CROSSING THE ÉCRINS AND THE QUEYRAS

August 18, 2023. Along with three friends-Jean-Luc, Pascal, and David-we set out to attempt crossing the Massif des Écrins. Initially, a 1 hour 45 minutes hike takes us to a pass located between Le Piolit and Col de Chorges. This ideal launch site enables us to catch the first thermal currents relatively early in the morning (around 10 AM).
On that day, we expected cloud bases at +4000 meters and moderate wind, shifting from SE in the morning to SW in the afternoon. Ideal conditions that only occur a few times a year over the Écrins.
The day resulted in a magnificent flight that not only facilitated a south-to-north crossing of the Écrins, but also allowed us to continue with a north-to-south crossing of the Queyras. A big thanks to Jean-Luc for his invaluable advice.
I dedicate this flight and the accompanying video as a tribute to David, who tragically left us two days later in a paragliding accident.
