The 1980 1st Conference was memorable for the introduction of the 3-point line and the mid-conference trade with Crispa/Walk Tall that sent Adornado to U/Tex which led to this. The handicap that is 1 import a time carried on for Toyota and Walk Tall, Great Taste dominated the 1st half of the elimination round with the import tandem of Jim Hearns and Lew Brown and the acquisition of Estoy Estrada. However, they regressed later and both Toyota and Walk Tall occupied the top spots as usual with Great Taste and U/Tex notching the last 2 semis slots. Toyota and Walk Tall continued pace beginning the semis at 2-0. Great Taste though continued their downfall, not winning a game in the semis. U/Tex however surged winning the last 4 games and got the 1st Finals slot thanks to the quotient system. Toyota and Walk Tall ending at a similar 4-2 engaged in a tight sudden-death match with Toyota winning I believe by just 2 points. Finals went an interesting trend, U/Tex winning Games 1 and 3, while Toyota winning 2 and 4. Game 4 though was controversial as Manotoc took out his starters with deficit still within reach, and coined the phrase 1 step backward 2 steps forward. Alas went to this historic game that Toyota just blew away, and the curse of 1980 plagued them with 2nd place finishes also in the 2nd (Invitational) and 3rd (All-Filipino) conferences.
1:25:50 - The song background was "Hold On To My Love" by Jimmy Ruffin (1980) was also used for the NBA on CBS coverage during the 1981 Playoffs and 1981 Finals.
Because of this song, yan talaga nadala sa "The Last 16 Seconds" ng PBA..
Glenn McDonald basketball career to won his championship from the NBA and the PBA: * 1976 - used to played for the Boston Celtics along with #17 John Havlicek (1940-2019), #18 Dave Cowens (1973 NBA MVP), #10 Jo Jo White (1946-2018) and #19 Don Nelson ("The Greatest Game Ever Played"). * 1980 - as import of the U-Tex Wranglers along with William "Bogs" Adornado, Fritz Gaston, Noblezada and others ("The Last 16 Seconds").
Glenn McDonald along with Byron'Snake'Jones led the Utex Wranglers to it's first ever championship in the PBA in the 2nd conference of the 1978 season.
Watched this when I was in High School..Tuwang tuwa ako nakahabol ang Utex, my second fav team after the Redmanizers....Utex was the first team to break the Crispa-Toyota championship stranglehold in the PBA in 1978.
16seconds left at the 4th quarter,, without jawo and fernandez,, toyota crumbled in the end,, that is why they need the ring generalship of jawo and the sticky defense and elegant shots of el presidente fernandez,, it is the most memorable exciting championship ganes if the pba,,,,,
This was when the game was played by real tough guys. No prima donnas, no softies, no harm no foul! The great Bogs Adornado, still deadly despite his injury from previous seasons! The great Don Ramon Fernandez bringing the ball from backcourt to frontcourt and assisting the late great Arnie Tuadles! The great Living Legend Sonny Jaworski hitting those three-pointers! The late great Lim Eng Beng foul-baiting to the max! The great Abe King and the great Francis Arnaiz! Nagpapakamatay sa bola mga players, absorbing elbows, knees, shoulders, feet (there was even a foul called on a headbutt!) Walang maseselan, lahat lumalaban!
@@kaspafischer tama yan, later it was used for the NBA games on CBS (U.S. TV network) during the 1981 Playoffs and the 1981 Finals between the Boston Celtics against the Houston Rockets. When played that song..
Glenn MacDonald was a championship caliber player. Having won rings with the Boston Celtics before, he brought his winning pedigree to U-Tex. On Toyota's side though it's loss affected coach and former player Fort Acuña so much that he took his own life before the 1981 season started.
Painful Last 16 secs for Toyota fans.
Despite the dominance of Crispa and Toyota during the early years of the PBA, teams like Utex, Yco Tanduay, Great Taste and even San Miguel have won PBA championships just shows you the parity and balance of PBA of the old unlike today's PBA which is dominated by 2 groups that has sister teams. How sad
...if I'm not mistaken, then Toyota coach Fort Acuna who retired after this series...would commit suicide shockingly soon after...So sad...God bless his soul.
Even if Utex made the 2 FT makakabalik pa sa kanila bola. Pwede din magmissed 1 or both FT.
wow..ang labo ng decision..look at the time 0:00 na bago pa maishoot ni Adornado yung bola. dapat hindi counted yon. Toyota pa rin dapat ang nagCHAMPION..
shooting foul pa nga dapat si Bogs against Abe King dun sa last 2 seconds sa regulation time eh... non-shooting foul ang tawag ng ref tapos eh no time left na daw... LOL... why did Bogs even foul King in that play??? medyo malabo pa ata ang mga diskarte ng mga players noon... hahaha
Tommy Manotoc is one of the best coach in PBA..He won all the teams he coached a championship..Specially Crispa..He is next to Tim Cone..Panalo na natalo pa, pinakamasakit na talo ng Toyota to.
Those were the days, no sister teams and an inferior although more identifiable, and definitely more memorable game for the common Filipino fan...You were depressed when your team lost during those days...a definitely bygone era...
As a Toyota fan, this is painful to watch. My instinct is to blame tuadles but now I think it's his teammates fault for not rushing to tuadles' aid so he wouldn't have to make such a long pass.
The time out cost them. It was only while watching this video that I realized it. Check the inbound after the deficit was cut to two, arnaiz cleanly received the inbound and everyone was still playing. Then the horn sounded nullifying the inbound. Had there been no time-out Utex would be forced to foul arnaiz, who was already making a bee line to half court and he was Toyota's best ft shooter at that time. But we can't change the past. Good game though. This was a classic, too bad it came at Toyota's expense.
U/Tex dont give up!! I miss you Pa 😢 kung nasaan ka man mahal na mahal kita Papa 😢🤍
Just glanced at the first 5 minutes of this gamr. Didn't know that there was no corner 3's in the PBA in the past. And it seems the other team had 2 imports while the other team only had 1? Was that really a rule? Not fair to the other team, if it was. Or was it just the team's option to only have 1? Imports also look taller, or maybe the PBA players were just a lot shorter.
Thanks for sharing this. I was only 10 yrs old when this game was played. Definitely a walk down memory lane.

IKR and also Aaron James played alongside "Pistol" Pete Maravich with the New Orleans (now Utah) Jazz in the '70s.

Ang ganda ng video at audio for an old pba game. I always love to watch my childhood idol. Don Ramon Fernandez. Thanks for uploading.

Considered by many,,, as the greatest game ever played!!!

Adornado was still deadly... but the effect of the injury was there..
he was playing so gracefully though.
He was declared MVP the following year
Classic game
Thanks for the video
The IE/QCC personnel
of U/Tex were there

Yv hi
I love the pop music back then during the PBA coverage it was looks like the old NBA on CBS.
ironic that they were playing "Hold on to my love" when Toyota blew that four point lead in the last 11 seconds... 😅

Toyota's Bruce "Sky" King - one of the best imports who played in the PBA, years ago...
Painful Last 16 secs for Toyota fans.

Right on. I mean, the PBA is a shell of what it once was. 😳
Jaworski, Abe King, Steve Watson...one of the first pinoy players that have foreign blood in them.
Don't forget Lim Eng Beng (Chinese) and Francis Arnaiz (Spanish?)
++$++
Freddie Webb
I’m amazed at the pronunciation of McDonald. It’s not like, how a typical Pinoy would say it.
Dick Ildefonso was the man on the ball during asian games and abc tourney in the 60s.
The legendary 16-second game!
I like also the sponsors such as Pepsi Kelvinator Refrigerator Carrier Aircon
Sarap balikan mga laro ni idol jawo
Memorable 16 seconds
...if I'm not mistaken, then Toyota coach Fort Acuna who retired after this series...would commit suicide shockingly soon after...So sad...God bless his soul.
And the Toyota squad, in an aftermath, started the 1981 season by wearing a black patch on their jerseys in his memory.
1:27:36 and the rest is HISTORY.....
1980 PBA Open Conference.
I was there at Araneta
Even if Utex made the 2 FT makakabalik pa sa kanila bola. Pwede din magmissed 1 or both FT.
Tapos iniwan pa all alone si Adornado dun sa last lay up shot nasaan yung bantay nya, hinabol but it was too late
2 out of 3 free throws pa ang rules nung time na Yan kayA nagdalawang isip silang mag foul.
Adornado.. my idol
adornado still deadly and his is the winning lay up

Sumalangit nawa.

too many turn over for toyota. Last 11 seconds in the 4th, the worst in bound I've seen in basketball.
1980 PBA!!

Pinaka masaklap na pagkatalo Ng Toyota. At pinakamagqnda nman na pagkapanqlo Ng U-TEX..
Mas larong kanto pala nuon. Sakit sa mata
But classic...
Iba talaga ang basketball noon! Philippine cagers played similar style with the Soviets back in the day.
Si DANNY FLORENCIO ang unang Skywalker ng PBA! R. I. P. DANNY. Si Gaston ang tapang maglaro!
nope, i think it was lim en beng the 1st skywalker.
IKR. The PBA is a shell of what it once was.
