  • The Onion Skin Journal is a beloved paper option for many fountain pen users. It offers a very different approach to ink-friendly paper. Onion skin paper isn't around much anymore, but its unique qualities make it a top choice for some. But I don't think it's for everyone. Watch this video to find out if the Onion Skin Journal is a good fit for you (and your fountain pens).

Not sure what paper is used in this journal but I can see that it is smooth finish so it could possibly be Fidelity 10lb onion skin from "The Paper Mill Store" True cockle finish 9lb onion skin which is extremely hard to find hasn't been made for almost 40 years. There is no comparison once you have felt real onion skin paper and used a fountain pen, water color, colored pencils, etc. on it. I have been in the printing industry for 35 years and have collected paper as a hobby and have safely preserved about 25K sheets of onion skin for future use.

I seem to remember onion skin paper was favored for international mail, too. One could blather for pages and pages without busting the budget.

Yes! I have heard that. I actually have some Air Mail paper that is similarly light and translucent.

Reminds me a lot of tracing paper, which is also amazing to play around with fountain pens on but takes forever for the ink to dry. It may even be what this is, who knows.

It's been a while since I've used tracing paper. They are definitely similar, but I'm guessing onion skin paper is more robust. I've never tried fountain pens with tracing paper. That would be fun!

Buy artist quality tracing or copy paper. A tenth of the price and side by side not any noticeable difference.

I have one of these and I've been intimidated about writing in it because it's such a premium notebook. (It was gifted to me). Watching your video I thought right away I could use mine to transcribe song lyrics! It really is too nice not to use! Thanks for the awesome video!

I enjoy using these notebooks in my Traveler's notebooks. Something completely different, though as you discovered, only one sided. But once you've filled up a notebook, and the pages have become extra crinkly! Oh my! Which orange ink was used in the sample writing? I expected it to be one of the Anderillium choices, but when I watched that video the orange appeared nowhere near as vibrant. Glad to have found the channel!

It was either Anderillium Viceroy Orange or Private Reserve Shoreline Gold. I can't remember, sorry! But those are the two orange inks I've tried in my Onion Skin Journal.

Definitely not for me, but very thorough and enjoyable review.

I was disappointed that its similar looking to the under £10 options with no elastic fastener mine opened and the paper got creased up first time i took it out to do pen and wash sketching. The price was way too much considering the quality was just not great. Watercolor and Acrylic are problematic, the paper is too shiny to paint on the watercolor flows off before drying and the acrylic peels off once dry. My fountain pen took ages to dry. Biggest waste of £50 ever.

I'm sorry to hear that. Onion Skin Journal definitely isn't for everyone. In fact, I am taking a break from mine because I wasn't enjoying it as much as I enjoy Rhodia and Tomoe River paper.

Update? How do you like it so far?

Good question. I actually stopped using it. It's really well made, and the paper is interesting, but most of my inks came out looking muted on the page, and the paper is so thin that when I go back to look at what I wrote, my writing is almost illegible because it blends in with the writing on the page underneath it. So it just wasn't very practical for my needs.

Rounded corners are best. Why are you doing reviews when you don’t even know the terminology of a simple book

Everyone has their own tastes. I like rounded corners a lot, but I also like square corners. As for terminology, my expertise comes from using notebooks for most of my life, not from knowing their anatomy.
