I like how you work so many problems and take the time to go through each step...your examples are so similar to the ones my professor gives on quizzes and exams. Thanks for taking the time to make this super helpful video!
Does this show up on India's youtube or UK's or US'? Why did you choose US youtube region by chance? Just curious because I thought India is much closer with Britain.
@@ethanchen4504 In India, highschool students generally use these lectures for their competitive exams , for example am in 11th grade , and studying this to build my base. Then we have to study even more advanced things. Some common exams are JEE INPhO INChO RMO INMO NEET etc.
not sure if this is the case for all orgo classes but in mine we can also name "4-bromo-3-methoxy-2-pentanol" as "4-bromo-3-methoxypentan-2-ol" so that it's clear in the name where the hydroxyl group is located on the compound. fyi, both are right but my professor just prefers the second way!
This is my first time ever watchin an actual Organic Chemistry video from you, which means you've made me pass general chemistry 1st semester. Thank you @TheOrganicChemistryTutor
Thanks dude cleared my basics this is nothing compared to the ones we get in school tho also, you missed anisole and all the other compounds attached to benzene.
Frankly telling the video is amazing. Concept clarification is 100% granted ,,,, but I just want to raise a question,, like you wrote up 3-methyl-2-heptene it should be : 3-methylhept(2)ene
@@niketgupta112 I was studying when I posted this comment ☺️ I am not sure about his nationality but I used to think his name sounds Spanish but Idk. Maybe we can ask him 😁
You said alcohol takes precedence over an ether in naming... but how do you know? What if they give a question including other hydrocarbon derivatives with an ether... how do I know which one takes precedence over another in terms of order of naming???
What if you have subs on both sides of your ether? How do u name it? For example, I have on the left 1-ethyl -2 methyl propyl and the right side has 1,3 dimethyl propyl ...? What would be the correct name for it?
Here's my little explanation into how both naming systems function :) Common: Perceives the oxygen atom as isolated and any other parts of the molecule are substituents that are named before it (alphabetical order if alkyls or aryls). Uses the word 'ether', but not '-oxy' root. IUPAC: Perceives the oxygen atom to be a part of the shorter aryl group as a substituent, and the other aryl/alkyl group is the parent chain that is the basis of its name. Uses the root '-oxy', but not the word 'ether.'

Such a confusing topic. Thanks so much for simplifying it. Excellent video!
You always make great videos! Great work, keep it up. Kids like me are surviving orgo thanks to your help!

2nd one should be preferred cause the first one is not applicable when unsaturation comes.
It was what i was just asking myself rn !
The first one is old IUPAC naming system, on the other hand the second is written using the newer version (given by IUPAC) of naming system.
@@ljmicahlucas9688 I love your reasoning

It really depends on your instructor's preference... For some instructors, it is the other way around.
Both are correct

4 bromo 3 methoxy 2 hydroxyl pantane
Should be correct??
The OH group changes the suffix to -ol. When you have high priority group like OH groups you can’t name it as -ane

I have a doubt, in your first example u told it's methoxy ethane but to write it's methoxy ethane there isn't 6 hydrogens to tell it's ethane rght??
I thought we are to ignore the prefix, is cyclo not a prefix in this case?
#Thanks from an indian to you.
Thanks a lot 💝🙏🏻
Best one😊
Please why did you not indicate the position of the ethers on the cycloalkanes as they where on the second carbon (ortho) ?
At which point in the video?
Great vid
In the example with cyclohexane, if we change it to benzene then we call it benzene right?
What if both alkoxy groups have a branched structure? If the numbering starts from 0 twice, how can you keep apart the two number sequences?
What if you have subs on both sides of your ether? How do u name it? For example, I have on the left 1-ethyl -2 methyl propyl and the right side has 1,3 dimethyl propyl ...? What would be the correct name for it?

Anyone from India 🇮🇳🇮🇳
Brother what would be name of :-
C--C--O--C
Ethoxy methane
Methoxy ethane(I thought this one)
Methoxy ethane
What's the longest chain? It's ethane, so it should be methoxy ethane because the methyl group acts as a substituent.
For the iupac name don't we have to number the cyclo's am a little bit confused and why
i had a question on #5:50 minutes of the video shouldn't it be like 2-ethoxy isopropane ? im just confused
Remove the ethoxy group and name it, it would just be propane right? So there you go
U R amazing ♥️♥️
Thanks a lot ♥️
Bro what do you mean by priority of functional groups
Thank u so much...
I understand but I have a question if there is Ch3_O-CH2-Ch-(Ch3)-Ch3 what would be the iupac name of it plz tell me
1 methoxy 2 methyl propane
Idk why i laughed at this part 9:32

Anyone know how to do the common names for the two or three examples where he only did IUPAC names? 😊
Isn’t at 5:10 the common name ethylneopropyl ether?
thankss
