      Hi Mr. Carlson I am trying to fix my Eico model 460 scope and I’m trying to find a .25mfd 400vdc, .1mfd 1600vdc capacitors. Do you know where to find them?

      @@liamtheinventor1522 many places you can get capacitors. JustRadios, Radiodaze, ect. They might not have exactly what you need but you can combine 2 capacitors if you wanted exactly .25mfd............. .22mfd and .03mfd in parallel will do it.

    Thank you for being so kind to my foolish mistakes on this radio. It was my first radio restoration and I knew the alignment was off from the beginning but didn't want to tackle that so I put it away. I always mark where tubes come from now but I was naive back then. Most radios and schematics show a tube layout but try as I might I could not find one for this.

      Hi Fran, do you know what shadow banning is ? Some are treated like that for years on your channel, for no reason. I can see my reactions there, but no one else can, including you. I found out after two years.
      THIS reaction on Paul's channel is the closest I can get to tell you, unless I open another platform account (Twitter, Facebook), which I refuse.
      Maybe check your e-mail accounts, I wrote to one of them to tell you.

      Well, no reaction at al. It seems that there are corners build into TH-cam that just don't 'exist', but I still found one after being misled for two years. And Fran is in it; I can speak, but no sound is coming trough, I am only allowed to 'watch the Fran community', while there is clearly a text field that says: "Add a public comment...". But as soon as I watch Franlab trough another computer, all my comments there are gone. Weirdly misleading.

    Mr. Carlson's experience with tubes and tube equipment really shows. Not many people could look at the tubes and immediately know that they weren't in the right place and then know which ones to expect in the various stages of the radio.

    • @hestheMaster
      @hestheMaster 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I always go by a schematic to make sure stuff is where it should be. Here the components were replaced by substituting modern replacements but failed to
      note where the tubes went and bodged the radio up in a failed alignment. It also helps to take lots of photos before and after of the work while progressing
      with a shotgun job of component replacing especially around the tubes. Sure way to solder a part to the wrong place.

    • @pneumatic00
      @pneumatic00 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      There is a subtle, but very important lesson involved here. Imagine how long you could spend troubleshooting that radio with the tubes in the wrong sockets? What would you do, knowing that it had been worked on? Even if you didn't have the back-story, you would see those bright yellow caps underneath and know the set had been worked on. *Once you know that, you have to know there is literally NOTHING you can take for granted*--but again, does that mean you have to check every wire, every solder joint...? I myself have worked on plenty of AA5 radios (mostly the 7-pin tube versions and this was 30+ years ago) but still, there for sure was something odd about the audio out tube and rectifier right next to the tuning cap. I will admit, it didn't jump out at me right away. I *think* I would have tried to get a schematic online which would probably have the tube layout and etc; etc; etc

    • @hestheMaster
      @hestheMaster 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@pneumatic00 Never assume anything!
      Just because someone worked on a radio and you see new parts in the underside don't assume they replaced a part with the right replacement part. Go over every circuit in the schematic to make sure it is right, make sure parts are where they should be and wired correctly to tube sockets. I give you an example of something I found in a newly acquired radio from 1948. A resistor was going into a solder joint and I wiggled it. It was just loose going through the joint of solder !

    This takes me back to my days on the farm in the 1950's when I used to watch my father as he overhauled engines to make extra money from the neighbors. He taught me a lot about mechanics, and, of course how to farm. One thing he always drilled in about working with farm equipment was to insure that all the screws and bolts were tight before you began a days work. So, for example, if you were going to mow, you went over the mower with a wrench and screwdriver and tightened everything so it would not work loose as you mowed the fields. When I first began tinkering with radios in the early 1960's after we moved to town and got electric power, I transferred that learning and messed up the radios I worked on by doing the tighten the screws thing after opening up the cabinet. I quickly learned that this advice does not transfer to electronics. I guess it takes a few screw ups, especially if you are working, as I did with no advice from anyone in the know such as is available today with the many how to's available on TH-cam.

    RCA model 65X1 from 1948. Tube compliment : 50L6/35Z5/12SA7/12SK7/12SQ7 . From the label that was on the bottom,
    " For Finest Performance USE ONLY GENUINE RCA RADIO TUBES" I found Mr. Carlson's ability to find tubes put in wrong places fascinating and I hope whomever did that
    never turned the radio on! But that person did mis-tune the radio and screwed it up! Definitely needs an alignment. Work was only half way finished.
    It would make sense to put in a polarized plug, switch the "hot" side to the on/off switch, and add a fuse on the hot wire coming into the radio. Make it safe!

      I understand the sentiment but you have to remember the numbers involved. When tens or hundreds of thousands of people watch a video its an absolute certainty that a small but significant number of them will be one or more of: in a terrible mood, not very bright, clicked by accident, completely or partially misunderstanding something that is said, actually clinically mad etc etc. In short, when, as I write, the like:dislike ratio is around 200:1, there is no need to worry or even pay attention to the 1.

    My grandmother had the same exact radio. It lived in her kitchen. I certainly would like to see a full alignment. Too bad her's is long gone, with her. I remember listening to it in the morning to WOR in NYC back in the 1960s.

    Another great video Paul! I look forward to your videos along with Joe Smith’s videos( multimeter robustness testing mostly). You two guys have the best EE chops on TH-cam. You both design and build your own test equipment, can just look at the circuit and find the issue with little testing, reverse engineer circuits, you both are very good at mechanical work and engineering also. I was a mechanical engineer/toolmaker/CNC programmer most of my career but always had interest in electronics since I was a kid. Being a gigging guitar player for the past 40 years I dove back into that pool when all the good old techs I trusted started to retire and unfortunately pass away. A lot of books before the internet on the subject and these days videos from guys like you and Joe have gotten me to the point of being the guy in my area that most bring their tube amps to for repairs. The last few years I have gotten into old tube radios too. Just wanted to say thank you and others with amazing skills for sharing your knowledge. I’m also a subscriber to your Patreon channel and love the projects and the details of schematics and parts list. Keep the videos coming!!

    I remember an old saying my highschool electronics teacher once told me back in 1978. "A little bit of knowledge, can be more dangerous than no knowledge at all". This radio is a good example of that. Cheers from Winnipeg.

    Amazing channel. I normally watch at night when there is nothing new on TV (that means, every day). Some time ago you said you would do a "Bio" video. Love to hear about you gaining all this knowledge. Very impressive. From the oldest tube thingy to the newest SMD designs, you seem to know it all.
    Also, your lab is a treasure trove.
    Thank you for your sharing your videos/knowledge with us!

    I spotted it as soon as you took the cover off! "That looks like an oscillator tube in the middle of the IF stages". Having worked on dozens of AA5 style radios as you mentioned in the video most follow the same arrangement v A7/K7/Q7/ Output. :)

    I've just started watching this channel. Love it. I've fiddle with electronic off and on Most of my life from being a Microwave systems operator in the US signal Corps in the 1980s to a Network Engineer as a profession. Thankfully I managed to do it without working down to the component level. Never really was that interested in it until I saw Mr. Carlson here. He's very detailed I love that. So I'm going to ask a dumb question. Feel free to laugh. Is it possible to build a SW radio just for listening to the 40 meter band and to design it so all the components work to maximize signal quality and audio quality to make a perfect listening experience for ONLY that band? I mean absolute clarity. No noise from internal components. Everything perfectly designed to be a one trick pony of a radio.

      My radio. lab is nothing but vintage 1950’s and 60’s test equipment, except for my scope. The scope is an early 70’s Leader 50 Mhz model. I added peaking coils to the vertical amplifier to extend the overall scope response. For AM radio it does the job. In the 1950’s and 60’s all we had were 5 Mhz scopes.

    Yes, I would like to see you finish the job. I screw drivered one of these once and have fond memories of listening to this little table top set. I also had to carefully repair its antenna that had deteriorated. That one is as clean looking as mine was. For a second there, I thought mine fell into your hands but I dont see my antenna repair. I wish I hadnt sold mine years ago.
