Kinda blew everyone's mind they could do it for so cheap. Good live performances are hit and miss because a lot of them are recorded on cell phones which just don't have the sound range needed. Some of the TV spots aren't great either, especially some of the early days, because the sound producers simply didn't know how to balance the mikes properly. For later TV appearances they began bringing their own sound people with them. There *are* some excellent live performance videos. I've seen them live in concert and they are incredible. For live performances I recommend checking out their official Gold cover. It's just the five of them sitting at their mikes singing live, no production. Or their Evolution series. Great stuff! Also you might like to check out their Sing Off performances which were also recorded live. Look for the videos by mrduckbear11. His are the best and have the entire performance including the judges commentary (we Pentaholics enjoy seeing reaction to the judging too). They are not as 'tight' or 'polished' in the very beginning as they are now but they were still incredibly good and it will also give you some of their backstory. Avi’s bass just can’t be beat, in my opinion. It just has such warmth. I don’t know why, but I always think of his singing, his bass lines, as ‘intelligent’. There’s always some complexity to the way he complements a song. BTW, Avi studied opera in college.

I think you would love Avi Kaplan's original song "Change on the Rise". He is the original bass in Pentatonix and is in this video. He is a classically trained basso profundo. He loves folk music so most of his new music has that genre feel to it. Please check it out.

Let me say that while I don't know what happened with that very first one, all I can say is I'm really sorry because Pentaholics usually are not like that. As a long time Pentaholice I can tell you I love your reactions and can't wait to go on the journey with you and while I very seldom sub to a channel I did hit both like and subscribe and can't wait for the next one. Also, there are some very good videos of some of their live performances but there are also an awful lot of "fan-cam" (cell phone) videos that are very poor quality.
