Maybe the front parking sensors would interfere with it's ability to tailgate? It's a very important attribute for a lot of Hilux drivers.

@@fouzaannoble5726 I'm a hatchback owner/driver who also very occasionally drives a 2018 Hilux owned by the business he directs. I can vouch for the fact that I tailgate more often and closer in the Hilux. Maybe it has something to do with abhorrent number of slow drivers in my area, or that they insist on pulling out 30m in front of me (admittedly less in the Hilux compared to the hatchback) at such a speed, and that the Hilux is attached to a big ass steel bull-bar. 🤣
I own 2014 SR5 dual cab manual , just clocked over 200,000kms other than regular services, tires never had a issue with it only selling mine because my accountant says a newer one I can claim Tax for my business otherwise I would keep it. Honestly bullet proof. there's a service center on every street corner and they keep their value. one of the best cars I have ever owned.
For me, reliability is top priority. Thanks for the review, convinced me to pick up a 2018 SR5 (facelift model) a couple months ago and so far it has not disappointed. I've already taken it over some serious tracks and it hasn't skipped a beat.
DPF isn't an issue, and it even has the force regen button which I dont think many other diesels have.
1 year later, you still driving the hilux?
@robkenway852 Hey mate, I am still driving the Hilux! I've put on another 40,000km since I bought it and still no issues. I've got no plans in selling it anytime soon.
Great and honest review, so good I went out and bought 2018 SR5 with 70,000km to tow my new boat. Mine has AC air vents for the back seat, must of came in the 2018 model. I have gone from a Mazda CX5 as I needed something a with bit more room to throw gear in the back. It drives as you said a little bumpy in the back but with the boat and some gear in it it's not too bad. So far I love the the Hilux and hope it's as reliable as our 2013 Hiace diesel van which has 320,000km never miss a beat.

Best ute out there and those cup holders are the best, you can even just turn it into a coin tray too by pushing the button on it.

Thanks AK & Jim - I beat the Covid tax by three days when I bought my 2010 Hilux Diesel Auto.with moderate kms in excellent condition with ARB canopy for $18000 in early Feb 2020 - despite having ABS, airbags, cruise control and steering wheel audio controls the value for money is no where near all of my previous Subarus which had a more refined build and comfortable ride - however you really can’t live in a Subaru on long roadtrip/outback treks - hence I’ve done the now common practice of replacing the tub/canopy with a kitted out aluminium canopy - John in SA

Mine's an older model(2009-2011) with the venerable 1KD engine&5 spd manual.Coming on to 250,000kms soon&2nd timing belt.Its been reliable as well it should since it's my daily driver.Gotta say,the plactic clips on mine has gone all brittle&fallen of.Lights are starting to get a bit milky.My model doesn't even have a reversing camera so the one you're testing is better in that regard.Oh,it also needs a new valve cover gasket since I've noticed some leaks in that area.Not easy to spot as this car still uses a top mount intercooler.But the overwhelming feeling of the car is it's a dependable buddy that won't let you down. 😁👍

Had mine for 2 yrs now. Miss my parking sensors… and yes that cup holder takes some getting used to… and so do the cabin rattles in comparison to the former model. Do miss my D4D at times….
Just bought 2017 single cab sr 4x4 and your review confirmed I got it right. Will watch for extended warranty re dpf etc. Overal, great review. Have a 2003 2wd workmate for years with no issues. Hoping for the same in new one.
Update: DPF! yes literally the first day I took it home after waiting two weeks for qld to Vic rego and adding window tint the dpf clogged on it first day. Local Toyota dealer said give it run, warning on dpf went to urgent warranting. Left at local dealer ( not the seller at Toyota dealer in qld) and a week and $2800 in repairs paid by Toyota Australia later, the handed it back. 12,000km later and most for hard farm work lugging heavy wood and not a problem. Front cloth seat has done wear but a perfect fit cover cost me $90 to fix that. Added a bull bar and winch and again it has worked hard lugging wood out of forests. Bogged it once in a swamp. Winch around tree pulled it out with 1 tonne in the back.
Agree side cup holders are dumb so I only use it for water.
Drive: very comfortable actually having come out of a 2015 Subaru Outback. Driven to Sydney and back. Not a problem.
Fuel economy is not a stand out. But again it is a work truck.
DOH! I did forget something. my pet peeves or should I say “ding”.
No 1. DING. Yes everything goes “ding” and if you actually use your Ute for farm work it pisses you off. Open door to open a gate to a paddock, and you get a ding to say the door is open. Turn the car off and leave the keys in the ignition and open the front drivers door and you get another DING. Don’t put the seatbelt on at low sped crawling over a paddock, you get a DING. The keys are in the ignition one is a specially annoying as you lock the car with the key buttons. Which means you can’t lock your keys in the car any more like early 2000 so why have it? Extremely stupid because it forces you to take the keys out if you have the door open it’s only in white to keep the fall through the seat on the ground on in the paddock you name it.
And No 2.
There is no off setting for the front lights!. What you say? no off? That is correct. There is only auto, driving/parking lights or lights on. And again the issue is if you’re working in a paddock and you’re driving around the car will automatically put the lights if it’s overcast, twilight or under heavy shade.
So if you pull up and you don’t open the door or leave the car on radio and open the door the lights are still on. Take a phone call, sitting there with your car turned off thinking all good or you’re checking out some cattle or something BUT your lights are still on draining the battery. All in all the above issues could be fixed by having a simple “ farm mode” turning all this nonessential nanny state off.
Considering that you can bolt on a KVP or a ZPU-4 in it, and the frame will probabily survive the war it is used in to be used again as a farm truck, you can consider the legendary reputation deserved.

Each to their own but my work has the SR model of these and with 170,000 to 195,000 kms they are still strong and well serviced and all our team highly recommend them and one guy is a Nissan owner that says a lot

Pretty sure the parking sensors come when you fit the obligatory ARB bullbar and rear bar. When you hit something, that’s when you stop.
That 10,000km service interval is like the mechanic said in the discovery 5 video, erring on the side of caution, id rather service it often than have expensive service caps at the end of it. And also the shorter service interval means longer lifespan for the engine and car as a whole

Yeah still got my SR5 hilux exctra cab 125 000 ks on it well serviced all around good ute . One thing I never hear mentioned is the rear tail shaft they had an issue and I am on my third one all replaced under warranty . The rear tailshaft at around 30000ks was worn in the slip joint and you could hear a light click when coming on or off power .
The boot space section of these videos are by far the funniest part of the videos. Don’t leave them out.

I drove a hilux raider 2016 model had a massive accident with it. Fell a sleep with the cruise control on,and drove length wise true a 12 meter long concrete wall against a a thick tree..long story short..stept out alive with a few scratches… I’m always were my seatbelt but the front airbag never deployed! That car had al his service done.. but nobody can give me a satisfied answer why that airbag didn’t work! All the curtain airbag came out though!
Thanks very much well explained . Your right about the drink holders not very smart to put it above your leg or near electrical equipment. The four cylinder is what it is cheap and it is a work horse fit for the trades
I have experience with hilux since 2005 model and that placement is perfect, right near the air conditioning vent for chilling.
It has never spilled anything so far. Unless it is unreasonably full

Indeed it must be that beauty resides in the eye of the beholder, because I can only be in utter disbelief if not highly negatively opinionated about anyone who would think of this generation Hilux as ugly.
I have a MK5 manual dualcab. Work horse has not let me down when off-roading

I bought a Hilux SR5 2017 last year and I love it. My DPF issue had been sorted by Toyota with $0 charge. If you want a ute for offroad I’ll recommend this bad boy. 👌🏽
The 2.8 also has prop shaft seal issues. Toyota south Africa forums have some 2.8 that went with as little as 6000km on them. Also a very small cabin in comparison to the others. But mostly bullet proof cars...
I wish they bring chrome front bumpers back onto these trucks. They just look better and more solid in my opinion. Cheers!

Whatever you do not put a catch can on if your car is under warranty. Also crank case pressure difference problems can arise.

Noisy timing change issues? Last time I checked, mine had a toothed rubber belt.
5:50 Look the speakers are nothing special but once you play with them a bit and increase the bass they are actually not too bad. Look any JBL or Bose system would beat this by a landslide but I still think they are pretty good speakers.
You should, they are a good well made car, just not at the prices people want for them, overpriced for what they actually are, much better options out there !!

Last week my 2018 imported used Toyota Hilux SR5 extra cab automatic 4WD finally came after 4 months of waiting man it's amazing I love it. The interior was pretty nasty but after an afternoon of cleaning It's looks almost new. I had to buy a new battery because the battery died after being parked on a ship for almost 4 months and then suddenly the CV joint was giving a lot of problems I was like how can this be but when I took the part to an auto parts store they said that was the wrong CV joint like someone changed it and put an old 4x4 CV joint so I had to change that with the new battery and the new CV joint it cost me about $500 USD in my country

I don't think it's fair to call the cup holders coming out of the dash stupid. I've used the 2008-2012 Toyota Hilux and i found the cup holders very useful to keep my drinks cold on long trips because the drink is right in from of the AC.
Agree. If you get coffee on your leg , get a lid. Or harden up.

Something else to think about is how you'll pay for it too. I'm obviously not sure of your career or financial situation but check out some chattel mortgage options as well as the usual personal or car loans. It might make the potential depreciation far easier to swallow especially around tax time. - AK

After getting out of a problematic Ford Ranger I decided to buy a unbreakable Hilux SR5 2015 (first gen 2.8 ltr). What a big fucking mistake that was!, 2 blown water pumps, clunky tail shaft, gearbox computer died, massive DPF issues, hand break that never worked on a slight slopes, warped brakes, deteriorating leather steering wheel and faulty buttons.

This is the best Hilux are just a different experience its just a cool truck for work family basically everything truck.
You reckon it's worth buying a Hilux that's done over 300000 km? I see them all the time on marketplace around that mileage.
On average people drive 10,000kms a year
No vehicle above 300k is a good idea.
Our Toyota at 270k was struggling. Not as much as some other brands, but still avoid that route

Heavy on fuel, timing chain rattles on start up) gutless, dpf only an issue if you don't let it fully do burn (buy scan guage to know what I'm talking about) plastic scratches easily when cleaning including dash so be careful cleaning,
Overall good reliable truck
Easy to service your self and Ive changed to oil changes every 10000 to prolong my second timing chain.
Fit a catch can
Needs airbags if you load it up
Need transmission cooler, mines made a huge difference
I'm never selling my 2018, should last 300k plus. At 105k from new
My first hand review on this vehicle is DPF issue was a pain in the arse. The engine is nothing special and a bit lame compared to some of the competition. The suspension is also a pain in the arse, literally. It is way too firm so much so Toyota has addressed it with the newer models. Toyota is famous for being conservative and boring so it had no heated seats and none of the new gen safety features. However it is reliable and the resale value will be the best so you are paying for that. Nowadays make sure you get Apple Car Play & Android Auto as car navigation is useless, and you can use Google Maps and talk to the car rather than touch your phone. Should be manditory for all cars as I see every 3rd person on their phones while they are driving.
And carry around a spare passenger wing mirror, so you stay legal and dont get defected...

Far more sensible and practical than any 70 series Land Cruiser iteration as an expedition/ safari vehicle and far less agricultural. In Southern Africa, a touring/ safari vehicle MUST be a Toyota; because of unrivaled durability, dependability, dealer network and parts availability. The Hilux also smashes everything else on cost of ownership. I drive a 2013 D4D Hilux Vigo twin cab, generously modified to tour the wilds of Southern Africa. It's boring, in exactly the way you want...nay need... this sort of vehicle to be!

Try Be Foward or Vigoasia I bought a 2018 extra cab from Be Foward and a 2013 extra cab from Vigoasia (vigo4U) I bought extra cabs because of Guyana stupid import laws but does sites have many double cabs etc
100% not worth becoming the guy with the ute. Every weekend will be booked in advance to help a mate move.

Mate we'd love to but we don't officially get the Tacoma here in Australia. Some are imported privately and I'll start trying to hunt one down for a video for you. I started watching as Throttle House, Savagegeese, Lovecars, Micah Muzio, Raiti’s Rides, and Regular Car reviews first started. Your videos are just as refreshing + good.
I see it almost as “no such thing as getting big, just continually getting better”. Compliments to the chef; you got your own unique personality, humor, and style.
As for cars I’d like to see, i can rock with many things used and new, gas, even electrics and hybrids (just not Telsas lol). Acura RSX’s, used Porsche 911’s, Toyota 4Runners, BMW 320is, Subaru WRX’s, Merc G-Wagons, hybrid BMW i8’s, Kia Stingers, Jaguar XE’s, Honda Civic Si’s, etc. It is not the car we are watching, it is what the person is sharing about the car. Doesn’t have go 0-60 in 3 seconds, it just needs to have a good or unique story.

I think about it this way: I watch Throttle House and Scotty Kilmer’s humor instead of Doug Demure and StraightPipers because I actually like what they have to say and want know what they think of it. There is a often background focus on the value of reliability and affordability because they themselves drive cars that breakdown often and aren’t made of money bags. They make good jokes and want to have a good laugh. I like Redline Review’s information and commentary, but sometimes I like AndieTheLab’s, Regular Car Review’s and Micah Muzio’s personality.
Things like: How dog friendly is a particular car?
how many blokes can you fit in the rear seats?
what weird emotions, silly memories, and fun passion does the particular driving experience evoke?
Not everyone can drift supercar Ferarri’s like Jeremy Clarkson or stare at them like Doug 😱 Demure; but most people can appreciate the unique personal story of a James May while driving a simple Toyota RAV4.

have a pre 2015 Hilux which is ok but heavy on fuel. Guy at work bought the 2018 model on 3 year lease, had it 3 months and it died on the highway driving from Toowoomba to Brisbane, towed away and left without a car for 4 days whilst DPF had to be replaced, he couldn't wait till lease was up to get rid of it. Other problems with models from 2015 onwards were fragile front ends, any add on's like bully etc resulted in front suspension failure every 18 months as seen by my cousin who worked for Santos. Fast forward to March 2024 and Toyota has been fined $2 billion dollars by the ACCC after a massive class action that exposed Toyota as deliberately lying and misleading customers with known faulty DPF's for 5 years on HILux , Prado and another model.So much for Toyota reliability! As for buying a used Hilux 2015 onwards? I would not touch one. Hilux has lost it's crown to Ranger in 4 x 4 and 3rd in 4 x 2. My son and his girl are looking at buying one but I am trying to talk them out of it, resale models has now come down considerably as people are now becoming aware of Toyota Dud Factor, and can be bought at almost bargain prices. Oh what a feeling!

I have a toyota hilux it is a 2WD cab chassis with an flat bed tray and it is just called a hilux it is 25 years old the motor does not burn oil has the 22R motor has 429000 kilometers on it but it great and it cost me $1500 l will let you it is in pretty good nick no rust a bit of surface rust no fancy gadgets no tech a carby extremely analog which equals not much to go wrong and not much has gone wrong no service history there are a few jobs to do on it spare parts no problem every thing that l need to fix it is available l will be finishing of this winter and the air con works also the work mate still has wind up windows build a ute with a good motor it will last for ever l am keeping it and l will pass it on to one of my children
@Master Yoshi you must live in the USA because in Australia we only got the 22R engine in the hilux in the mid 1990s good to read you have done 700000 miles in your car l have a mere 260000miles on my hilux

Very glad l found out so much information on the 22R engine and also how well and over engineered the hi lux is and how good the engine is many things have bean surprised the engine is l know this hilux is going to outlast me but l am not worried it could last another 25 years as long as l don't have any accidents in it safety is not one of its strong points but l am careful as can be and l am retired
The challenge is finding one that hasn’t had the guts ripped out of it by a bone headed tradie or grandpa that’s pulled a 5 tonne load around the countryside
