Manchester United 1-2 Chelsea 1985-86

  • Manchester United began the 1985-86 campaign in style - they won their first ten league matches and were top of the First Division from the opening day up until New Year. But then, their form imploded and, by the time of this game, both Merseyside clubs had overtaken them. Ron Atkinson's tenure in the Old Trafford hotseat was drawing to a close. Peter Brackley is the commentator.

      Couldn't agree more! I went all over the country with Chelsea back in the 80's and it was always packed in our end. I hate all-seater stadiums there's no atmosphere. Bring back terracing. Nowadays football is too glitzy I prefer the old Shed (the middle) a few pints in The Swan or King's Head at the proper time of 3 o'clock on a saturday, not 8pm on a monday night .Bloody sky has ruined football!!!

    I hated playing Chelsea at OT in the 80's because we normally got beat. Strange how the reverse happened at the bridge. We normally got a win there. And the second half of this season wasn't good, lots of injuries and sparky Hughes knew he was off to Barcelona.

    5/09/1984 1-1 draw with Micky Thomas scoring the previous season is no myth about Chelsea charging into the Stretford End after final whistle - those fleeing that end did not do so due to "crowd congestion or police horses!" watched it from the scoreboard end and met the infiltrators afterwards. The looks on the faces of our aggressors in the seats behind us had to be seen to be believed!

      @r que Oh, so you're a fucking expert on stadium capacity's now.? Chelsea had the WHOLE end of the stadium, terrace and seats for the cup game in 87/88.. There were also 10,000 there for the 97/98 cup match when it was all-seater. We've had this before. You seem to know your stuff on certain subjects. Where you let yourself down is making comments about events and situations you weren't even present at. I don't deem to blather on about Spurs fans 'exploits' elsewhere whether they be real, embellished or imagined because 1. If it didn't also involve my club, then I wasn't present and 2, I don't give a rats arse about them unless it involves us too. I've given you gentle reminders before. Stick to what you know and you wont keep mugging yourself off.

    • @chelseacharger
      @chelseacharger 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @r que Chelsea had all the seats behind at the Scoreboard End of the stadium too. As it was a cup game, they were entitled to 25% of the stadiums entire seating capacity. So up to 7,000 above the terrace as well. There's a lot of downsizing of stand capacity's going on to try and lessen the amount filling them. So you're saying the whole Park Lane end only held 8,000 in total max? That's little more than the poxy current stand they built at the Shed End at SB. And that's all seated !! I don't think so. The Paxton was near enough identical so that would make 16,000 behind the goals on that basis. The West Stand at WHL looked a decent size but that was because it had double decker executive boxes. It actually only held 6,500. So we're up to 22,500. WHL could hold 48,000 back then so is the suggestion that 25,500 were therefore on the Worcester Ave side? I don't think so, again. Chelsea have filled the entire Park Lane a number of times from 1978 onwards. And the videos are out there to prove it. There were no Spurs in those seats as it would have been kicking off non-stop. In 87/88, we had so many there, it was almost a Hillsborough situation. The terrace was so packed, the crush barrier nearest the front of our pen was buckled over. Plod shat themselves when fans climbed the fence to escape. The cunts wouldn't open the corner pen (below that end of The Shelf) until half-time. It's also full for the League Cup replay in 90/91. Blimey, there's was even a big following there over the two days of the Makita Cup in 93/94.

    You're right about this occasion but we did fill the entire Scoreboard End, seats and terraces in the FA Cup in '88. Again when it was all seated in '98. Compare this away turnout for a midweek game compared to Spurs the same year and West Ham the following season (both weekend matches and on TH-cam). No contest.

      @r que I'm not interested in complexes (you seem to have a bad case of obsession with all things Chelsea) but facts. Fwiw Chelsea stormed into the Stretford End in 1984, similar to West Ham in The Shed a few weeks later. My post above is simply a reply, putting someone straight on the relative away followings of certain clubs. Don't get your panties in a bunch over it.

    • @chelseacharger
      @chelseacharger 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @r que Yes, All good, thanks and hope you are well too. I sincerely hope you're not judging away followings by the crowd noise of forty year old films? Don't worry, there are Chelsea there alright and why wouldn't there be? We'd brought probably the first big mob up from London to Old Trafford in 1977. It had been billed as a face off between two firms that had bans imposed. Mayhem on both Warwick and Chester Rds. Man City's top boy readily admitted Chelsea took their manor over, including the pubs in 83/84. After Dennis Howell. the Home Secretary imposed the away ban, matches were made 'all-ticket'. Here's us at Wolves in 76/77 There were no Chelsea fans officially there. Instead there was constant scrapping on the South Bank.

    Chelsea did indeed spend 7 seasons out of 9 in the second division between '75 and '84 but West Ham were also down there for three seasons in the early 80's. I think it should be remembered that they were challenging for the title in this season along with yourselves, Nott'm For and that lot down the East Lancs Rd. Not going to get into the silly argument about who had the best or most away fans, but what is without doubt is that Chelsea could turn out in force for certain away games when word spread, Man City, Middlesbrough, Wolves amongst others. Every season one or two games were chosen for a show of force, even a night match away in some cases, not easy even from London.

    yeh , the jocks could bring some numbers down when they wanted to in the 70's. Celtic , i've been told ,brought about 20k + when they played us in a Euro cup semi at Elland Road .Celtic where everywhere ,the ground , outside the ground . city centre ,pubs , u name it . Think people were a bit wary of the jocks in them days ,well Rangers and Celtic, as pissed up loons who were nutters

    Man United had an Away support second to none and have for decades, especially in the 70s/80s and if well you know it. That said only two teams from London brought better support to Old trafford in the 80s than Chelsea, that was West Ham who brought 6000 and Milwall who brought 15000, both fa cup matches granted. West ham were shit in the league and brought about 200 once (After the famous BBC ICF Documentary) But the poorest in general were Arsenal.

    have to agree with you there, man u support in 70`s was phenomenal even at london games. l followed the hammers thru 70`s,80`s and got disillussioned with the game mid 90`s. l remember the cup game in 85 at OT, chelsea had best away support in 80`s from london, the taking of the stretford end was a myth created by `headhunters` book by one of chelseas `finest`....l heard from mancs about G Rangers.(no shame there).. any truth in Everton late 60`s in stretford end?

    • @samolevski1119
      @samolevski1119 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I knew a G. Rangers fan in late 1970's who was there when a few 'gers fans were in the Stretford End with hatchets to chop down an Irish flag the mancs were flying - big bond between Celtic and Manure, which methinks helped lead to the real animosity between Chelsea and Utd fans from then up to present day

    No mate, you filled three quarters of the terrace at the scoreboard end. The seats above have always been Man United fans. That whole end held nearly 15000, Liverpool and Millwall had the whole end in cup games for instance . Chelsea had roughly 4500 fans here.So you know you wasn't there and that is a fact. So why make that comment.

    Nope, it never happened in any year mate.The Chelsea fans are in the away end, which is the Scoreboard end. No one has ever took the Stretford end, despite it being full of Kids and thats probably why. The only club to ever take Man United at OT, were Glasgow Rangers and that was in a friendly in the early 70s, when half of Scotland descended on OT.

    The scoreboard end held 5,000 away fans when full. The support never went right round into United road,there was always segregation. If the scoreboard end was full, then the United road corner would be put back a pen or two, like when Liverpool came and Newcastle came up from div 2

    Ive never heard of anyone in the Stretford end mate. really other than sunderland, who got battered early 80s, but was mainly a scalfers/kids end in my day. Chelsea turned up in the late 70s at about 2 pm and chased all the Dads and lads about. on the forecourt, but were soon rounded up as were leeds who did the same. Weve been battered all over the country, but have battered everyone else as well,Rangers had half the ground and they were all pissed up grown men at the time , so?
