  • Heyo ! In this TAS, I complete 5-1 Ultra Jumpless !
    So my tech has improved so much I don't even need to speed up these vids anymore lmao
    So in this video, I already explained in other videos the tech Im using, and I just find other creative ways to use it.
    In this level, we also get vines, which is fun, but since we can't jump off of them, we can only drop down. Unfortunately, that resets our speed to zero, so you can't go really far with them. Still, I can use them to help get past this section.
    Next, there is a rolling wheel, and there is a very nice strat to advance with 4 players, so I do that while dodging the spiky balls.
    And then, for the last part, I found that a player could stand in between two pirahna plants and just chill there, so that's funny.

    honestly insane that this game so far is even close to possible like this
    although i do worry about the squad's health, it is definitely not healthy to have someone bounce off your head, let alone the amount it happens in this challenge

    I love how you're keeping the amount of lives they have and waiting to refresh them to 90+ almost as a way of showing the progress in this challenge. And also the number of bodies sacrificed to make this possible.

    tbh, it's kind of a shame that there's an infinite height exploit with the mini mushroom cause there probably could have been some really interesting uses of the mini mushroom that didn't break this challenge.

    The most part that got me intense was at 2:30 the rotating wheel, it was amazing how all 4 was alive still until the end of the rotating wheel, that was truly amazing

    When you get to the final level, you should put the entire tas in one video. I'd say speed up how fast the other levels are done in it to get a tas speedrun jumpless, but I'd assume that'd require a lot of work. Up to you.

      Actually, probably not. World 3 cannon was the same issue than world 1 cannon (no way to stack 2 players). So if world 5 was not doable, i think that we would have to get to world 4 cannon

    Sorry if I missed a previous description, but I'm guessing you figured out the bubble manipulation that was an early problem? Certainly seems like you're not having to wait for them much here

      If you look closely, you can see signs of basic bubble manipulation - the screen is being scrolled as far left as possible when the bubbles spawn so that they don't need to travel as much. There's probably a bit of trial and error to get something that goes in the right direction quickly too, of course.

      Looks like they were deliberately moving the camera left every now and then so that the bubbles would spawn closer to whichever character was in the front (since they appear at the right edge of the screen, under most circumstances). This level also seemed to have a decent amount of spots where characters could control their elevation freely, such as with the vines, which probably helped - less need to wait for the bubble to drift to the right height. Maybe they've also figured out how to use RNG manipulation to influence bubble spawns / movement, but if so I can't tell.

      Yeah it looks to me less like the bubble movement or rng manipulation is happening and more that adeal has gotten better at manipulating the timing of the deaths and the position of the camera to get bubbles to initially show up in a favorable position

      I don't think so, if none of the characters move around on it it'll always end up in some motionless resting state. Sure, you can have the characters bouncing between platforms indefinitely and it'll keep moving, but that doesn't make it a perpetual motion machine. The source of perpetual motion here would be the Mario brothers and the Toads, not the wheel. Otherwise we could say something like a simple cardboard box is a perpetual motion machine, since Mario can carry it back and forth for all eternity - like, sure, the wheel can keep moving perpetually, but that's only because the characters are moving it around themselves.

      @@floralQuaFloral You're technically right that it's not perpetual motion right now, because the players do provide their own energy to move sideways. Still, the system seems to be doing way more work than the amount of energy that they're putting in. I don't think it should be possible in reality for them to keep raising other players to the top while only ever using energy to move sideways and downwards...

      @@MrCheeze Ah, I see what you mean now! Right, right, since when there are two characters on separate platforms to the right of the pivot point, and a stack of two on one platform to the left, it's able to lift the two left players using just the weight of the two right players. I guess that comes down to how bouncing on a character's head doesn't seem to impart any downwards force on that character. So what's really happening is that characters become effectively weightless when they're bouncing - that's where energy is being added to the system here, through the characters swapping between being heavy (when they're standing) and massless (when they're bouncing) at different positions on the wheel. It's equivalent to if you had a crane claw thing attached to the ceiling, picking up weights off one side of the wheel and then setting them back down on the other. Very neat!

      Right now it seems like Adeal is focusing on any%, so just trying to see if it's possible to beat the game under these conditions. They were able to access the secret cannon in World 2, which sends the player straight to World 5, so completing Worlds 3 & 4 may not be necessary. I don't know whether they intend to go back and check out the unnecessary levels at some point or not though 🤷‍♀️ And of course there is still the possibility that they will somehow end up being necessary.

    My opinion.
    The cannon you reached in World 2 skipped half the challenge, and we've missed out on all of those levels. This jump from World 2-World 5 still technically follows the no-jump rule, but it's just too many skipped levels if you ask me. How about we ban world jumps from the challenge as well?

      For now, I am trying to see if it's possible to beat the game at all with these restrictions. Think of it like doing an any% playthrough, and then going back to beat the levels you skipped. I will eventually go through these levels, but for now I am focusing on finding an optimal route.
      In fact, I already now that going through w3 and w4 to get to w5 isn't happening because of 4-Tower, so I'm continuing this path.

      To elaborate on @@daffy93's (correct) answer, the reason for the distinction is that very shortly after the Mini Mushroom became available, Adeal discovered a trick that could be used with it to make two characters gain infinite height. This would likely have trivialized a lot of levels if it was allowed by letting the characters fly over every obstacle, which isn't very interesting. It also isn't tied to a single input that could be reasonably banned, so the solution was just to ban the Mini Mushroom itself.
