Did anyone else find it absolutely adorable that Holmes would rather spend Christmas with Watson than take on the case of that rich, spoiled noblewoman? Please say I'm not the only one.
@ShawDAMAN True, Holmes was possible around mid-20s or 30 at the beginning of 'A Study In Scarlet' (although the main plot in the novel is a bit later...though I believe only a few years). I have no problem with Holmes being a little older in some versions as I did imagine him looking older latter on at least (and the timeline of TV series have to be different due to the production order; so they exist in a different world from the Canon) but energetic and vigorous.
@FUTURISIM Cushing is one of my favourite actors too. He is the ultimate van Helsing to me - and I am a fan of Dracula and its spin-off media; a big fan - Frankenstein (though more ruthless than in the book) and many other characters.
@kingbilgames well that's the beauty of it I suppose, his age is never stated in the books, so there's some wiggle room. But really I always thought of him as being quite a bit younger to start with than either Brett or Cushing were when portraying him. It is implied that he could be mistaken for a 'student' in 'study in scarlet' which would put him in his mid-late 20's at the most at that point......
@92af Peter Cushing is one of, along with Jeremy Brett (my personal favourite, but with close followers) and also Basil Rathbone (though that is seen as cliched. His films were not too good after the first three, but he was a good Holmes, and appeared on radio), Ian Richardson, Christopher Lee, Robert Stephens and Nicol Williamson. I like them all nearly the same, but Jeremy Brett won me over for top spot due to how many he is in and how much it took over his life!
@ShawDAMAN I think his age was fine for the role. Holmes might be young or middle-aged in 'Study in Scarlet', depending on when you set his birthday and him finishing college. Brett is my favourite, but Cushing is close - both are meticulous in their roles. I have no problem with people saying Cushing is the best, I think he had more than potential, he had the right stuff...just his series was mostly destroyed by the stupid BBC so they could reuse the film tape.
@fryboitah I agree Brett's the overall best, but I think Cushing had the potential to be even better than Brett. He just didn't get a really good committed series dedicated to him. If he'd started younger and had that it might have been different. I like Stock as Watson too.
@kingbilgames ......By the time Doyle wrote 'his last bow' set in WWI when he is brought out of his bee-keeping retirement to catch a german spy we get the impression of an aging but still vigorous man perhaps in or approaching his 60's. Cushing looks that old here already. But I don't quibble because both he and Brett did a great job with the part, it would just be ideal to have someone younger.
@ShawDAMAN Yeah, I sort of see where you are coming from. In that regard he was better in 'The Hound of The Baskervilles' because he looked the right age. Cushing's wife was very ill the time this was made and so I think his looks in this are due to stress about that (and she died not long after; and he claimed that he died too at the same time); Cushing has always be slim but he did usually look healthier and energetic (he flies all over the place in 'Dracula').
@jwsiebelink1 LOL Actually I always thought it a shame that they turned Rathbone's films into contemporary (for the time) yarns. He was a good Holmes but he needed better materials. Luckily his radio career as Holmes was much better.
Peter Cushing was the best Sherlock Holmes ever
92ACF, Basil Rathbol better
Estpenda serie no dejare de verlas, muy buenas

I think it's super charming too.

@92af I'm a big fan of Peter Cushing, but regarding Sherlock Holmes he is my personal No. 2, but he is close behind Jeremy Brett!

Oh, stop quibbling over "who is Sherlock Holmes." Sherlock Holmes is Sherlock Holmes. Take each portrayal separately and quit the pretentious whining
Homes is awesome in general.
