*EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS* 21:35: Establishing authority while maintaining approachability as a teacher. 30:14: Bringing formality and ritual to online school 34:49: Having a proactive and inquisitive mindset in literature classes, where students can make unique insights.
Loved this episode and the idea of developing a ritual for the first day of school for homeschooling. We will definitely be starting a tradition this year.
I wait for and watch every episode and I don't comment. I dwell, however, on what is said and it inspires my actions. This episode in particular prompted a note-to-self to sit down with my children before we start our classes and overview the upcoming year, instill excitement, and explain the reasons why our work together in these studies is important. I wasn't planning to do that prior to listening. I also will be adding some ceremonial element to our first day of class. Thank you for passing along wisdom. It's my first year teaching my children. Your people are my lighthouse, making my own path clear.
I'd love to see the opening ceremony and message (The charge), so I can play that for my homeschool children. My daughter is a student in MA online and my son is a full MP core student. We do an opening day at our non-MP co-op, but it'd be wonderful to see the big picture message communicated with a open ceremony I could show my kids. And I really appreciate Martin's co-conspirator in literature comment. Reading with my older children definitely has become a partnership. It's very enjoyable to learn more about them through our conversations about the literature we're reading together.
We actually make the HLS opening school ceremonies available over on the HLS TH-cam Channel! You can find the 2023 Opening School Ceremony here th-cam.com/video/qg63jZlUoRY/w-d-xo.html

"Happy to fail you", oh my goodness, I can't.😂.Also the rituals are so cool! My mom always takes our pictures and does a questionnaire with us.
