Gordon Matthew Thomas Sumner CBE, known as Sting, is an English musician and actor. He was the frontman, songwriter, and bassist for the new wave band The Police from 1977 until their breakup in 1986. He launched a solo career in 1985 and has included elements of rock, jazz, reggae, classical, new-age, and worldbeat in his music.
If blood will flow when flesh and steel are one
Drying in the color of the evening sun
Tomorrow's rain will wash the stains away
But something in our minds will always stay
Perhaps this final act was meant
    To clinch a lifetime's argument
That nothing comes from violence and nothing ever could
For all those born beneath an angry star
Lest we forget how fragile we are
On and on the rain will fall
    Like tears from a star
On and on the rain will say
    How fragile we are
    How fragile we are
"Fragile" is a poignant song by British musician Sting, released in 1987 as part of his second solo album, "Nothing Like the Sun." This song beautifully encapsulates the fragility of human existence, both physically and emotionally, while also conveying a deep message about the futility of violence. Sting wrote it in the wake of the murder of Ben Linder. Ben Linder (1959-1987) was an upstanding and promising young man who was murdered by Contra rebels in Nicaragua.
The lyrics begin with a vivid image of blood flowing when flesh and steel become one, symbolizing the destructive force of violence and conflict. The mention of blood drying in the color of the evening sun evokes a sense of finality and sorrow. Sting suggests that even though tomorrow's rain may wash away the physical stains of violence, the psychological scars and memories will always remain.
The heart of the song lies in the realization that perhaps the culmination of human existence is meant to settle a lifelong debate - that violence and conflict yield nothing of lasting value. Sting implies that violence only begets more violence and suffering, and nothing truly positive can come from it.
The chorus emphasizes the vulnerability of humanity, especially those who are born into a world filled with anger and strife. "Lest we forget how fragile we are" serves as a reminder that we should always be mindful of our own vulnerability and that of others.
The recurring line "On and on the rain will fall, like tears from a star" paints a vivid picture of the continuous cycle of sorrow and suffering in the world. It underscores the idea that the world can be a harsh and unforgiving place, and the tears of the stars symbolize the collective pain and fragility of humanity.
In summary, "Fragile" by Sting is a thought-provoking and emotionally charged song that delves into the fragility of human existence, the enduring impact of violence, and the importance of empathy and understanding in a world filled with strife. It's a poignant reminder to recognize our own vulnerability and to strive for a more peaceful and compassionate world.
