I don’t know that we get an explanation as to the mechanics of change but yes, it is confirmed that the dramatic glaciation of Coerthas was a result of the calamity. Similar to other areas of aetheric anomalies like Mor Dhona and the Burning Wall in Eastern Thanalan.
My guess is because it takes absolutely forever to get anywhere, with a lot of empty space in between, and because it'd be a strain on the system to have to load that whole map with multiple people doing stuff on it. That's just what I think though.
It’s incredible seeing coerthas without snow
thats CRAZY was the snow in arr caused by dalamud smashing into the planet?? theres no way it completely messed w the weather in coerthas right??

Yes. Coertha's elemental aether was tipped towards ice causing it to be locked in winter.
why is the current map no longer like that? I mean, its no longer a single open world map.

@@isetochelden original ffxiv ran on a different engine from a realm reborn, and it had a ton of performance issues.
Different design perspective.
it ran like shit, felt like shit to walk through, and generally was just huge expanses of nothing even if it looked good.
ps3 couldn't handle it.
