It’s crazy how Dutch was barely in RDR1 and yet he was so goddamn memorable. In the lead up to RDR2’s release I was most excited for getting way more of him in particular.
I remember screaming when the 1st trailer of RDR2 dropped and Dutch showed up at the end lol because despite his short time in RDR1 I could easily see why John followed him and why others continued to. Even when he's dying he still has to have all eyes and ears on him because even in all his lying prothletizing he still says kernel of truths. I think thats the most heartbreaking thing about Dutch, he was right.

What I love about the two cliff scenes in RDR 1 and 2 is how people can interpret them in so many ways. You could see it as Dutch saying the same dialogue in both scenes because this is his last wirds that he’s rehearsed for years. Informing his performative and two-faced nature. In this interpretation, Dutch is never genuine with anyone, even his gang members, because he’s trying to feed his own ego and pride. He wants to die a ‘hero’s death’ and just says what he thinks is the best words for that moment, not because he’s genuinely introspective. You could also see it in the way that you interpretted in the video. He’s calling back to that moment because he’s up against a wall and is maybe regretting the decisions that led to Arthur’s death, the gangs disollution, and the carnage that followed afterwards. I interpret it as an eternal truth that Dutch learned long before either of the games. Dutch probably had ambitions when he was younger (possibly when he first met Hosea) of being a Robin Hood type hero, stealin from the rich and giving to the poor. But because of him facing failure time and time again with his gang, the constant losses of friends along the way, and the further entrapment that he feels within America with its bureacracy and greed and grip on his personhood; he has become nihilistic. I see the story of RDR2 of his final descent into total detachment from the cause he claims to fight for and his regard for the people around him. By the end of RDR2 he doesnt actually believe that he can rally the gang together in one final job to escape America, he just wants to cause noise. He just wants to rage against the society that made him a monster. Nothing else matters. He might tell himself that he’s doing justifiable things but he’s just lying to himself. And I think his character is the epitomy of “if you can lie to yourself, you can lie to anyone.” The thing I love is that any interpretation is valid because he’s such a complicated and well-written character and I love how you explore that in this video. Dutch’s personality reminds me of Walter White a bit, they’re both ambitious and reckless, yet always convinced that they have everything under control.
Kinda unrelated but I grew up in the middle of a desert in Colorado. Somehow both of these franchises captures the atmosphere and the vibes perfectly somehow. The American desert ironically being a flat empty place has more soul than most places on earth in my opinion and it's hard to explain why.
Growing up in New Mexico, especially while Breaking Bad was being filmed, was awesome. Yeah, we got a lot of the "so many drugs there" talk, but I was in awe of just how well Vince Gilligan captured the beauty of the desert and showed it off to the world. And it only got better in Better Call Saul. I plan on living in the desert the rest of my life.
I think Dutch repeating the same line almost word for word in RDR1 speaks to his insincerity. He knows he's speaking his last words to a man he raised who clearly saw as his father, and all he cares to do is make some big speech reliving a time he felt smart. Nothing personal about the life he's lived, no reflecting on what he did to John, it's all about power and ego for him.
I think for the two scenes from BB/BCS and Rdr1 and Rdr2 you showed in the beginning, the scenes that take place further in the future show that Gus and Dutch have truly accepted their roles as villains, or perhaps, antagonists in some form, even if Gus isn't really trying to kill Walter during that first scene you showed.

i'm three minutes and twenty five seconds into this video right now, and as a rdr/bcs/bb fan all in equal measure, i can say confidently this is already the best video i've ever seen in my entire life
Better Call Saul being my favorite TV prequel (and on of my favorite shows in general) and RDR2 being my favorite game, this is such a great and unexpected crossover. You basically put words to the thoughts I've had about both of these :) Great video!
I also think these examples are mind blowing. Its like the creators had a vision into the future or a well crafted story that is already existing in the very first series/game
I love the epilogue in rdr2 since I never played the original and I got a feel for john building a life with his son and wife in a way I look back on fondly and enjoy.
You should seriously play the first one then. It's a little hard to get into at first, since the second one is superior graphically and mechanics wise. But playing it for the story is more than worth it. John is a straight badass in the first one, way more so than in 2. I wish R* would smarten up and remake it, so people would be more inclined to play it.
@@antthomas7916 same I was really excited when they were supposedly going to remake/remaster the 1st game cause I def would love to try it out and I've watched some gameplay of the 1st that I really enjoyed.
John the SOB gets tricked by Pinkerton's to go arrest or kill all his previous gang members in exchange for his wife and his son. Like a little dumb hoe he does that, and then the Pinkerton obviously murder the shit out of him. Does that's sound good to you ?
I still can't believe that John when out to hunt down the Mexican guy from his previous gang, the same guy who in rdr2 went out in the snowstorm to find his injured ass and bring him back to his hoe wife. John is the worst.
I never in my life thought I'd see a crossover analysis video of two of my favorite stories in modern media. Really well researched and I can tell you really love storytelling and have a lot of love for these characters!
Only after finishing BB, BCS and both RDRs I came back to my "Watch later" playlist and finally watched the video - and it didn't disappoint one bit. Thank you for this wonderful analysis and I fully agree with everything mentioned in it
The parallels between these two works have been in my mind for quite some time. And I agree that in their own right they are as close to perfect as they can get. What bums me out is the disconnection that I feel between the original and the prequel in both cases, although I have to say that in the case of BB and BCS they were able to resolve it intelligently through narrative devices such as ellipsis, despite some retcons being damn near unfixable. In the case of RDR1 and RDR2, however, the more I think of them as independent works instead of a continuous narrative, the better. It's not just that John doesn't mention Arthur 12 years later, it's that the whole premise of the first game, John ditching the gang after they left him for dead, it's not fleshed out as carefully as Jimmy's Transition into Saul. I think that RDR2 should have put more of a spotlight in John's disillussion with the gang, while also taking its time to make Arthur find it in him to forgive his friend. That hat transfer at the end would have been so much more powerful if John had been able to say sorry for leaving. Also, Javier in RDR2 is way too likeable (I can't hate on anyone who gets me to love "Cielito Lindo" more than I do), even in the end when he turns, but refuses to point his gun at Arthur and John; he is certainly not the trash human being that John finds in Mexico all those years later. Anyway, in comparison to everything they do right, these are just nit picks, and they don't hinder my enjoyment of these two beautifully crafted universes.
Beautiful video essay man. You nailed it. Now I’m jonesing to go replay red dead 1& especially 2. I rewatched BCS & BB twice this year so I’ll let that feeling simmer for a bit. We’re lucky to have experienced both of these works of art as it was released. With all the shit hurdled at us in modern times, we at the very least have art like this to make it all worthwhile.
Honestly one of the first upload notifications I've been genuinely exited about in so long. And the video, it has Great writing and great editing. Another 10/10 For Real Pixels.
RDR 2 and BCS are two of my favourite pieces of media of all time, glad to see someone praising these products not only individually, but in relation to their earlier products.
As someone who's watched both series, played both games and is into story telling and cinematography, this was enjoyable to watch from start to finish.
Arthur: I ain't blind! I know he brought the Pinkerton's to camp! I knew I couldn't lead them to us! I'm always checking my tail, as if I could ever make such a mistake. Never. Never! I just- just couldn't prove it. He - he covered his tracks, he got that idiot Detective Ross to lie for him. You think this is something? You reckon this is bad? This? This damn foolishness? He's done worse. That Blackwater job? Are you telling me the law just happens to appear like that? No! He orchestrated it! Micah! He shot up Strawberry! And I rescued him! I shouldn't have. I took him into my own gang. What was I thinking? He'll never change. He'll never change. Ever since he joined, always the same! Couldn't keep his hands out of the donation box. But not our Micah! Couldn't be precious Micah. Ratting us out! And he gets to be a gunslinger? What a sick joke. I should've stopped him when I had the chance. And you - you have to stop him. You-
Okay I’ve always thought that Red Dead 2 and BCS were both the perfect examples of prequels done right so I’m glad to see someone else share that sentiment!
Red Dead Redemption 2 losing goty is still one of the craziest things ever. GoW 2018 is an amazing game and one of the best in it's genre. But Red Dead Redemption 2 is THE greatest story game of all time
i had the pleasure of playing rdr2 for the first time this year with my friend lsd and a few months later got to finish up BCS. Both were incredible and arguably the best in their medium
I can't believe what you've said in this video, it is almost like someone was reading my mind. Every conversation I have about prequels (and I quickly go to the "perfect" prequel topic) I always use these two examples. Honestly to my friends it is not a secret that Better Call Saul is my favourite show and that Breaking Bad is all the way up there aswell. When it comes to games I think that it is also well known that Red Dead Redemption 2 is my favourite game; with BCS and RDR2 this video perfectly explains my vision and passion for these kinds stories. Thank you man! Your content is (to me) next level.
I've been put in a serendipitous spot when it came to these IPs. I am years late for the first installments then started with the ones that came later only to find out they're prequels and when I am starting on the mainline installments all the previous references mean more
It shows that the goal of a good prequel is to focus on keeping the viewers engaged by having them anticipate seeing events they have only ever heard about 2nd hand, even if they did not yet realize it. Red dead redemption commonly made references to past events and even though Breaking Bad didn't doesn't mean that those references couldn't be created retroactively, such as in these two cases in which there was no need to suspect that they held references to past events.
I would say that the best thing these prequels/sequels does is that they answered to great questions. Something some prequels fails completely to do. - What Mike and Jimmy did before they became criminals / How the Van der Linde gang was - How was Hector Salamanca before he became unable to speak and move/ How was Dutch before he became a lonely and despsperate gang. etc. But the real thing about Dutch speech being in RDR2 is interesting: it implies that Dutch prepared his final speech a long time ago and was always thinking about what he wanted to say before dying.
Yo was LITTERALLY just talking to my old roommate about this on the phone. Directly compared Red Dead 2 to Better Call Saul since I finished both at the same exact time
these are 2 completely different pieces of media that I would’ve never thought to compare until I realised they were both prequels. Amazing how they’re so similar yet different once your put them together. Great video.
Red Dead 2 does and has the amazing thing that many sequels and prequels simply can never replicate from the original, and something completely indescribable. The spark.
I thought this video was about how to make RDRIII be just as amazing by having Rockstar do for Dutch what Peter and Vince did for Saul, and show both the making of the monster (Dutch learning his trade from a mentor and then forming his own gang after he's left alone) interspersed with the full transformation (you get to play the events leading up to and including RDR1 from Dutch's POV).
I really love the work and effort of this creator, his ability to talk to me what my personal fealings are about these products are by far one of the best things I ever consumed in any tipe of media. Thanks for the genius work
I love both of these. Better Call Saul was so satisfying and I loved the long, slower pace of Read Dead 2...my favourite kind of game is where I can imerse myself and get lost for hours bot even playing missions and just exploring
I have nothing more to say than wonderful 👏, I always like to see people who know how to read between the lines of characters and their dialogues. Thank you for this wonderful work.
I’ve watch every video you’ve ever made and man talk about attention to detail and history, great outstanding work man, hope you and your family are all doing well. Happy holidays to everyone
RDR2 is such a good game man when Arthur dies I literally felt like one of my long time friends passed away. It still makes me feel emotional just thinking about. I cant think of any other piece of media that has made me feel so invested in a fictional world.
Rdr2 had a lot of consistency flaws. Rdr1 implied the gang broke up in 1906, when with rdr2 we know it happened in 1899. In rdr1 bill williamson is an evil sadistic monster gang leader, whereas in rdr2 he's a bumbling drunken idiot. In rdr1 John says he's never been to armadillo, but you're free to walk in there any time you want in rdr2. Also its heavily suggested the gang spent a lot of time in new Austin in general before they were forced to flee east, whereas in rdr1, John says he hasn't been to New Austin much.
@@mappingshaman5280 Where does it imply that? People change. Bill changed when Dutch was no longer in his life. Maybe John was lying about the Amardillo and New Austin thing.

Bruh, I can't believe I didn't realize that Dutch's speech on the cliff with Arthur was the same as his last speech on the cliff standoff with John!
Hmmmm so u suck ... Interesting
Am I dumb for thinking this was about a hypothetical prequel starring Dutch lol?
Turns out it's just a vid about 2 of my favourite things ever.
I thought it was gonna be that too 😂
This guy explains things so beautifully
5:30 that hit hard. i never thought of that before, it was eye opening.
i'm three minutes and twenty five seconds into this video right now, and as a rdr/bcs/bb fan all in equal measure, i can say confidently this is already the best video i've ever seen in my entire life
Better Call Saul being my favorite TV prequel (and on of my favorite shows in general) and RDR2 being my favorite game, this is such a great and unexpected crossover.
You basically put words to the thoughts I've had about both of these :)
Great video!
Every single one of your videos exude quality and attention to detail in all aspects. It's really inspiring to see how much effort you put into these.
Micuh... Put ya gun away Micuh... I'm not robbing a stage with ya right now Micuh...
@@AladdinBinLaden what is wrong with you?
Genuinely sad this video is over for me now. Could’ve watched a whole hour of this, at least. Gotta be my two favorite stories ever told
I never in my life thought I'd see a crossover analysis video of two of my favorite stories in modern media. Really well researched and I can tell you really love storytelling and have a lot of love for these characters!
You're gai
Anyway, in comparison to everything they do right, these are just nit picks, and they don't hinder my enjoyment of these two beautifully crafted universes.
it's always a treat to see you, Pixels, and the other aussie youtube titan Eyezayer post videos within a day or so of each otherr.
You added context to Dutch's death in a way i never thought of and it's such an amazing way to look at it.
Oh wow this is such an exciting combination of media. I'm so excited to watch this - my favourite game and one of my favourite tv shows
Ain't no way you just compared my two favorite pieces of fiction in one video, this is the greatest video of all time
Arthur: I ain't blind! You-
The GOAT of each medium, great vid
"I have got a goddamn plan Kim! We'll make it to Belize!"
Okay I’ve always thought that Red Dead 2 and BCS were both the perfect examples of prequels done right so I’m glad to see someone else share that sentiment!
Always seen some dope parallels between these 2 series tbh
Red Dead Redemption 2 losing goty is still one of the craziest things ever. GoW 2018 is an amazing game and one of the best in it's genre. But Red Dead Redemption 2 is THE greatest story game of all time
So glad I wasn’t alone in thinking these two masterful prequels should be compared
i had the pleasure of playing rdr2 for the first time this year with my friend lsd and a few months later got to finish up BCS.
This is the exact moment Dutch McGill becomes Chuck Morgan
Truly on of the videogames to grace the television!
Wow, I'm glad I'm not the only one that saw the parallels between BCS and RDR2 in how they're both perfect examples of how to do a prequel right
I've been put in a serendipitous spot when it came to these IPs.
Red dead redemption commonly made references to past events and even though Breaking Bad didn't doesn't mean that those references couldn't be created retroactively, such as in these two cases in which there was no need to suspect that they held references to past events.
my two biggest obsessions from the past few months and you made a video comparing them, I tip my cap to you!
I would say that the best thing these prequels/sequels does is that they answered to great questions. Something some prequels fails completely to do.
- What Mike and Jimmy did before they became criminals / How the Van der Linde gang was
- How was Hector Salamanca before he became unable to speak and move/ How was Dutch before he became a lonely and despsperate gang.
etc.
But the real thing about Dutch speech being in RDR2 is interesting: it implies that Dutch prepared his final speech a long time ago and was always thinking about what he wanted to say before dying.
no way both tv and game franchise i love in the same video? u made my day
Yo was LITTERALLY just talking to my old roommate about this on the phone.
The spark.
One of the best videos I've seen in a while!
Thanks for the genius work
a video on my favorite show of all time (BCS) and favorite game of all time (RDR2)?!! WHAT A WONDROUS DAY
Jesse! We need to stick to the plan! We gotta have some god damn faith Jesse!
My favorite line from Red Dead 2 was when Dutch said “Damn, I’m breaking bad, I better call Saul!”
Dutch: i watched Arthur die, i could've saved him but i didn't
Absolutely amazing, keep up the great work!
I love both of these. Better Call Saul was so satisfying and I loved the long, slower pace of Read Dead 2...my favourite kind of game is where I can imerse myself and get lost for hours bot even playing missions and just exploring
I loved when Dutch say "I'ts Dutching time" and he Dutched all over the place
I have nothing more to say than wonderful 👏, I always like to see people who know how to read between the lines of characters and their dialogues. Thank you for this wonderful work.
I’ve watch every video you’ve ever made and man talk about attention to detail and history, great outstanding work man, hope you and your family are all doing well. Happy holidays to everyone
I dont know if I should put this on my “movies & tv” playlist or my “gaming” playlist.. bravo
I’m glad I’m not the only one seeing the BCS - RDR2 parallels
My two favorite universes... Finally!
Playing both rdr games chronologically was a great choice. It really is a special pair of games.
You just made a video about the two pieces of entertainment that i love the most! You sir deserve a sub! Keep it up! Incredible video!
another great video from Real Pixels, one of my personal favorite youtubers
The fact that you compared Better Call Saul with Red Dead Redemption II is so cool. The best series and The best videogame. Nice video!
my two favorite pieces of media in one video, amazing
I hate that uploads are so few and far between. They're so good and your narration is elite. I look forward to the next video!
I was thinking these 2 different series are very similar. I'm glad someone else thought the same to make a video.
holy shit i love you for this. these two are my favorite pieces of media ever and i always thought it was funny they were both prequels
RDR2 is such a good game man when Arthur dies I literally felt like one of my long time friends passed away. It still makes me feel emotional just thinking about. I cant think of any other piece of media that has made me feel so invested in a fictional world.
Never expected to see a video about my favorite show and favorite game together! Thank you :)
What an interesting concept to compare RDR2 and BCS, both were fantastic, even though there were some flaws with RDR2's story.
Uh....what flaws? RDR2 was far superior to RDR1. And RDR2'S story is peak videogame writing and storytelling
What flaws? Lmao. Every story has flaws -- Rdr2 a lot less than most.
If you pointed out that rdr2 had flaws then you should’ve mentioned bcs flaws too.
Reminds me of my literature teacher, looking for patterns in the white noise.
You earned my sub, your videos are handcrafted and made brilliantly
