I am a percussionist, but I just love the sounds of the low register instruments, the baritone sax is just one of those instruments that I could sit down and listen to all day long. I just wish there were more concertos for baritone saxophones. I equally enjoyed the bass clarinet the contrabassoon and the tuba.
Impressive as it is and believe me I love all things saxophone having played for 40+ years, not sure if the quartet + orchestra sits comfortably(bit like a string quartet with orchestra), but may have to listen to this more than once to "get it". Great to know Philip Glass is writing such material for the sax though.
Great quartet. I bought one of their discs back in the '90's, and they sound better than ever! I don't see a band arrangement of the accompaniment on his website. Someone should make one - hmm... ;-)
It is a good attempt at incorporating saxophones into an orchestra however disappointing to see no grand dynamics which is prevalent in classical saxophone quartet repertoire. This IS consistent with the Glass body of work and therefore legitimate.
Yes, The so called 'minimalist school' has no place on the concert stage alongside serious music. It's pop music pretending to be art music. It's what happens when you show a rock musician how to use a pencil.
Classical music had been a progressive art for centuries. This need for advance, drove some of the most competent composers of the 19th and 20th century to the edge of depression. Somewhere in the 20th century however, it turned into a rock to hide behind for people with various shades of incompetence. As long as you had a stylistic expalation, and a cool word to name your style, you could write the same piece over and over and even get applauded for it. What drives this out of classical music is the lack of effort to better oneself, compared to what one had done the previous day. Which in my humble opinion, is oozing out of the piece.
tomeofawesomeness Clearly you have never played any sort of minimalist music. The sheer amount of chops and endurance to get through a piece like this is far greater than anything Mozart or Beethoven would have written. The demands placed on the performer are rather great. "the lack of effort to better oneself, compared to what one had done the previous day." I challenge you to play any of Glass' music every single day and I'm sure you will find ways to better yourself and your playing. If you don't believe this is true then you don't know how to practice, or even what to practice. Good musicians have a certain respect for all genres and subgenres of music even if it isn't aesthetically pleasing, all music serves a purpose and has beauty to the creator. I challenge you to rethink your mislead opinion.
tomeofawesomeness Why do you determine yourself adequate to make this interference about a piece you have no knowledge upon but your "humble opinion"? I am confused, these musicians lack what you define as competence although they are playing music on level in which the skill of the musician is expressed through the composer's skill at writing parts which glorify each instrument. Now, I used to word "express" because music is a means of human expression, which will change with the eras, as you mentioned; but nevertheless it is still very powerful expression through music. You sprinkled a whole lot of nothing and unrelated facts in your statement which simply concluded with your opinion. What lets YOU justify that these are "lacking" musicians. or better, why should you?
Sounds just about like every other Philip Glass piece. And he doesn't know how to write for saxophones, either. Talk about your one trick ponies. Well, half a trick, anyway.
ahhhh nothing I like more than a sax quartet with a strong Bari player at it's core. I love this piece

Yee bari sax is my instrument :D
Best part is the tenor sax at 3/4 time
One of his best compositions
I like Philip Glass's music and saxophone quartets, so this is extra special to me.
I know this piece is mainly focused on the saxes but that bassoon section thooo
Un génie. Musique découverte lors d'un ballet du Great Gatsby. Super souvenir
Funny! I didn't see any pretentious posing, just a brilliant group of professional musicians about their work.
Bravo.
Bonjour . C'est un ravissement d'entendre les 4 saxos . Merci
I love Philip Glass's music, I'd never heard this. Stunning, I'll have to learn the Alto part. :) :)
I wish the classical saxophone as a whole had more recordings of this quality
Jako lijepa izvedba! Pozdrav iz Hrvatske 🙋🏻♂️

This is the first time I have seen a concerto saxophones performed with an orchestra
ETALLONIC performance.
Wonderfull barytone sound!
Love it, love it, absolutely love it !!
Love it, "kiffe" it. Reminds me Koyaanisqatsi

Awesome! Thank you for sharing this.
Nice

bom
At about 3:41 you are sure this is by Philip Glass.
This is called a signature.
we know.
It's called a lack of imagination and significant limitation.
@Lirim Vivaldi he is just more gifted individual than philip glass, so you know why.
otimo concerto
amazing .......
Great music!
❤❤
hey guys it's supposed to be pretty much the same thing that's what minimalist music is
Lindo demais
I love the soprano at 1:22
The bassoons drown everybody out
where did you get your hands on this footage?!
Filippo Bicchiere
Girotto sax quartet
Todos los conciertos de este hombre son iguales da lo mismo que escuches el 1º de violín el de chelo y violín este vaya rollo de tío

"and therefore legitimate" --- LOL! It's terrible writing for saxophones, much less a quartet.
Sounds like the soundtrack for a cheaply-produced, but well-written film about some weird dystopia...so monotonous, so frustrating, so unfulfilling!

@@1MRBASSMAN I agree with that sentiment for most of Glass, but I do enjoy a bit of the ole Steve Reich.
I just listened to some of the music you posted on your channel.
Too simple for me. I.E. Too minimalist.
+John Lindstrom How can it be TOO minimalist?
thethikboy
If it were just slightly minimalist, with SOME harmonic relief, I might like it.
Give us an example
I dont think this was originaly written for an orchestra but for a sax quartet...from what I found
It's funny how people are posing like they're playing a classical piece. So embarrassing.
Why don't you regard this as a classical work?

Tyler Klopenstine Is this a reply to my comment? It seriously doesn't have the faintest connection with what I wrote.

Usual drippy predictable repetition.
All I hear is a four bar vamp. Pathetic .
