    To me highlights were very few in 1991, quite a boring year when it comes to music. You can sense that the industry was looking for new impulses!

    I absolutely love these German chart videos of each year, there are always a few forgotten gems that I discover, in this case the 2 songs by Mike and the Mechanics. 1991 was also the year in which REM had their only German top 10 hit, 'Shiny Happy People'. Strangely, 'Losing My Religion' didn't enter the German charts at all, despite massive radio airplay (which it still receives today).

    • @knarf2570
      @knarf2570 ปีที่แล้ว

      From my own memory, I can say about "Losing My Religion" that the title was released shortly before the album (a month?) and really became famous in Germany through the album. "Shiny Happy People" was for R.E.M. only the second Chartentry in Germany ever - they were still relatively unknown to the "broad" masses in 1991.
      Personally, I first noticed the song through the video on MTV (at that time the only music channel in Germany - and still completely in English) and then bought the album right away. That might have been the case for many buyers back then, because the album was and is great - even today. And also very successful with over 1 million sales in Germany.

    1991, the landscape changed a bit for everyone - poor Jason Donovan had to suffer :) :). I remember starting high school at that time, buying dozens of pirated tapes - there were no others on the PL market - and simultaneously with new music, I was learning the "old classics" thanks to remixes or new editions - 1:43, 6:21, 8:22, 15:44, 16:26, 31:34. And they won me in the end, though I am still impressed how visionary music was made by KLF or Massive Attack..........Francis, your passion is worth all the money in the world!

      Yes, but at least there are also German songs charting. I don't think you'll see any in the UK or the States. I honestly think that it is better that I don't understand the lyrics perfectly because many lyrics from popular songs in my native tongue German are not that good. 😌

      @@francispelletier3647 Wow. It really didn't chart in Germany. I thought it was a big hit here because you can still hear it on the radios. But then you see again: radio songs don't mean they were successful in the charts. This is a good example again.

      @antontirol182 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@tomschreiner3717 There were always cases where the album was more successful in the German charts. The albums of R.E.M., Tom Petty or Simple Minds did really well in 1991, but you also saw that with for example "Born In The U.S.A." or "Brothers In Arms".

    These German singles charts are mostly hilarious, mainly because Germans are such nerds and make silly music and German is not a very musical language. Anyway, the best song on this list is, ironically, a Seattle USA band (my home city) with a German-sounding name, Queensryche doing "Silent Lucidity". It is clearly their tribute to Pink Flloyd's "Comfortably Numb" and they do a great job of it.
