That shawl has Lenny Kravitz Scarf proportions! 😂 It’s so beautiful, I’d probably try to do surgery: pick up right before the second or third lace panel, cut the wider part off, knit the rib border back, bind off. Hope you find a solution you’re happy with!
I love your colours for the crochet cardigan! They look so good together. I also really loved your shawl- it us huge but I think it looks really good the way you styled it, almost like a poncho! X
Good job with your sewing! Some tips to avoid fabric getting caught in the throat plate of your sewing machine: 1- make sure to use the correct needle for the fabric you are sewing and that it is a new, sharp one. Ball point needles are recommended for knit fabrics. 2- make sure the tension is correct for your project. Check the user manual for how to adjust this or watch TH-cam videos then practice on scrap fabric that is the same as the project you are sewing. 3- if sewing through a single layer of fabric, or a lightweight fabric, use a fabric stabilizer which you can purchase at your local sewing center, Walmart, or online. 4- many machines need you to hold your thread somewhat taught as you start sewing to keep the fabric from pulling down into the throat plate at the edge of a seam.
Candyshoppeyarns has tips I agree with here! I have another tip to add: when I sew a very lightweight fabric, I'll start stitching about 1/2" down then back-stitch to the startig edge before continuing. My industrial machine loves to eat those lightweight fabrics!I'm not sure about the side seam issue. I think it maybe tension-related, however, pressing seams on knits can really help the puckers. I think that has to do with using a cotton yarn on a synthetic knit, so you're sort of "blocking" the cotton yarn to the garment, if that makes sense. I'd love to hear more about your Singer machine! I'm thinking of buying one for my home use, instead of bringing all of my projects into work on the industrials. Happy Thanksgiving!
When you first mentioned the shawl being much too big, I thought the same as you, turn it into a blanket. It really is beautiful, Amy. I use Kroy for my hubby’s socks as well. Very durable for in his work boots.
I actually love how you styled the ginormous shawl! Both tied like a hap and how you said it was cute in the front...Very cute! Great job on getting 8 of 9 done of your Make9
An inexpensive stabilizer for sewing on stretchy fabric is tissue paper - like you stuff in a gift bag. Also, did you use a needle that was meant for stretchy fabric? Love your 3rd version of the Hinterland!
Thank you for lovely episode! I have few shlanket size of your Hiraeth-shawl an I get ton of use during winter. I style it like you did it last time with your shlanket. Our winters are cold and windy. I live on coast of Finland so wind is cold and moist. Shlankets are the thing to keep me warm from jaw, neck and shoulders. So just come here on vacation in mid winter to get use for your new shawl. Really I recommend coming during summer. Then it’s nice here winters are just horribly cold. Your dress looks very nice.
Could you hear me chuckling about your shawl?! It is sooo pretty! Making a matching shawl to make a blanket is genius! You are a busy bee!❤ Your crochet sweater will be super!! Your house must be really warm! I would freeze in your beautiful dress!! Happy Thanksgiving!❤
I am so happy that you shared the giant shawl. I know it is disappointing for you, BUT I think it would be perfect for me to make for my sister. She is a historical reenactor and something she could wear hap style, I think would be perfect for her. (We'll see if I can get it done before the winter ends for her!) :)
Your cardigan is going to be so gorgeous! Love the colors you chose. I'm really wanting to knit that shawl, but I'm nervous about the size. I think the yarn I have is a little lighter so I'm thinking I'll go down a needle size and end up with more of an average sized shawl. I really like the idea of you turning yours into a blanket! Hope you had a wonderful thanksgiving, Amy! ❤️
Love seeing all your gorgeous projects..I will follow your Ariana journey as I have the pattern and am keen to use fingering yarns but thought I might have to use them double..will see how you go on this one. Hope your Thanksgiving was special ..take care, hugs from South Africa..❤
Hi Amy. I know that your shawl is really big, but right now I’m really cold and I would love to put it around my shoulders to keep my shoulders and arms warm. 😊
This has been perfect "day-after-thanksgiving" watching! ☺ I love your Hinterland dress! The fabric you chose is such a lovely colorway. It is possible that the "dragging" up at the side seams is caused by the stitch you've used. From what I can see, it looks like the seams aren't stretching as much as the rest of the skirt fabric. Usually when I sew knit fabrics on my sewing machine I use a narrow zig-zag or "lightening" stitch because it has more stretch. And I think you're correct, the pockets might be exaggerating it as well. It has been so much fun seeing you delve more into the world of sewing, especially since I haven't been able to sew as much. It's really making me want to get back to it! I've been finding recently that I am most comfortable wearing a very similar "mum-uniform" and it would be so nice to make a few more dresses in that style to add to my wardrobe. I think turning your Hiraeth shawl into a blanket is such a good idea! I haven't blocked mine, but I imagine it is pretty close in size to yours, maybe a bit smaller. I only wear it in the hap-style you showed. It was really nice when my little boy was a newer baby because I could wrap the shawl completely around the both of us when I would have in the baby carrier while walking. I have been wanting to make a granny square cardigan so I'm very excited to see how your Ariana cardigan turns out! I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving!! ❤❤
For the dress, to keep the fabric from going in the foot feed, use a stabilizer. Stabilizer should help with the side seam also. I think Joann's has it. Just ask about it. It is really cute dress.
Oh my gosh that shawl is very big (I think it might ever surpass one Stephen West shawls). It's beautiful and I can see it as a blanket after you make another. I think that's a great idea you had. I'll be interested in seeing how your new cast on (Cardi) turns out as I would like one in a lighter weight yarn as well. I'm always impressed with your ability to use what weight you want even if it's not what's recommended. I tried it once and it was a disaster so I haven't tried again. I hope you and your family had a wonderful Thanksgiving. Take care.
For sewing knit fabric, at the neckline I would use a stretch stabilizer, they sell them in narrow rolls…. My other trick is using tissue paper and then rip it away after the sewing is done… sometimes it pays to test your options and using a long or shorter stitch will solve the problem too… and another possible trick is using wooly nylon thread just in the bobbin… never the top thread. Hope those help
I am making the Hiraeth Shawl, and I'm so close to finishing but I have run out of yarn too and the yarn has been discontinued. I looked on Rav. and I saw several people say they ran out too, so it may just be the pattern. I tend to be more of a tighter knitter, and I tend to buy more yarn than needed, so I'm convinced that's what it is.
To make a matching shawl is a great idea. But, can’t you just pick up the chain stiches and continue the pattern in reverse? Happy Thanksgiving! ❤ (I loved when you said “my fellow Americans”. I rarely hear it. )
The shawl is beautiful. I have sewn a lot over the years. Did you use a needle specifically for stretchy knits or knits in general? Makes a big difference. Schmetz jersey would be what I would recommend and Joanne's should have it.

Happy Thanksgiving,,,,
Amy, I love the Hiraeth Shawl. It would be so cozy on those bitter cold winters. Your knitting is so beautiful.
I love your beautiful shawl! I think it would make a fantastic blanket!
I love your colours for the crochet cardigan! They look so good together. I also really loved your shawl- it us huge but I think it looks really good the way you styled it, almost like a poncho! X
The giant shawl is awesome. I wouldn't turn it into a blanket, buy sounds like a cool idea. Your kid's sweater turned out great.
Good job with your sewing!

Thank you so much for all of these great tips, Deborah! I appreciate your help so much!!! 💓
Thank you for the tips! I just got my machine at WalMart. It is a Singer Heavy Duty model. @@comette4u

Thank you for the tips! I didn’t use the right needle, so I’ll definitely make that adjustment on my next version.
17:03 I think the blanket idea is genius!!! And a scrappy marled half would looks so great with the neutral side you have completed!
That’s a good idea to turn it into a variation of the half and half wrap using it as a blanket.
I was wondering when you would post another podcast, I was hoping it was today and you did. I just saw it and watch. Thank you for your podcast

I usually layer my dresses with cardigans, but I think it was rather warm the day I recorded. ☺
Happy thanksgiving to you and your family❤
Love your new hinterland! You have inspired me to try one, but I haven’t quite finished yet. May more need to try with a knit fabric too!

Thanks so much for your input regarding my sewing. Maybe I’ll try a zigzag stitch on the sides next time. Thanks, Emily!!! 💓
Happy Thanksgiving!!
I am planning to make the Ariana Cardigan next year I am still collecting yarn 😊 Can’t wait to see how yours will turn out ❤

Thank you for the suggestion! I truly appreciate that! ❤
I’ve used a roll of receipt tape for stabilizer to keep fabric out of the feed area. It’s cheap and tears away easily. I just buy a roll at Walmart

I have those needles, but forgot to use them. Thank you for the reminder! 💖
Hi Amy. Would you consider the Palette held double “soft” or more “rustic”?
I would consider it more rustic than soft.
