Virtual Riot stealing the fire that Skrillex found is a cool way to think about it! Great album overall, though I wish the storytelling elements were more refined. But his variety with genres I really do like.
The concept of the album is the stolen fire, he used elements from all kinds of different songs, movies, quotes and stuff, which makes it cohesive bc of that. He also included tribal elements very often throughout the album. I also reacted to the LP live on stream on my channel and Virtual Riot was in my chat. He gave some nice insight on all the songs and also said why he didn’t do the seemingless transitions and stuff. :)
56:39 I gotta be that guy here lol Nights on Fire is an oldddddddd Virtual Riot dnb song from way back in 2011. This song is basically a 2024 reimagination of that old song, and if you listen to both you can hear the same melodies and such in the new one the original had.
I really get your criticism regarding the coherence, but personally I can overlook that easily, because all of those tracks are just so well produced, so fun, and so creative.
New Energy was a song I played over and over on the RiotVirtual SoundCloud account. I'm glad it's finally out on his album. Ridiculous was a nice surprise, fun track!
Honestly Scorched Earth is by far my fav song of them all atm, i mean, imo he managed to transition between the different drops & styles quite seemlessly, and since im a german, i always have to laugh at the german vocal samples so that kinda adds to the humour aspect of it ig haha
This album reminds me alot of Mr.Bill's Mechanomorphic, but improved. I really enjoyed most of the tracks on this album. Favorites were Reconnect, Holding Onto Smoke, Ridiculous, and Scorched Earth.
The production is amazing and what you would expect from Virtual Riot I cant deny for me at least some tracks really dont resonate with me but the ones that do which are the majority are great songs favourites have to be stealing fire Star destroyer and Reconnect
It is a concept album, just not a narrative one. This feels like Virtual Riot’s self-examination album. He’s wearing his influences on his sleeve, exploring the limits of his sound, and revisiting concepts from all throughout his past in his current context. I feel like if you re-listen with that in mind you’ll get a bit more out of it. Listening to it for what it is now that you know what it is, instead of measuring it against expectations for where you think it’s supposed to be going, and being thrown when it goes somewhere else. Not to say that I think a re-listen will fix every issue you have with the album, but I feel like a significant enough portion of the gripes you express here boil down to ‘This doesn’t connect with the rest of the album in the way I expected.’ Valid for a first listen, but context allows for the full experience. You’ll pick up more of the references too.
You pretty much described every problem I had with the album on first listen. I'll relisten to it at some point obviously but man that first listen was kinda rough imo
I love how this album just separates itself from the usual heavy dubstep that he always releases, more experimental and because of that, more colourful and flavourful. I love these new takes on his music and it really amazed me esp since now I don't listen to dubstep anymore. As an album it however it really is not cohesive at all, it's more of just a compilation of the new directions he's taking his music in rather than a storyline that is conveyed through the music which some ppl like and some don't like (personally I prefer an album with a cohesive story but as individual tracks these are on another level). But if we overlooked to lack of cohesiveness in this album, it truly is an amazing listening experience.
@@waterbottlethatalsolikesme1670 and maybe even Dinos in current day somehow with VROOM not really making sense in that context so maybe they time traveled haha
1:27:05 Exact my thoughts. The songwriting is what is putting me off. So many cool ideas but randomly put here and there in the track. So for me it's not just the album as a whole but more so the tracks themself. Holding on to smoke tho is a pretty good closer.
Decided to discover and react to this album with you through your video :)
I must say that at the second I saw your face at 1:23:20 I immediately knew we had the same opinion on this album, and to sum it up in one word : disappointing. I feel like this album, well... wasn't meant to be an album ; the tracks are so different from each others with no real cohesion or apparent links... and I'm sorry to say things with a bit of trashtalk here but I feel like VR just tried to flex more than anything, like he's genuinely so good at producing music it seemed enough to just drops a few unfinished tracks with some others and combine them and say "Hey I made 16 bangers and dropped them together on an album" while as you said, yep some songs individualy are quite nice but overall as a whole project it's so meeeehh... I think I'm mainly dissapointed tho because I expected this album to be a "Simulation V2" and it's really not that at all, his previous album was genuinely so great I only wanted more of it and blindly though this would be it !! And so you might have guessed it but I'd rather go back to "Simulation" than this indeed and I also think in terms of popularity within the community this won't beat Simulation at all too. So far after this first listen, the songs I enjoyed the most are "Embark" and "Nights On Fire 2024", but my favourite is probably 'Reconnect" and I wish I'd avoided that pun but to me it's because this is the one song on the entire album that reconnects (lol) the best with the VR I know and love ;) And to anyone wondering about it I just don't liked the album, but I didn't said it's absolutely BAD or anything like this. If you loved it, good for you, enjoy
and btw I just saw you VR in the comment so if you see this just in case, keep it up you're truly goated. This time it just wasn't the good one for me... happens I guess :')
I feel the same about a lot of the tracks here. I'm a die hard VR fan but this wasn't my favorite work of his. Sound design always on point tho. Its the one thing that has always made me truly appreciate him as an artist. Even in songs im not crazy of structurally, the fun sounds still make me enjoy them somewhat.
I'm honestly really disappointed in the album. It feels like VR is prioritizing music for live shows over an album experience, which is fine, but something I'm still sad about. It really shows with all the crazy genre switches, in a live setting, that's super exciting and dynamic, in the context of an album, or even an individual song, it's just messy. I felt this with Simulation too and desperately hoped he'd move away from it this time, but alas. Give Into You, New Energy, Nights on Fire and Holding On To Smoke are my favourites, everything else I don't really care for. I care for *PARTS* of a lot of the tracks, there's sections in each that I really love, but they jump around so much, there's so few tracks I enjoy all the way through. Give me a coherent song, please :(
As much as I hate to say it... This album really dissapointed me. For me it just doesn't deliver on Virtual Riot's heavy or melodic prowess for most of the tracklisting. Even my fav track in Ridiculous doesn't have any punch in the low to low mids, or the bad sidechaining on the second drop, the IG version actually sounded more professional. I really hope this overall mixing and mastering issue on the album gets fixed like it did with Skrillex - Quest For Fire last year.
i don’t agree w ur other takes but idk if u heard the original version of ridiculous that was the first whole drop was posted on patreon and it was mixed completely different. i do agree that it was weirdly mixed on this version for some reason and hopefully fixed
The closed-mindedness & passive energy you gave through pretty much the entire listen didn't seem very fair & really disappointed me. I feel like you didn't even try to see the bigger picture at all. If it all sounds good in a vacuum, why can't it just be good? Really weird take IMO...
I just wish the first drop lived up more to the long and hype build. The drop ended up sounding a bit empty and small. That's the only part I didn't like about this album
😂This bro hasn't listened to either Skrillex or Virtual Riot's discography. This album is a gem that honors the way both artists make music. Either that, or this guy doesn't understand Virtual Riot's artistic sense. Well... long live Virtual Riot and bless Skrillex.😊

Literally. The end of reconnect is Skrillex-with you friends. Then has a bunch of skrillex samples spread throughout lol
@@L3ViTAT3 Yeah exactly. It was really cool to hear those Skrillex samples in a new way.

Btw the Nights On Fire is titled 2024 because is a remake of his track Nights On Fire from 2013
