FYI, I had a hysterectomy about 9 months before being diagnosed. (I kept the ovaries). The surgeon failed to refer me to an oncologist after the hysterectomy. The cancer spread to upper top of vaginal wall. A year later I had to start treatment. It was 28 pelvic radiation sessions, 5 chemotherapies (Cisplatin), 5 brachytherapy sessions and lots of prayers and support! There are side effects I deal with, but I’m alive and well!

yes any radiation increases cancer risk, you either die from the tumor forming now or the tumor that may form 20 yrs later…
Wouldn't this be really risky since the pellet might even emit radiation to the surrounding cells, and even cause more cancer before the main tumour is removed?

My father is hearing some kind of noise inside his right ear,so we took a scan,the result
( Right ear: moderate to profound sloping sensorineural hearing loss form 500Hz to 8kHz (mixed component at 1kHz) with normal hearing at 250Hz
Left ear : hearing sensitivity within normal limits from 250Hz to 4kHz with mild hearing loss at 8kHz ) but he has no Diabetes.
And again I took M R I scan also
The result
(Considering the clinical history most likely diagnosis is an acoustic schwannoma of right side)

+fireclaw316 If they are close enough, they die. That's why it's important to have such precise radiation (hurt as few normal cells as possible). Interestingly, normal tissue seems to be able to repair itself more easily than cancer tissue.

Excruciating pain and massive scar tissue as a result of this procedure. They don't tell you that. I don't think I could go through it again. And pain meds did very little to help. Im still here but because of it I'm still living with the side effects that they didn't tell me would happen and my quality of life has forever been affected.

I would not recommend it caused major damage for me. My tumor was small and should have been lasered out. Do your research before any cancer treatment

It's because the dose of radiation is not so high as it looks like. It affects and destroy cells during mitosis, specially the phase G2, when the cell are more vulnerable. It makes some damage and the cell can not replicate anymore functionally and dies with time, not immediately. The thing is that normal tissue has cells multiplying in an organized manner, so the cells are always in the same phase, the cancer cells don't have this organization, and will always be a lot of them in phase G2 In every session of therapy. That's the reason radiotherapy usually uses lots os sessions with low dose radiation, to affect more tumoral cells in it's G2 phases.
I don't know if I explained well, it's hard to write this in English since I'm Brazilian and learned all of this in Portuguese.
