    Interesting. I did all my mycology work in a still box initially. I was intimidated by the whole process. But I am not 98% successfully with no air box and no flow hood. It's all in your technique and cleanliness. I don't recommend for everyone but if you aren't a slow poke and you move quick and quiet you can be successful without all this headache. And a legit hood is rediculous for the price considering i have seen genius home made ones. If you have time and $$ for that great I suggest getting one or making one. If not just know you can be successful without it. ❤ happy mushrooming

    Use a alcohol lamp or lighter. The air flow should not blow out the flame. It should bend the flame at a 90 degree angle. That is the most common test for proper laminar air flow.

      yeah, I kinda felt like the torch was overkill but it was the first thing i saw. i wouldn't recommend using the torch either. you cant tell, but it actually put a hole in the filter when i lit it on the video. had to change out the filter. learned the hard way! lol. but yes, you are right. an alcohol lamp is my next purchase lol.

      If you have them problems your fan is too strong. You shouldn't get that much pressure. You have to match the fan to the filter

      Yeah, the most expensive part for me, I would say, would have to be the motor (fan) part. I'm pretty sure that more than i only spent $20 on the entire project. Most of the items I already had at home...

    Great DIY flow hood instructions. Do you have a link for the filter? Also what is the CFM of the fan and hole dimensions? Is it a 4” or 6” fan? Do you run the fan on Low, medium or high? Have you thought about a prefilter at the fan intake to prolong the HEPA filter life. They sell carbon filter socks separately that could be attached to the fan. Do you think this would improve efficiency and the longevity of the HEPA filter by pre-filtering larger particles first? Thanks for your answers.

    • @ptoking2594
      @ptoking2594  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey Rob, Thanks, always appreciate a compliment. The only link I could give you would be www.menards.com . I actually purchased that filter at the local Menards. I also purchased the tubs there as well. I wanted to make sure that the tubs they had in stock would match up with a good HEPA filter.
      As far as the CFM, I'm sorry. My grow tent didn't come with ANY information accept how to assemble the thing, lol. I looked closely at the unit itself and the only information i was able to obtain for you was the following info: Inline Duct Fan, Model: GDF-I-100, Voltage 120V, 60Hz, 87W. The intake and outtake circles/holes are 3.75" in diameter. And on the video, I did make a small mistake, the settings for this fan is actually a Variable Speed Knob. But to answer your question, I always run it on the Highest setting. Because the fan intake isn't blowing DIRECTLY at the filter, it doesn't blow out of the filter as fast as you might think. It's great for keeping out unwanted particles but it won't restyle your hair or blow your work around, lol.
      And as far as the filter before the intake fan... I like that Idea. My fan actually came with a filter but I believe its a charcoal filter, and it's quite large to try to fit on the box. I guess it could be mounted under the workbench and I can use the dryer vent ductwork to connect the filter to the fan since I have a lot of extra laying around. THAT is going to be 4" in diameter. It would make a nice looking and professional looking setup, although, one thing is, those HEPA filters that I installed in the air flow hood was actually pretty cheap and it lasts quite a long time. Plus it's a high quality filter.
      I guess it would depend on how much dust accumulates around where you will be putting your box. In a garage, I would DEFINATELY use your extra filter idea! lot's of sawdust. I'm in a tiny little room in the basement. I'm almost thinking an easy way might be to just rubber band a few coffee filters over the intake hole. But that's because I don't have a whole lot of dust, plus if your bins are clear, you can always see if there are larger than average particles in the box. I'll have to post a video of my little laboratory some time. Also, if you like this video and you ever want to subscribe, I'm putting up a lot more videos soon. New computer, lost all my old videos, spilled coffee. Anyway, I always get back to any questions. Hope This all Helped. If you have additional ?'s lmk. Thanks for your comments!

      MAKING MARIJUANA AND MUSHROOMS
      Hi again. I have the exact same totes as you do. Sorry to hear about the pc crash due to coffee but glad to hear you’ll be posting more. You can PM me on FB or by email on this profile as well so we can talk about TC in more detail. You can freely post anything we come up with. (Share the knowledge). I am looking at a different method of using a stand-alone HEPA filter machine that I have from Honeywell. Not sure it will work but will be trying over the next few days. In case my modification doesn’t work what are the dimensions of the HEPA filter and any specs you might have? Usually 4” fans come in 190 to 240 cfm. One of mine (Vivosun) has a variable speed control. I used to use it on the lowest setting and ran it for 30 minutes at 1 hour intervals. I now use Alexa and smart switches at 20 minute intervals 24/7. I also track temp and humidity levels with Inkbird products but am considering a change of manufacturer because of its limitation to connect reliably to Apple and Android devices. When they do a software update one or the other fails until the fix the bug that can take months.

      @@robsexton4181 wow, sounds pretty high tek! Very Nice! yeah, my fan also has a variable speed motor. I would like to get more into the high tek area, but my funding is limited to my production. Meaning that if I'm currently not showing too much advancement, My father is more reluctant to purchase more items. It's no problem getting the major necessities like spore syringes and bags of grain, but I'm now working on making my own grain bags from millet pellets that i strained from my mom's bags of bird seed. I got 15lbs on my first go using nothing but our kitchen colander and it was the exact perfect size for the millet seeds to fit through but nothing else. im in the process of the first step "soaking them for 24 hours in water". that part is up in about 1 hour, next i guess i just need to strain them to the right capacity and then jar them up and put them in the PC. I have a 22QT PC and it has the standard 5, 10, and 15 psi weights. I will be using the 15lb weight but i don't know exactly how long i should keep them in there.
      Also, The temp guage and all the switches you are using, are these being used inside your air flow hood or inside your grow tubs? silly question but I assume your grow tubs right? Do you have a trusted site that you use? or some store? I wouldn't mind at least checking these devices out. I just had A MAJOR FAIL at trying to grow the more difficult species such as PSILOCYBE AZURESCENS FROM OREGON, PSILOCYBE CYANESCENS- WAVY CAP, PANAEOLUS BISPORUS FROM WASHINGTON, AND PANAEOLUS CYANESCENS FROM HAWAII. I Can honestly say, I truly don't know what i'm doing here, lol. I was able to get one of those strains to colonize a bag of grain from NORTH SPORE, but after it colonized, I used a substrate 2P Cow manure comp, 1P coco, 1P vermiculite, 1P Straw. So I multipled this by 4 and followed through, yet it's only been 5 days, I just don't see it happening. All the grain spawn is GREEN and dusty.
      As for the HEPA filter, it's dimensions are 15"X13". The cutout that I did Measured out to 14.5" X 15.5". I made sure to make my cut-out section 1/4" smaller on all 4 sides so that there was no chance of the filter fitting through the hole.
      And about the millets again, i am about to put these in jars and Home Mycology channel calls for gypsum, so i'll put that in there, but I just want to make sure I do this correctly. Do you know much about preparing Millet for Inoculation?
      Sorry for rambling for so long... Oh and I use a Windows 10 OS and have a galaxy S20 phone so idk if those work for the devices you are talking about but I would think they would... lmk, Thanks!

I even tried inoculating Corn and prepared mine just like Home Mycology said to do. But He always says he is growing this or that NON hallucinogenic ones, so I never can tell if his substrate is actually for what he claims he is growing "Pink Oyster" or whatever is "edible". MAKING MARIJUANA AND MUSHROOMS I was thinking. If you were to use as a prefilter, charcoal filter it would reduce the cfm of the fan having to pull through the first filter and then push through the HEPA filter. A 4” fan, as I’ve seen online maxes out at 203 cfm at full power and this numbers are NOT with any filter attached. So to keep the air moving at a reasonable rate the pre-filter would have to be something like a carbon filter sock. Not heavy and easily allow airflow catching larger particles like hair or larger dust thus prolonging the HEPA filter and improving air purity. If adding hosing to the equation additional reduction in cfm numbers will occur. At one point it’s either a larger/stronger fan will be required or reduce the resistance to air flow. I’m going for the latter for now.

      though that would be a great test, I don't find it to be helpful only because there should never be a scenario where you would leave an open agar plate in the laminar flow hood. The main purpose is to quickly and cleanly inject your spores into whatever it is you are injecting them into. The purpose of the flow hood is strictly a tool for helping keep a clean environment while inoculating your substrate. Obviously if I were to leave the lid off for 20 minutes, more than likely the agar plate will spoil and get contaminants inside, rendering the agar useless. Good idea though

      It works great. I use it for MANY THINGS BESIDES JUST A CLEAN AIR BOX... I use it also for drying out my mushrooms and I also dry out all my pot leaves so that I can fit as many as possible and then store them in a sealed bag in the freezer for making keef and wax. It works the best in the center where the rack is (I have noticed). But this does have a high success rate for being a clean environment for sterilizing while inoculating. I keep the lid on when I'm not using it!

    • @ptoking2594
      @ptoking2594  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Basically you're gonna want to use a stronger fan if u can because it has 1) fill up the 1st chamber and then 2) it has to push it through the filter so that you still get some kind of air flow that you can feel. So a weak fan I doubt would help very much
