I love all the Kortana videos. She has it all. Knowledge, skill, aggressive when needed, knows when to back off and chill...but also has a sense of humor and doesn't take herself too seriously. Meaning she can admit when she gets beat and can tip her cap to her opponent, but is a gracious winner when she crushes her opponents.
Check out Greg's Automobiles and Airplanes. Fw 190 D9 and the EZ 42 Gyro Gunsight DCS, How to win with the Dora in DCS. He mainly does WWII airplane videos explaining the P-47's Turbo/supercharger systems and other very detailed videos on many other WWII planes.
Totally agree with Cortana's point about engagement scenario being the determining factor in warbird battles. If you are free to disengage in a 1 on 1 scenario then pace is king but if it is a situation where you must engage (an escort or point defence mission) then agility becomes critical. When there's more than 1 in each flight then the same thing applies to a certain extent but tactics, communication and teamwork will ultimately determine the outcome.
Great Video! Reminded me of what J. Johnson said in his book, speaking about his first engagement in a Spit V against FW190A: "They were faster, better armed, climbed better, dived better and had a better roll rate. All I could do was stand that Spit on a wingtip, pull as hard as I could, and hoped they ran out of ammunition". One on one, it's going to come down to who makes the worst mistake first. Multiple aircraft fight? different story. But then I've always believed that going around in tiny little circles is a very sill way to fight in a multi-aircraft. fight. Just asking for an unengaged opponent to drop on you and ruin your day fatally. In fact, I'd go so far as to say that boom and zoom fighterts, unless they mess up, should nearly always draw or win against turn fighters.
8:03 the "scars" on the Spitfire wing roots might just be where the skin artist accounted for the pilot and crew climbing onto the aircraft, damaging the paint.
Great video as always but those FW-190 Anton's took a-lot of punishment. Almost seemed unrealistic the amount of hits they could take. Also Kortana is an absolute master of survival on a crippled plane. She probably figures one of y'all will chase her to try to finish her off and she can get y'all to crash your planes. That woman never stops thinking tactically. Absolutely magnificent piloting!
A lot of Parisians had a bad day as well... Lots of smashed windows and household items from MG and cannon rounds, not to mention a few unlucky ones who had exploding warbird carcasses merge with their homes
The only thing that could possibly make this series any better would be a re-run with the same aircraft but Allied vs. Allied and Luftwaffe vs. Luftwaffe.
Could we model GMLRS, GMLRS-ER, and GLSDB, launched from a supersonic Su-27? Effect on range? Could you fire over S-400 if close and low enough to hit targets in the rear? Super fun and maybe not dumb.
Please one more time however include-- MB-339 Aermacchi, SU-25 Frogfoot, and A-10 Thunderbolt II! Plus previous OV-10 Bronco, Pucara, and Super Tucano VS Warbirds!🙏👍
It'd also be cool if you could have more of a variety of Warbirds/Mods, couple for instance-- F4U Corsair and A-1 Skyraider! Lol and on that note for the other side you could add The F-15E and MIG-27K!😆
Much better vid IMO, thank you for taking the F5 out of the equation, keeping the Jug cool isn't to horrible. The faster you go the cooler she pretty much stays, stay above 200mph and she does pretty well. put the intercooler to neutrual, and put the cowls to 1/3rd you can pretty much run the jug all day, Brillant vid though, you should be able to get 300 more hp out of the jug if you idle the turbo, on the deck
The first match up is a mirror of Hellcats and Corsairs vs Zeros match up in the Pacific except the Allies are now slower but better in a turn fight and the Axis have the faster plane.
I went looking for a hellcat fighting a Mustang and only found drag races. Why doesn't anyone do a radial vs. inline battle? I would love to see an FW-190 vs. a Corsair and a Spitfire fight a Zero. The SEO benefit would be huge, even if it doesn't sound fun.
Big fan of the Grim Reapers, but you did a huge disservice to the P-47 with this one. A few points: 1) the P-47 has a totally different engine than the Merlin on the P-51 and Spitfire. Your caution about burning out the engine in WEP is very good for a Merlin, but P-47's Double Wasp can handle much more abuse. The rule of thumb in flying it is put in Water Mode (WEP) at the start of the engagement and keep it there for 15 minutes. The Thunderbolt handles it just fine. Without WEP, the engine's producing 2000 hp at best. With WEP, you're doing 2600 HP+. That's a 30% increase in power. Given the point you made in the latest AMRAAM D3 video about the 20% increase in power for the F-15EX, think of what this does for the Thunderbolt. Try it yourself - put it in WEP (+ water) at SL, run it at 64" MP and see how long you can go. It's a very tough engine, and the P-47 NEEDS that power to compete down low against lighter fighters.
Where is the p38? I would absolutely love to see it take on some of these aircraft. Also it would be interesting to see this series ran again at altitude. Make the low level fighters come out of their comfort zone and give the high level fighters what they want. I know not all of the aircraft can get to 25k or 30k feet like some can but I think if you start pushing the boundaries of how high they can fly it would give some good data and make for some really challenging fights 👍
2) Birderino (?) had a terrible time flying. How did two Fw 190As end up on his six just 20 seconds after a neutral merge? Then he stalled and spun in well away from the fight on another engagement. On the other side, you had Kortana flying for the German side most of the time. I'd ask if you could refly this duel, but this time put the Thunderbolts in water boost right from the start of the merge and keep them there, and reverse the pilots each round. Having Kortana on the German side for most of the engagements (even if reversed for the last one) really gave the Thunderbolt an unfair impression.
hey cap, i saw this on reddit and thought it was a good idea: how would putting GMLRS missiles on mig 29s improve Ukraine's behind-enemy-lines strike abilities? might be worth a shot
Actually you can easy overheat the Dora. Cooling flaps needs to be open almost full to avoid overheating. Neighter auto nor MW50 prevent overheating on its own.
You guys should have some of the flights above 10 to 15,000 feet where most of the fight occurred in Western Europe. The jug will outperform anything above 20,000 feet and it’s a good match at above 10. you’re fighting all the fights in an area where the jug is at its worst and wasn’t designed to be. The FWs would lose every fight above 20k
If you do the 109 without MW 50 experiment, shouldn't there also be a FW190A with MW 50? Too bad its not a thing in DCS, allthough the anton with MW-50 predates allied plane versions we have :(
IMHO, DCS doesn't model the 12.7mm HMG properly. Historic Warbird gun camera footage demonstrates that the .50 BMG was more than capable of penetrating and destroying any fighter of the warbird era with a single burst. While not capable of the same per shell damage of a cannon, the .50 HMG was far superior to rifle caliber aircraft MG like the .303 and 8mm, but this difference doesn't seem to be well modeled in DCS.
So really it just depends on where you land the hits and how many you land. A lot of factors go into this, but a well aimed burst at an aircraft at the convergence range of the guns can be amazingly effective. I have left Anton's in a blazing pyre after a single short burst from the Mustang. The key is getting the aim just right and landing enough hits that the various types of rounds in the belt can perform their various effects.
I wish to see a P47 dogfight with an 18,000-foot floor. Fighting a P-47 just above the deck will never show the P-47's strengths. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE APPEASE!

Another pleasurable interlude spent with Cap, Kortana et al. Plus the bonus of knowing that there's another two episodes to come.
Thanks team. ❤😊
I love it when Kortana comes to play.

I think we all wish we had even a tiny amount of Kortana's skill , great vid
Kortana + Grim Reapers = Fabulous fun vids
Robin Olds Operation Bolo (Vietnam F-4 Phantom). “Bait tactic”

I am not sure it is fair to the guys, Kortana could fly a sparrow and stay alive or win. That's the reality here.😉🤩
I'm beginning to think that Kortana is either a Top Gun instructor, or a Red Flag instructor. The guys are just scrambling to catch up.
African or European Sparrow?
"She's double the weight; she's got so much lead in her." - best line in the video after your P-47 shot Kortana. LOL

Pure enjoyment. thank you all.
Climb rate > turn rate. If you have it, use it. Don't do loops, stay high. The hardest part is to not lose sight.

Love this blackpool map.
You need to also do high altitude dogfights.
We are planning to
Run for the boarder? Is there a Taco Bell there?
No but there’s an On The Border
The first match up is a mirror of Hellcats and Corsairs vs Zeros match up in the Pacific except the Allies are now slower but better in a turn fight and the Axis have the faster plane.
Please fly P-80 Shooting Stars intercept Ju-88's with FW-190 ANTON's, FW-190 DORA's, and BF-109 K-4's escorts!🙏👍
Perhaps over Paris! Lol protect The Eiffel Tower!!
Is the Me262 or Gloster Meteor modelled ? It would be interesting to see how the top pistons perfom against the first jets.
no not modelled in DCS
Kortana is OP :)
You should put the supports on the wings away from the Jug. Makes quite a difference...
Will you do this same test but at a high altitude so we can see the difference? Maybe with a min altitude boom boom trigger?
She's planning on it
For the sake of fun, I'd love to see these same scenarios but with the Corsair and the Hellcat vs. these German planes.
technical question: did WW2 pilots have that level of radio contact with each other?
Yes, certainly these aircraft at this stage of the war all had VHF transceivers. UK fighters had the TR-1143 US aircraft the similar SCR-522

That was some terrible p47 flying.....An Anton has no chance with a p47 on an equal merge. Literally none.
Caplet wanted to express an opinion.
What about a P38 Lightning against the Dora or the Fokker Wolf.
when the faster aircraft is extending climb at corner speed and mil power - build an E advantage and rest engine ;)
1) How is Pickles doing?
2) What is Kortana's cat's name and how is it doing?
These questions right here! This is the important stuff people want to know about!

May do some selective testing at higher altitudes after we finish the low altitude tests
What about a griffin engined spit?
Sadly we only have the LF Mk. IX with the Merlin 66 at the moment. I'd love it if they added a Mk. XIV
Dora has auto governor, spit has gald blimey governor.
Use the jug at it's preferred altitude, redo the fight and see what happens.
I love heavy jugs.
