I never leave comments but, y’all, this is crazy. Insulting Dawn is like insulting Bambi… she’s adorable, kind, and makes life feel like springtime. ♥️ I’ve been a minimalist for many years and decluttering, organizing, and beautifying (as I like to call it) are all equal parts of the journey. It’s wild we care so much what someone providing us free amazing content does with their spices in their home 😂… and btw, mine are decanted as well and no regrets. And yes, high quality bins stand the test of time so well and the price per use over time (especially with not having to rebuy when the cheap ones break) actually saves money in the long run. We love you Dawn more than you’ll ever know!!! ♥️ You are the sweetest, most humble, awesome, feels-like-a-real-friend person on TH-cam & I stand by that forever!

As someone who is in Take Your House Back and the Minimal Mom Membership Group, I had to stop this video halfway through to say.........who do some people think they are? The authority on plastics? The authority on organization? Absolutely not! AND, if these negative commenter's were the authority, what business is it of their's anyway? It's none of anyone's business what you choose to have in your home. It is MY responsibility as a viewer to take all the positives I can from your videos and if I don't like something, then I don't need to make a comment. When will people learn to just shut their mouths if they have nothing constructive to add?

I've always alphabetized my spices, my DVDs, my books, my CDs, etc. it just makes things so much easier to find. Also with decanting spices, if I know I'm not going to use a lot quickly, I will decant some to a smaller spice jar and put the rest in air tight jar that I don't open as often, besides, I like the way it looks.

I absolutely agree! I'm at the point where I am finalizing what I've done over the past three years so we have only what we need and I'm organizing certain areas like my pantry, refrigerator, and bathroom vanities. When I first started, I got rid of a lot of organizing products I already had that really just allowed me to hold more junk. Now that I'm reaching the end of my decluttering (before I move to just maintaining), I know what organizers I need that will match how we live and help keep everything in order and actually prevent me from collecting more than I need. Like you said, it's a worthwhile investment! 🙂

As we’re drowning in plastic and stuff as a society we should be careful with buying new plastic Knick-Knacks from Amazon that really… isn’t a very social company. Getting rid of things just to replace it after 2-3 years isn’t the goal of minimalism for me.

I always find it interesting that so many people feel that if something is "excessive" or "unnecessary", or a "waste of time" to them, then that makes it unnecessary or a waste of time for EVERYone. That is such a narcissistic way to look at things! @@leannewith3 that’s true but she was speaking on ladybugs, not crickets…..ladybugs NEED the visual simplicity/aesthetic effect. It’s the exact reason why we will shove junk in our closets, drawers and cabinets til they’re bursting at the seams! Cause we prioritize the visual simplicity over everything else. Crickets prioritize detailed organization. And as a 100 percent ladybug, I personally can vouch that the best way to motivate myself to work on a space or keep it organized, is to make it look pretty!! The only thing that got me to FINALLY organize my utility closet (Monica closet) was to buy the pretty labels I had been putting buying off FIRST! You’re “supposed to” declutter first. But I have learned that SOMETIMES I needed to do it backwards. The urge to put those beautiful labels to use was the only thing that got me to rip iff the bandaid and get the clutter OUT!!! As you said, "The first 6yrs of your channel was one phase of your life," and now you're in a new stage. No one expects an adult to act and think like a child, so we have to learn to have that same perspective for adults. We are still growing. And even still, you have developed the habits for these systems to work now, but your before you would not have kept these systems up bc you weren't ready. Each phrase that you show is is where you are. Depending on the stage of life the viewer is in, they can watch said year of videos and get something out of it. In July 2008, my childhood home exploded. I spent years in therapy. I used to do things "because I had to be different than my mom." I now view true hoaders with compassion including my mother that we had to go no contact with for safety. At first, I thought this channel would be triggering, but I drink it up. I went through so much healing and have had multiple beautiful apartments. I didn't think I wanted to live in an actual house again, but you make me feel that at 41, I should try. Now they are all lined with the same color padding, and that makes my heart happy ♥️! I am also gradually replacing my plastic food containers with glass ones. My spices are decanted in to little glass jars that are in a drawer by my stove, again because it makes my heart happy every single time I open that drawer and see all those matching labeled jars just waiting for me to decide which one I’ll use in whatever I’m making! It’s the little things in life! By the way, I’m 72 and have been married almost 52 years! During the early years and raising 3 girls, shoe boxes were used as containers for whatever, other boxes were made use of, just whatever was around and suit the purpose! Same thing in my classroom when I started teaching! I did pretty those up some, though!
I love your videos and your way of teaching us old ladies new things! Love you and your family, don’t let any negative comments get you down (I know, easier said than done)! Love from Texas ♥️

I have been following you for years. I am a part of your mentorship group(mostly watch from the sidelines). I have learned so much from you and have shared you and your tips and tricks with other women in various ways. Recently, I was able to share your decluttering wisdom with a friend, who needed help decluttering and reorganizing her bedroom in preparation for knee surgery. We were able to declutter 3 black trash bags of clothes and 1 dresser. All of her folded clothes fit in one dresser now. At the beginning of the decluttering session I told her that we would be able to fit her clothes in 1 dresser, and she said, "There is no way!!!!". It felt so good to help her. She had her surgery and is now able to come home to a safe, decluttered, and organized bedroom all because of you. Thank you! I am grateful for you.

Several years ago I created a spice drawer- I decant to clear glass jars. I have never regretted it- jars purchased at ikea for reasonable price. Here’s what I love- no searching when cooking all alphabetical. Also on grocery day I simply pull open the drawer and can instantly see any spice that is low or out- no more getting into a recipe and finding out I am out of a necessary spice. Game changer.

I agree with you 100%. I started major decluttering nearly 20 years ago before the term minimalist was coined. Then for several years I itemizing on my phone by date each item donated or discarded. I’d feel the same thrill of eliminating items I formerly got from shopping. After I was satisfied with a drawer, area or room, I treated myself to pretty organizers. Many are bamboo because they match the inside of my cabinets, but the clear ones you use look good also. I use mason jars, crocks & baskets, etc. to decant. Every nook & cranny of my home makes me happy. On my worst day I can be ready for guests in 10-15 min or less. My clutter muscles are so strong now I no longer need to keep lists, but it’s still an ongoing process.
The term minimalist shouldn’t be measured against anyone else, it’s keeping only those things you use and/or find beautiful - in the best scenario an item is BOTH!
My husband of 44 years is now is in the end stages of cancer and I physically can’t completely manage him myself. Almost 3 months ago we moved in temporarily with our son, daughter-in-law & teenage grandchildren because they have a 1st floor bath. We’re on a mattress & boxspring in the living room living out of 2 carry on suitcases. I brought 2 framed photos of us as our only decor, my Bible, a card game, our finance & bill paying box & bag, and a few special kitchen items. Other than medical supplies & equipment, that’s it and we’ve been fine. If I hadn’t been so organized previously, I can’t imagine how we’d have coped. I found your channel late in my journey and it reinforced my accomplishments so I very much enjoy watching. Keep up the good work, and don’t apologize or defend your choices. Thanks for allowing us to peak in on your journey.

Thinking it out before I buy, only buying the right items means 1. I can spend more on what I want as I am saving so much on not just buying because it is on sale 2. I have to question those who criticize Dawn's choices as wasteful or environmentally irresponsible: Do they drive a car? Do they shop at the supermarket instead of growing their own food? Are they on the power grid? I mean, at what point do we accept that we all do stuff that purists find objectionable, and that includes the purists...except for the ones who live in a cave, wear animal pelts & fig leaves and forage for all their food!

I still watch your videos and have learned so much from you. You were my companion when I started decluttering and I don’t think I would have been able to start then without your help! So I’m saying this just in case it’s helpful to future content. I think if your more recent type of videos (organizing content with an emphasis on what products you bought or are trying etc.) was what you were producing then, I wouldn’t have been inspired and wouldn’t have kept watching. The big reason you motivated me was because your emphasis was on decluttering and getting things out, and not organization and buying containers to look pretty. As a perfectionist, I was completely overwhelmed and wanted to have a house that you have now - with the pretty spices lined up, matching organizing containers etc. But your focus was just on getting things out and you frequently mentioned not buying new containers and instead “shopping your house” for containers and baskets. You met people where they were and it seemed attainable. I’m really happy for you and your success, and you of course deserve a pretty house with whatever containers you like! Maybe though for the new people who are looking around at the piles of clutter in their house and then looking at your house now and product/organization videos and thinking it’s in no way attainable, you could link a playlist to older videos or mention how long it took you to get here and how it’s important to not even buy things at first and “shop your house” etc.
I’m so grateful to you for starting this channel. My life changed in a big way after decluttering. I do miss the old content though and sometimes find myself not watching new videos or stopping early, and going back to watch old ones. And that’s ok, you can’t be everything to everyone! I just wanted to mention in case this perspective might help reach more people in the future that want to declutter but are turned off from the organization/product videos.

Dawn, you have changed my whole outlook on my house. I was constantly buying bins and boxes to “organize” my house. They never worked! Once I started following you I realized that the problem wasn’t how I was storing my things but how many things I was trying to store. That mindset shift has made such a difference in our home. You helping me in my kitchen and “giving” me permission to store kitchen things that are occasionally used in my basement has been so freeing. Now that my house is managed I have been slowly replacing old bins and baskets with nicer ones because I am confident that I will maintain what I have and that they are an investment. I am happy to pass on my cheaper, less sturdy baskets to someone who is in the messy middle and doesn’t know what they will eventually need. Thank you for giving us permission to do what feels right for ourselves and to just feel good about our homes.

I understand not everyone can get on board with matching spice bottles. But I don’t see much difference in that and your clear acrylic bins in the bathroom that function and force you to keep things organized. Part of being organized is the ease of putting items back. When one of those spice bottles is out of place it is so apparent where it goes! The visual of the home affects us! What a person can manage and put up with is up to the individual. You’ve taken your time at getting to the point where you can tweak your behind cabinet items to really make it function and be visually “quiet”. I think cabinets and closets can be organized but so visually loud when you look at it that it’s so overwhelming to find things. Keep on Dawn!!

Viewers need to remember that Dawn's house is small, probably much smaller than many of the viewers' homes. A small house will function so much better when it is yes, decluttered, but ALSO well-organized. Space is at a premium in a small house, and even the "visual space" needs to be carefully assessed and rationed out. We downsized from 2600 sq. ft. to 1500 sq. ft. and before I wouldn't have considered decanting spices and staples, because I had PLENTY of cabinet space. Now, my pantry/cabinet area is less than half of what I had before, so YES, I decanted spices and staples in order to fit my tiny spaces. It's easy to be critical, but in reality, people must do what works for them.

The one thing I know FOR SURE is that when you finally declutter your home, organise it to work for you and maintain it, often what follows is that you'll replace cardboard boxes, nappy boxes, plastic ice cream containers, handmade drawer-dividers and old jars etc with more attractive, durable or easier to use products BECAUSE they look pretty and make you feel good using them as well as make it easier to use depending on the item. The WHAT you buy totally depends on your budget and the aesthetic you want to create. There are NO RULES outside of that things should support you to make your home function well and then be pleasing to you so you are motivated to keep going. LOVE your videos, you do an amazing job 💕

Dawn, I think you are amazing. I have received so much great information from you, including encouragement when I felt like I could not declutter or organize. I do not understand why some people feel as if they need to share every thought that goes through their head. They can just chew up the good and spit out the bad if they disagree but there is no reason to tear people down in the process. Thank you for all your hard work. I love trying products that work from people I trust. May God bless you!

    Hello Dawn,
For people who are autistic or neurodivergent, your organization video with links to products truly helps. Having visual clutter can be very challenging for us. I would much rather have some plastic organizational items that make my products less visually distracting than have no plastic and all these name brand boxes that look like clutter.

I'm actually really glad you did this video. I feel like a lot of your recent videos have been about buying more stuff and I''m already content with how my house is organized so these have made me second guess myself a bit. But as you explain you spent the first 6 years of your channel getting through the messy middle and now it's about enjoying your environment (which I started with you in the beginning as my first kiddo was born and he is about to be 6). I now feel like I don't have to get sucked into the comparison trap but instead I can cheer you along for where you are at ❤

Tried the garbage bags in bottom… gross. They take on the smell of the garbage even without leaking. Will never do this again. Love you and everything you do. You’ve enriched my life for the past 3 years and now I’m passing on what I’ve learned from you. Take care and let go of the negative Nellys!!!

When I turned 50, I was officially an empty nester! First time in my life that I'm living alone. First year was an adjustment. By the second year, I'm loving it! I don't care what anyone else thinks about anything pertaining to me & my home! I dress for comfort & LOVE having spots in my home that make my heart soar! I organized my linen closet so well, I find myself leaving the door open, grabbing a chair & sitting there! Admiring it! It makes me happy! It's so lovely to live your life & only worry about my opinion! People who come over are only there for an hour or 2. I'm not going to change a single thing!

I am a picky viewer, but I have always enjoyed watching your vlogs.
I have been ‘decluttered’ by two TV companies. I have a chronic problem, needling regular boosts to keep going. Yours have been SO helpful.
I love your attitude, and advice. The smile in your voice was so engaging. I am glad I found you.

I am a naturally neat, clean, organized person. I'm Dutch...what can I say.
When I first began to make a converted effort in the direction of minimalism, with the goal of being a minimalist, I would have thought that these pretty "extras" were not important. Now that the years have gone by, I too have purchased containers and products to make my life simpler and easier. One day, you might too. All the best my people❤

I bought a spin around spice container and decanted all my spices into it and I love it and it makes me so happy. I cook every single day usually a couple times a day and this is in necessity as well as being beautiful. Rock on sister Dawn 🙌🏼

You don't need to justify wanting to upgrade your organisation tools to anyone. Alot of the time, these upgrades can make your life easier and at the point of the Journey you're in, isn't that what you should be doing now anyways. The people who have been watching your channel for a very long time, know what you stand for. :)

As someone who spends a majority of the day in my kitchen, I love my spice jars. I didn’t have them for a long time, as it wasn’t a necessity, but then last year for my birthday I asked my husband if I could order them. And I agree…they do bring me so much joy to open that cabinet and see it organized every time!

I watch Dawn's videos regularly. If something she does wouldn't work for me, then I know it works for her and that's cool. But there's been SO much I've learned from her videos towards making my house so much less cluttered. I focus on what helps me. Thank you so much, Dawn.

I wish I could give you “giraffe ears” so you can’t hear ( read ) those thoughts! I’m reading about Marshall Rosenberg’s giraffe language, also called nonviolent communication. giraffes have the biggest ears and hearts ! Just be you, Dawn. Thankful for minimal you! 😊

I decanted my spice cabinet & made matching labels - love it! so much less stress finding things, they are all the same size, easier to organize, and dang looks so pretty! also, I have gifted this to tall my best friends & family members, they love it too! I like the the trash bag dispenser! Shoe racks get shoes off the floor, easy to clean around, you know where to find the shoes, its what works for you. What I love about your videos is you show us your process of how you decide what to keep & how you figure out how you want to use your space, its all about what functions best for you. You are great & I enjoy your videos, Thank yo
