Nico and Andy Warhol were very important for the success of the Velvet Underground. Why is Doug Yule not mentioned?

I think he’s referring to the people who have passed away as well as helped the Velvet Underground succeed. Doug Yule made amazing contributions to the band, but is still alive.
They probably didnt mentioned him because he continued the band without the founding members.
Cale hates the fact the band made really great music from 1968 to 1970 that he had nothing to do with. He wasn’t about to thank the person who replaced him.

Nico just sung on 3 songs for the first album but she probably deserved recognition for being a part of a seminal album, along with her solo career.
It's likely that the Velvets got the deal with Verve because of Nico
Nico was the big star in the velvets originally because she was already famous. Obviously she wasn’t the creative force of the early group (although her solo stuff is good I think). So i guess it is recognition for her giving them the initial step up they needed.
Nico's solo album Chelsea Girl was pretty good also. Check out the song These Days which was recorded with Jackson Browne. It was recorded in 1967 immediately following her work recording on those songs from The Velvet Underground debut. Im a big velvet underground/lou reed fan, and I used to say I like everything except those songs Nico sang on from the first album. But then I learned to appreciate those songs and her voice, and listened to her Chelsea Girl record, and i think those songs with VU wouldn't be right with a different vocalist. Like All Tomorrow's Parties, terrific track. Her solo album has a very similar early Velvet Underground vibe if you are into that sort of thing.

What a beautiful band, one of the greatest ever. And now Lou Reed is in the Hall of Fame too. If John Lennon was the Abraham Lincoln of Rock and Roll, surely Lou Reed was its Teddy Roosevelt. From the time I was a kid in the Sixties, I always admired Lou's genius and sly sense of humor, and his ability to out-Dylan Dylan. May this great man rest in peace, the great hero of rock and roll.

Doug Yule
It's a disgrace that Doug Yule was left out of this. I'm not sure how the rest of the band can sit comfortably with this glaring omission. Yule was a significant band member, vocalist and co-writer for pretty much half the Velvets recorded output (at least re the studio albums). Shameful and pretty cruel.

Moreover, it was a no-brainer to induct them in their first year of eigibility. The Velvet Underground were not particularly popular but certainly nobody disputes their huge influence. Should have been inducted in their very first year of eligibility, which would have allowed Sterling to participate... I get why they showed up to accept but there is a strong argument for not showing up. Unfortunate that Lou sort of kissed up to this institution.
Joy Division's main influence is Velvet Underground. Tony Wulson from Factory Records used same name Warhol used for this Club. Love VU and always will. They changed music forever.

Iggy Pop / Stooges were a huge influence too on JD. Especially the album Iggy made with Bowie in Berlin, the Idiot.

What about Doug Yule?
They’d have definitely brought Doug Yule for this occasion. I know it is difficult to have Doug for the reunion tour because of Cale’s presence, but he is the official member of The Velvet Underground and the third album doesn’t sound the same without his contribution. It seems Lou probably didn’t care who else are inducted, but Cale is the one who felt insecure about his legacy.
Idk what Cale has to worry about, his kegacy is the VU and so is Doug's. It seems like often band members just get sore at their replacements even if there's nothing personal about it. Both were great musicians.
Yule’s exclusion is a crime. As great as those first two albums were, the last two were equally as influential if not more. To not even be mentioned along with Nico and Andy makes it obvious that Doug was deliberately snubbed.

andymorphic67 Doug deserves credit for being part of the Velvets but also putting up with Lou in the 1970s as part of Lou's back up band. I heard that at one show in Europe Lou shot a huge needle of heroin into his arm. Five minutes before he had to go on Lou passed out, the only one who they could think of too pull off the playing and singing was Doug Yule given his past history with Lou in tge Velvets. So Doug pulled the leather jacket off Lou and grabbed Lou's sunglass and went on as Lou for the show and surprisingly pulled it off. Lou eventually came around and heard what happened, and thanked Doug for covering for him. Doug quite the band shortly after that incident.😎
@@54markl John Cale at least gives Nico credit (she had died by this point). The other members never considered her a full member of the band, but that first album would definitely be missing something without her. Yule played a major role on the last two albums, and no one even mentions him. That's possibly a Reed/Cale thing; they refused to have him on the reunion either.

This is so strange to watch now. The Velvets and all the like-minded bands who followed them were a part of my adolescence through early adulthood, and yet I never once considered them a part of the R&R mainstream, nor measured them by that metric. To my mind, they existed completely outside of the bounds of the crass capitalism which dictated success or failure for so many others, and if you view them through that prism...then they were abject failures. Their sales were dismal, they reached only a handful of the faithful...no, it just doesn't work. They have merit...value, if you will, for so many of us because they managed to totally transcend those boundaries to reach out and touch our heartstrings. Thank you Lou, Sterling, Mo, John, Nico, and Andy (and many others, as well)...what goes on in your mind?

The one award ceremony where the inductee is actually encouraged if not expected to give a really long speech, especially a band, as each member is expected to thank all of their people and then give a little summary about how they got started or why the were important or how they overcame the odds, and The Velvets still have to be too cool for school, like they were all still on heroin, and give probably the shortest induction speech of all time, especially Lou. Gotta love them man, they're the real deal.

Nico is what got them attention early on with her beauty and her monotone way of singing. It's also what made Andy want to throw money at them and promote them. So yes Nico is a VIP in the band for those very reasons. The first album with her singing was and is their most popular.
Nico deserved that honor...Doug too.
Mel Bee Andy was interested in the Velvet Underground before nico joined. Nico was added to the band by Andy because he was interested in them.

Why is the Velvet Unground in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame? I thought a Hall of Fame was for those who master their craft and is better than the rest? Like having Top 40 hits on The Billboard Top 100 and having albums in the Top 10 of the Billboard 200. It's like if the Baseball Hall of Fame put Aaron Boone in the Hall for his walk off home run during Game 7 of the 2003 ALCS but the rest of his career was shit. Doesn't make sense.
The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame isn't there for the acts who simply have hits & sales on the pop charts, it's there to honor the artists who left an historic & cultural impact/significance on the development of rock & roll. The Velvet Underground pretty much did leave an impact with their innovations & experimentations on their first 4 albums & those records who the general public brought inspired them to start a band. Not to mention, they started the whole "underground music" culture & lots of genres including punk, new wave, alternative, electronic, metal & more would be traced back to the VU. So before you ask why they are in, maybe learn about their history first.

John Cale is the genius who really made the VU's music memorable. Without him, as Maureen said in a long interview in 9 parts, they were just something different. Meaning, a band like other bands.

And yes, it’s shameful Doug Yule wasn’t there or even mentioned. Allegedly Cale and Reed were the ones responsible. He wasn’t some side guy - he was an ACTUAL member that was on more tracks than Cale. Sour grapes and revisionism at its worst.
