind of box office record. I love Mario, but spider verse is a game changer to the animation community. Not just because of its revolutionary visuals, but because it helped general audiences to take animation more seriously.
I'm so happy that so many people were able to discover the first Spider-Verse on Netflix and decided that they didn't want to miss the experience of the second one i n theaters. It's a good day to be a Spider-Man fan!
Don't compare Across the Universe to MCU. Miles has nothing to do with Black Panther. It was a unique story in its own right and a well-told story that utilised every aspect of creative endeavour to tell that story. Nothing like the MCU!
I think Spider-Verse will have an excellent hold. The word of mouth is glowing. My audience burst into applause at the end. I haven’t seen that happens since Top Gun Maverick.
But it's behaving as a CBM instead of TGM, or an animated film. Saturday's actuals had a slight drop. Everything indicates, so far, 650 million is the ceiling, which is great after the first film's disappointing BO
Well Gwen is getting a movie but animated. As much as I want her live action. She’s still good as cartoon form like in Marvel Rising & her appearing in Ultimate Spider-Man S3.
Across the Spider-Verse is an experience. I seen this movie is a premium screen and standard one. My boyfriend and I saw so many people in Spider-Man merchandise and even the three girls that were talking very loud next to us quickly quiet down as the movie became better and better as time went on.
Perhaps Disney dropped the ball on _The Little Mermaid_ merch like they did with Grogu's, but for different reasons? I hardly saw anyone wearing TLM T-Shirts and only a few little girls dressed up like for a Disney Princess party.
@@MD19853 not spider verse the little mermaid it's need to collect 750 to 800 millions and it's not looking good in international market china south Korea Japan mexico India many more it's collect 120 million world wide and it will not be in the one billion live action Disney movie coz of not doing well international but sure little mermaid will make around 550 or 600 million and it's not about black cast spider verse is doing awesomely great but little mermaid not so much
@Bishop Brown Interesingly enough, the FF movies and spinoffs are have been successful in being diverse without patronising (the main messaging of family has been there since the first film at the beginning).

I wish Disney would create an animated movie featuring a Black prince as the main hero/character. Disney’s most popular prince to date has been Aladdin. Would love to see another Aladdin-like character, and I think that character should be a Black prince.
Don't feel bad for Disney, their IP is dominating; Sony only takes Spidey's tickets, 100% of everything else is Disney; after NWH action figures alone sold over a billion, all is Disney's. Little Mermaid held strong at 57%, Guardians3 held with 50%, Boogeyman had a strong opening weekend.
@@junior523 Your opinion is meaningless "If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, did it make a sound?". Americans made it clear when it opened 120 mil and despite huge competition dropped only 57%. Merch remains a top seller. I knew from early days of production that _Across The Spider-verse_ was part one of two. We've got several like that this year, so we'll see how they fare.
The overseas of the Little Mermaid actually picked up speed after it was initially thought to not have a lot of momentum and also retained a strong hold. So this week actually had more momentum overseas for The Little Mermaid than the previous.
It’s almost like you don’t want the movie to perform well…anyway regardless of it reach a billion I’m glad more audience are embracing the film since it was actually good. Did you even see it?
Read an article saying Mexico, Brazil and the U.K. are driving box office numbers. I was wondering if other countries had their release dates staggered?
I went to see TLM a few days ago. I think the movie is beautiful, however, there are some things that I would have modified before the release, or at least done some re-shoots. I think Halle Bailey is a cute/talented girl, but some of the shots at the beginning of the movie, when she is outside of the water, when she is looking up in the deep ocean, and when she's hiding behind a rock were not flattering. I don't know what it failed in those moments, maybe the lighting or make up?. Other than that, the hyperrealistic take on Flounder and Sebastian did not work, they looked weird and not cute enough. On the other hand, Melissa McCarthy and the actor that played Prince Eric were really good as their respective characters.
The only problem I had was with Flounder: it looked really weird for him to be talking above the surface, even though he did that when animated. Everything else was OK. I hadn't seen the 1989 movie before watching this, so wasn't wound up with comparisons. I've been listening to Disney tunes all week!
Well the original little mermaid is the lowest grossing of the renaissance juggernauts. So there is an argument for it grossing lower than the other live actions. I am at least happy to see that domestically people are loving the film and coming out to see it. Though I wish it was doing better WW. Also I don’t think those other live action movies were selling out toys and merchandise like TLM is doing. Don’t forget the power of high selling merchandise it’s what gave the Cars franchise three films.
Oh quit it! Another soul less Disney live action movie! Just let that be the reason! Many people dont like it, but of course you cherry pick to only believe the good reviews. haha simp.
@@fernycpeclipse That would be nice, but I didn't see a lot of people wearing TLM T-Shirts, compared to so many people wearing Spider-Man shirts this weekend.
The little mermaid movie pretty good live action film. It’s beyond me why Disney release their film with all the competition they will have to deal with. Grace called it in and said it’s simply too much competition and June overly crowded.
@Sandal_Thong I could see that logic but they should have taken into account the loss of premium screens and the run time. Also, as Grace has noted, they didn’t do the film any favors with their initial marketing campaign. It was seriously lacking.
It's still possible more people will go here and in Europe to _The Little Mermaid._ Not everyone feels they have to go opening weekend. I imagine girls in school are talking about it, and might get their friends to go see it. I might see it again in 3D, after I see _Spiderman;_ the competition this week of _About My Father, The Machine, You Hurt My Feelings,_ and _Kandahar_ don't excite me much.

@@capncrunch2573 He's the top choice so far
The only reason Miles is doing great is that cause Disney doesn't have 100% control of it, hands of Spidey folk Disney you have a whole set of characters to keep ruining.
That's possible. We got three live-action Spider-Man movies 2017-2021, with cameos in 3 MCU movies (2016, 2018, 2019), plus Miles and Peter (2018, 2023). There's no way this many appearances would have occurred if he was part of the MCU. Sadly, Sony is fixated on the (really bad) idea of Spidey's rogues' gallery in stand-alone movies.
I'm very happy for Miles Morales. Hopefully with this opening. We will see him in live action sooner rather than later.
Hi Grace. Sanna Marin, the Finnish Prime Minister didn't resign. She lost an election and will remain in office until the new government takes over. It was New Zealand's prime minister Jacinda Arden who resigned while still in office.
Spiderverse 2 was sooooo so so good!!! I can't wait to watch it again next week!
Warner Bros would kill it with their DC lineup for animated movies. Teen Titans and Batman Beyond would make great animated movies!
They had their chance. I’m not sure if the animated universe is as good as it used to be
DC has already killed it for years. Whether they do tent pole animated films remain to be seen.
They haven’t done enough with the Titans brand! You have two generations that grew up with those characters! Do something with them!
Didn't Mr. "Naked and Afraid" Zaslav want to shut down WB's animated studio?
@@sandal_thong8631 he didn’t shut it down, he combined WB Animation with WAG (Warner Animation Group).
Disney: "Bud Light..hold my beer. Ha, you ain't seen nothing yet...." .
If Spider-Verse makes x3 it’s opening weekend, it could go as high as $360 million domestically, & I honestly wouldn’t rule out anything higher than that given the incredible WOM.
Also, both Fast X & The Little Mermaid seem to be in a similar position box office-wise (doing perfectly fine in one area, drastically underperforming in another)
Cool❤
Spider-Man Across the Spiderverse is Awesome
Grace is the reason why I’ve gotten back into movies again. I’m literally at the movies 2-3 times a week and trying to watch all the new films.
Just happy both Miles and Mario are heroes who represent Brooklyn
Randolph says Miles is "like" the new Black Panther. Gee, wonder what makes her say that? 🤔
Well it’s true, audience aren’t very smart they’re biased, kinda like Jonathan major’s people are supporting him simply for the fact that he’s black
Total respect for Grace for the opening spiderverse comments about needing original characters. And comparison with the little mermaid.
Hey Grace, do you think the reason why Mario and Across the Spider-Verse are so successful is because there's no messages in the movie? People don't want to be preached to, they just want to be entertained.
Literally ONLY Grace thought that The little mermaid would be a FOR SURE billion dollar club lol.
At one point in March she didn’t
I think she was hyped for _Fast X_ too. Much as I like Movie Math, fortunately I don't bet/invest on her predictions!
Actually there is quite a lot of people predicting TLM getting a billion before the film got release especially in box-office subreddit. The opinion quickly change when the pre-ticket sale show the opposite.
My nephew loves Miles.. it’s a win win for me being a OG Spider-Man lover
Across the Spider-verse was a 10/10 so happy for its success.
So happy to hear Spiderverse is doing well.
As someone who’s never been big on the live action remakes, I am thoroughly enjoying how it’s being crushed by an original animated film (I mean, adapted material but still). BRING ON THE ANIMATED REVOLUTION
The fast lost its luster after Pauls passing and the insane bring back of dead characters with outrageous plots got way over the top
The day Grace acknowledges Cocomelon or Bluey, is when we should expect the other signs Gozer has returned! 😉🤣🎬❤️
I saw Spiderverse and Boogeyman this weekend. Spiderverse was really good, the visuals are so inventive, stuff we could never get in live action. Boogeyman was okay, at least tried to be more then a standard horror, even if it didn’t quite take it all the way.
So happy for miles morales 🎉
"There aren't any messages.... As of right now, its just entertainment really" - that's why it's making money.
You're basically speaking Chinese to Grace.
Also just watched Transformers and it was so good and refreshing to see an actual finished movie rather than sequel baits
The artistry behind

The spider verse
Needs to be appreciated
It was...it got an Oscar for it
Will be watching Spiderverse tomorrow. So excited. Thankfully haven't come across any spoilers
Spider verse is amazing because of the story it tries to tell. And of course the animation is sick too!
The fan casting for a live action Miles Morales movie after into the spider verse have been pretty good!! Milly Alcock as Spider Gwen? Superb vision!💯
Well Gwen is getting a movie but animated. As much as I want her live action. She’s still good as cartoon form like in Marvel Rising & her appearing in Ultimate Spider-Man S3.
So cool to see Spider Verse do so well
Saw it twice this weekend in New Zealand - so good
Across the Spider-Verse is an experience.
A adult animation Transformers movie would go absolutely insane
Hell yeah!
Yay!!! GO spider-verse!! 2 movies with people of color made over 100 million in 2 weeks !!! Let's Go!!! 💃🏾
Yes one is flop and one is hits
@@hopegaming5710 Yep spider verse is a flop.

Why are u people so obsessed with color🤦♂️my god this generation has no personality outside of being black or a woman

I saw that people like The Critical Drinker also liked Across The Spider-Verse. So it shows that this film has a broad appeal.
Those channels are questionable.
@@CVal012 That’s my point. TCD usually don’t like newer Marvel movies. But he liked this one.
@Bishop Brown Also, he isn't keen on "messaging" in movies which Grace seems to be suggesting this film needed.
@Bishop Brown Interesingly enough, the FF movies and spinoffs are have been successful in being diverse without patronising (the main messaging of family has been there since the first film at the beginning).
Remember when the Aladdin actor said TLM wouldn't make a billion dollars and everyone got mad?
Pepperidge Farm Remembers.
Adult animation went mainstream with Anime, not Castlevania or Arcane.
Hey Grace! Marvel NEEDS to settle on an agreement with live action Miles just like they did for Peter. Then maybe tease some of his graffiti/mural art in upcoming stuff like iron heart, daredevil etc.
What they need is for Tobey Maguire Spiderman to return for Spiderman 4 movie I mean come on Sony there's money over here!
@@daviddennie4086 Agreed, although a 4th Raimi film in that style is the dream I can’t see it feeling like more than an add on unless they do some crazy legacy story like Logan.
If they're heading for _Young Avengers_ as people seem to think, then would Miles fit with that team?
Maybe it has nothing to do with politics and people just get behind good movies? Just a thought.
If you're seeing it opening weekend, how do you know it's good before it starts? People went to _Quantumania_ opening weekend expecting something great, and pffft.
Just happy Miles has caught on to mainstream. He is a household name now.
I wish Disney would create an animated movie featuring a Black prince as the main hero/character. Disney’s most popular prince to date has been Aladdin. Would love to see another Aladdin-like character, and I think that character should be a Black prince.
I'd like to see a live-action movie(s) of the Ethiopians defending themselves from the Italian invasion(s).
Lmao keep deluding yourselves, Little Mermaid is a huge flop and probably won't break even.
@@junior523 facts
@@junior523 Your opinion is meaningless "If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, did it make a sound?".
Americans made it clear when it opened 120 mil and despite huge competition dropped only 57%. Merch remains a top seller. Not only entertainment sites say this but all respectable outlets including conservatives like Fox news and Express UK. Centrist like Axios. Business sites like Yahoofinance and BusinessInsider.
All traditional review and scoring sites score it as a great film.
Right now the dominant narrative is; trolls demolished by black Ariel and the dominant news on every news outlet is "trolls failed to sink Mermaid; even IMDB for first time in its history, calls out trolls' failed review-bombing".
@@junior523 the movie may flop in cinemas but it certainly won't on streaming and in merchandising
It has messages. The commentary about miles very existence was meta and subtle.
I can see people skipping Spiderverse once word gets out that its not a complete movie
I think internationally that already happened with the mere OK reception.
Despite the quality, is not over-performing.
Fast X tried this too...I don't think it's smart business. You can put an ending on a movie, without ending the story.
I knew from early days of production that _Across The Spider-verse_ was part one of two. We've got several like that this year, so we'll see how they fare.
This is how ur supposed to do representation, not the insulting tokenism that Disney has been pushing. I am black btw
Im so happy that animated movies are doing so well!!
10:45 AM on a Sunday, all the seats almost sold out. Went alone since there’s were only single seats available.
Spiderverse was such a great movie!
Yes please to bringing back Andrew Garfield as Sony's solo Spider-Man! 😊
Looks like well written, audience focused writing wins again.
The overseas of the Little Mermaid actually picked up speed after it was initially thought to not have a lot of momentum and also retained a strong hold. So this week actually had more momentum overseas for The Little Mermaid than the previous.
With China doing badly? all Disney remake that reaches 1B all of them reach 100M in China alone,
Can u say that about Little Mermaid?
It’s almost like you don’t want the movie to perform well…anyway regardless of it reach a billion I’m glad more audience are embracing the film since it was actually good. Did you even see it?
@@greedyyawgoo5635 well the communist party has told people not to go see it, they want it pulled from theaters. Can you say that about other movies?
Lol
Read an article saying Mexico, Brazil and the U.K. are driving box office numbers. I was wondering if other countries had their release dates staggered?
My theater was super packed. Not seen this for many many years. It was great to see and be part off.
I fully agree with you on this 💯💯👏🏽👏🏽
Marvels needs to get these directors and writers for Secret Wars
Audiences enjoy movies without "messages," believe it or not, Grace, most people just want entertainment not to be preached to.
I wanted to see it today but all of our local theatres was booked. I was Lowkey shook
People who say that, probably just don't want to sit in the front two rows, which is what you sometimes had to do before reserved seating came to be.
I do not care for the MCU anymore. I want Spider-Man to be just Spider-Man.
Many people dont like it, but of course you cherry pick to only believe the good reviews. haha simp.
👏 💯
@@lalareal180 lol I got u all riled up! Stay mad dear.
I agree The Little Mermaid is going to be another Cars and Frozen in terms of Merchandise Selling
Well, maybe because it's a girls' movie, and they figured some of these others were boys' movies?
@Sandal_Thong
I could see that logic but they should have taken into account the loss of premium screens and the run time. Also, as Grace has noted, they didn’t do the film any favors with their initial marketing campaign. It was seriously lacking.
its unbelievable they still haven't gotten andrew back for the SSU after No Way Home.
37% Hispanic, that’s their cue right there, they better cast someone who is Latino
I am so happy for Miles it’s time his character get his time in the Sun! Let’s get it to a billion! He gonna be fine going up against June Movies!
So happy that Across the Spider-Verse is doing well. It's just really unfortunate that the Little Mermaid didn't, since it's SO good.
