  • I swap out the Walbro OEM carb for an aftermarket HiPa carb. Compare the looks of them, install then tune the carb. Make a couple cuts with the HiPa carb installed on the ms390.

What tach did you use? I think most at least non professionals are just tuning carbs by ear. Sounds like this is more correct.

I can't recall the brand, sorry. Ear tuning can get you close, but a tach is better.

currently working on my great grandfather's 039, new to carb tuning and just getting to hear the ideal top end and low end of the idle a revs has given me much more confidence going foreword. Thank you for the helpful content and I hope you've been well.

Glad it was helpful. Good luck on your running. 039 is a nice saw

I’d recommend rebuilding the original carb

Great saws , i have two 039s and a ms390. You can remove the limiters from the original carb.

I had read that. I currently have an 18" bar on this saw for firewood production. This saw rips with that shorter bar on. It does OK with the 25", but man does it go with that 18". Thanks for stopping in!

Yeah, a 25 inch bar is to big for that saw.you could run it but should probably nit go bigger than 20". When I need anything bigger I get out the 044 or ms461.

@bryanmcgovern7858 I have a g660 and 372xp that I use longer bars on. That's why I switched the 390 down. I have a bucking table so that 18 inch is perfect size for that.

*I have one of the same model and have never changed the carburetor, once I changed the carburetor kit and it still works. Regards*

I had opened up the exhaust a bit to help it breath, that's the main reason for switching to a carb I could fully adjust for that. Stock one limits the amount you can adjust the carb. Thanks for watching
