Uh.... For the Bay Bridge which links San Francisco to the East Bay, I think the stock footage is all wrong. The footage shows the western span of the bridge. The Bay Bridge is actually two bridges: The western span which is a suspension bridge that runs from San Francisco to an island in the middle of the bay (Yerba Buena Island). The other "bridge" is the eastern span which runs from Yerba Buena island to Oakland. The eastern span was a cantilever bridge. That's the portion of the bridge that suffered the roadway collapse in the 1989 earthquake (which occurred during the world series baseball game between the San Francisco Giants and the Oakland Athletics). The stock footage in this video is of the suspension portion of the bridge. The part that was replaced by the "Engineering Marvel" was the cantilevered eastern span.

The i-90 floating bridge in washington just south of the sr-520 bridge is way more impressing. 4 lanes eachway and now a light rail nearing completion in-between the eat/wastbound bridges that connected the 2 sides. I drive both every week depending on traffic and the i-90 floating bridge is cooler to me.

Was this able to be done in 1873? i.e. the International Railway Bridge in Buffalo NY? Niagara River current there is between 7-11 mph constant. This was prior to the installation of the ice boom. Also levels of River vary w the wind off of Lake Erie, this increases flow & there pressure exponentially. How were caissons sunk in 10 mph current, in 1870's? I am currently researching this, help & insight welcomed & most appreciated 🙏💯.
