Member Profile: Doug Lane is a farm forester located in Kaeo, Far North, New Zealand. Doug is a retired farmer, sharing his experience of forestry in the 'winterless' North.
On this award-winning property, plantings are for timber, aesthetics and to create a pleasant working environment. Trees planted on land that was marginal for stock have made stock management much easier - providing shelter and keeping stock out of gullies. Also naturally regenerating totara is managed for timber production.
Doug Lane describes appropriate land use and where to profitably plant trees on otherwise unproductive land, while beautifying the farm and providing stock shelter.
