  • On this Aotearoa New Zealand history tour we are exploring the Catholic Mission at Rangiaowhia. Rangiaowhia was once the economic and agricultural centre of the Maori world. The district is described as a food bowl - producing and exporting wheat, maize and potatoes, trading with communities in Auckland Sydney and California set among peach trees.
It came to be a settlement that housed two churches, once of which is this site - the Catholic mission. The other being St. Paul’s Anglican Church that is still present up the road.
It is a sign of the settlement that was here before the battle of Õrākau, where the land that fed the Kingitanga movement, and supplied food to communities around the region, was attacked.
🔴 In this video series looking at the New Zealand Land Wars, we aim to present the places as they are . We understand that it is not possible to tell the many complex stories of a location with one video, rather we want to make these places available to be visited virtually.
🔴 This is one of the sites of the New Zealand Land Wars Waikato driving tour. For more information about this site, we have collected some resources which can be used to understand more context -
