Dual

  • This series is about getting creative within the confinement of the 7U case with black and gold modules which are available in retail. The goal is to build something like the original Shared System B&G where the collection and order of modules deliver a logical and intuitive synthesizer ecosystem.
    The heart and soul of the original Shared is the DPO, which is a dual complex VCO, inspired by the Buchla 259 from the '70's. There's 'two five nine was here' printed on the circuitboard. While the DPO is still available, it's only available in silver, and it may not be restocked in the EU because it has a vactrol to strike the wavefolder. Without speculating too much, DPO will either leave the stage, or return as a 'green' revision borrowing a DXG strike. Who knows.
    Even though I love Spectraphon, which also has a '259 inspired' design, it doesn't sound like an analog DPO. It doesn't have the raw sound of fresh timber. I've been experimenting with dual XPO's for a while now (there's a link to my XPO vs DPO video) and I've 'discovered' that adding a moddemix as a bus really approximates it, but can also go beyond any complex VCO I've heard. The output count is outrageous, and having the 'FM/MOD bus' on the outside brings you very close to a Serge design. It takes a bit more patching, but it also delivers tons of fun.
    I am aware this series is a bit like a buying guide mixed with a MakeNoise ad but I am not affiliated with MakeNoise except that I am a groupie. I make fan films. We all have our favorites and MN was my entry into modular. I am totally biased. But these layouts also work with other brands and they're shared for inspiration. It's not the brand, not the modules, it's the roles, order and interaction of modules that turn a patch blanket into an ecoystem.

    Just when I think that I have a goal for my next purchase, you publish another amazing video that gets ideas floating in my mind and now I'm in doubt of what could be next 🤣. Thanks for the inspiration, and keep them coming!

      Thanks for sharing this. I think most important is making sure a purchase brings you closer to making the music you love most.. I can use the channel as an excuse for lots of gear I wouldn't buy otherwise. However, I can't imagine stopping at just one case either.

    The plethora of videos you have made utilizing complex oscillators is a direct reason I myself now have an obsession with them. I fell in love with the outlandish sounds they can produce. I just want to reciprocate a bit and suggest my current favorite complex oscillator, the Cubusynth Engine and its expander Exhaust. It is a fully featured 3340 based complex oscillator with a 'chaos' shift register put in the path between the 2 oscillators, which can create the most wonderful modulation. I think you should at least check it out, because I think you would REALLY like it.

      I am not sure if I should be thankful or worried, but thanks! I'll check it out!

    Almost bought an xpo yesterday. But went for a quantizer instead cause another vco isn’t necessary. Definitely high on my wish list so probably one day.

    This truly IS A DUAL PRIMARY OSCILLATOR!!!
    Both sides are the primary !
    No modulation side here

      Funny I did not make that connection in this video, where STO is 'just a helper' and a second XPO is dual primary...

    I totally get your aversion to using the “wrong” panel color. I was so happy when I finished the classic Shared System and had a solid row of silver on top and a solid row of black on the bottom. Not as nice as a pure B&G but I can live with it. Except now I need to break it apart and scavenge for pieces for some variant of an X system.

      Good to hear I am not alone here! I never understood why MakeNoise didn't go for panel replacement kits. They would have made a fortune.

    I so cannot deal with the sliding nuts anymore yet the panel color doesn't bother me it's all about functions and placement combos. AND NO one should ever question 2 MATHS next to each other it just works. I believe in a ratio of MATHS / case honestly at this point.
    ALSO this system might benefit from one less wogglebug and a SPORT Modulator instead. If you don't have at least one Sport Modulator folks your missing out.

      Thanks for sharing your personal thoughts and preferences, it may help others to find the perfect case and learn about new modules that may better suit one's needs. I've never even heard of the SPORT modulator and it looks very interesting. As for two Maths, sure it works, it comes even closer to the Buchla 281 Quad Function generator. But using two Maths in a 7U 104 takes 40 HP which means you have to make choices and leave something out that may also be missed.

      @@CinematicLaboratory very true about that in 2 limited rows it does take away a little opportunity away else where.
      You'll love the Sport Modulator in fact Topobrillo has always brought a little Buchla to eurorack.

      I got a pen magnet-a tip from a Lightbath video-which helps a lot with the sliding nuts, but it’s still incredibly frustrating. A fixed rail with knurlies makes it a snap to reconfigure a case even if you have to move every module to do it.

    Dear sir, what would you recommend to start learning modular synthesis today? Which software (cost friendly) and hardware? Thanks in advance for your kind response.

    • @CinematicLaboratory
      @CinematicLaboratory  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I would start with VCV rack (free) and see if you can get used to it. Start with a few modules (e.g. audible instruments == mutable instruments) from my Starterkit series (Maths = befaco rampage). Search youtube for 'starterkits eurorack' and work your way up. My own StarterKit series is also a good entry, but a lot more expensive to build.

    I think a switch module in between as well would be cool to send the RM signal so it stayed patched
    Like the actual 259 (or 261e now)

    • @CinematicLaboratory
      @CinematicLaboratory  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That's definitely a good idea! It would be cool to add a WMD sequential switch. It's big, but then you could sequence all kinds of complex paths :). I'll put it on my idea list.

      Sure. But I covered that many times on my channel. This particular video is about building a 259 configuration, so the 'point' is different. If you're new to this channel, here's a cool video using all stereo outs: th-cam.com/video/uWqiZA3wg8I/w-d-xo.htmlsi=xtsbQPrgs-dujTUn

      @@CinematicLaboratory Dude love your work! My comment came off bad in a second reading and that fact you replied with this and respect, wanted to say hey thanks for being patient with a nobody on your channel!. I think my intent still stands, in that what you did was awesome perhaps what should be followed up is with how could a configuration like this manipulate the stereo field. I thought you were going with the comment you made when comparing the XPO to the DPO in that the DPO was NOT stereo and you wondered about having a stereo DPO with two XPO's - or even dual DPO's as a comparison. Still awesome work, and much respect
