    Today we check out economy picking - is it really the world's fastest guitar technique or just a cheap trick or shortcut to speed? As always we check out the biggest benefits, advantages and disadvantages and after this video you can decide if you want to use this technique yourself. :)

      I tend to do economy picking naturally sometimes and i think its really useful for certain runs and licks. Somethings are really hard to play with only alternate picking and there is no point trying to force it, in my opinion. I suck though :D But i have been wondering for a long time would you use more elbow movement or only wrist when combining faster licks that involve also alternate picking? For example really annoyingly tricky (aka fast) licks from sonata arctica song - wolf and raven, economy picking comes naturally on string switches as its (atleast for me) impossible to get to the speed only alternate picking. Thanks in advance for your possible answer :D

    As my teacher said, economy and alternate picking are just two different techniques with different feeling and sound. Alternate picking sounds more articulate and economy can sound like a flow

      @MIAN BM I am not dissing it. It is "A" technique to be combined with others. You should be able to do that 3 note/string with alternate picking as well, because you don't want to always be stuck in any particular pattern. It is a straight line pattern. This question would best be asked of Steve Morse:) I came upon it naturally, when I was playing professionally for a few years. But it does one thing good... There is a pattern that I regularly practice both ways, and to be honest, I find the alternate style to be faster. But that isn't always true either. Just don't rely on it, use where it works:)

    Thanks for this lesson! Economy picking has been my go to for a year now since its way more flued technique than alternating everything. Btw short review on your shredding course. Im currently on arpeggios part and its so well put down. I highly recommend your course to anyone from beginner to more advanced since you have covered it all. Personally cause i'm mainly rhythm player and singer i loved the first parts, so i understood how to divide hard sections for smaller parts in certain songs. And now im in time with our drummer! Your course has concepts that you can spend years to practise and still with your explaining get the basics quite easily. I can finally PLAY atleast some of the music that I have listened and sang for my life. Thanks Bernth!

    I know its late, but maybe theres still somebody who sees it,
    question: for sometime i´ve heard some of you guys in that community saying something like:"
    While you´re playing sweep-picking, it maybe comfortable to change the angle of the pick." So you´re hand
    is hold to the direction in which you want to play (hope you understand what I mean xD).
    Would you also recomment it for economy-picking, or isn´t there just enough time for it?
    Good day out to everyone

    Really great video, I have been playing 12 years myself and have never used economy picking, just alternate and legato. Recently began learning a Born of Osiris solo and some parts are just so fast it does not seem like a good investment of time keep alternate picking some sections when I have started messing around with economy picking at super high speeds and it feels much better and more fluid when you have fractions of a second to play the notes. I do agree that it does seem a bit awkward at slow speeds and alternate or legato is probably better but at least for me, economy picking makes sense to do at high speeds. It certainly is not cheating, if anything economy picking should be standard knowledge since the carry over to sweep picking is very beneficial and after learning economy picking I would imagine sweep picking would not be such a huge jump. Learning sweep picking was tough for me since it felt so disjointed from all other techniques, just my opinion.

    Great stuff Bernth your channel is vey good compared to most I see on TH-cam so Best of luck...I never thought of economy picking as cheating I learned the technique right from Frank Gambale at a very young age here in the states so it’s second nature to me and I’m most comfortable with it for most scenarios although I have met guitar purists who do feel it’s cheating which is interesting since sweeping is acceptable to them, even Eddie VanHalen believed his tapping was cheating so often he would turn his back on his audience so he wouldn’t be judged by other players and after his fame you couldn’t find a player who wasn’t tapping or using a vibrato bar, so in my opinion one should learn every style they can and use them as tools to achieve various textures, speeds or phrases that may otherwise be “unplayable” even after hours or days with the metronome, there’s nothing more frustrating than having a great lick or run in your head and not being able to play it due to lack of technical proficiency.

  • @HallwayMusic91
    @HallwayMusic91 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hey Bernth, I heard this thing a few months ago called Directional picking that supposedly combines elements of alternate and economy picking. Could you do a video about that?

    • @73maxoneit
      @73maxoneit 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      "Directional picking is a form of economy picking that requires no pre-planning.
      Directional picking can be applied to everything you play with the pick - from
      simple arpeggios, through to basic rock and blues licks, scale sequences etc. It is
      a very efficient way to develop speed.
      The 'rules' of directional picking are as follows:
      1) When on a single string, use alternate picking.
      2) When changing strings ascending, you use a downstroke regardless of what
      came before it.
      3) When changing strings descending, you use an upstroke regardless of what
      came before it."
      But I have never pre-planned my economy picking...so in a nutshell, directional = economy as what this guy is describing is actually economy picking if you think about it.
      Economy picking does not "remove" alternate picking from the equation, as when you are on a single string or you have an even number of note before you (for example) change string ascending, then you are using pure alternate (like A string: down-up-down-up then G string is hit with a down stroke, pure alternate). Of course if you pre-plan this example I just gave you, you could do A string: up-down-up-down then down on the G string (and good luck with the accents :-) )

    Around 2:50 you start mentioning the picking angle and it seems like you are actually discussing downward pick slanting. Hello Bernth, I like your channel very much and I am also a patreon of your channel. I used to do economy picking naturally (directional picking) and my teacher taught me that this is the right method. After some time I went to another teacher and he introduced me to alternate picking and told me economy picking is not the right tool to play fast. Correct method is alternate picking. I practiced alternate picking a lot but sill mess up sometimes. Then I watched Tom Hess's video which shows that economy picking is the right technique and alternate picking requires far more practice and time which can be saved by economy picking and it is a myth that alternate picking is better. Please lemme know what should i Practice so that I don't waste time juggling between these two techniques?

    I would only consider economy picking to be a sort of cheat, if a person sucked at alternate picking. In other words, it could be considered a cheat, if it prevented a person from working diligently on their overall picking technique. To me, you need economy picking for certain licks. Alternate picking the same line may be impossible, or at the very least sound completely different, as each note is being articulated. So as long as it's an additional tool, and not a crutch, it could in no way be considered a cheat. Besides, it's not like economy picking makes difficult lines easy. It may only make certain lines somewhat less difficult.

    anything that leads to more efficient motions isn't "cheating", music isn't a meritocracy and with the amount of possibilities in doing exercises on the guitar there is always more but one should appreciate small victories while at times working yourself to the bone, i've played for 15 years and i still struggle with economy picking large string groups on a purely physiological level, but mentaly it's the same as 2 and 3 string groupings, master possibilities on 2 strings and the rest gets much easier, i'd still have to grind an extra 15 years to get this good though. :P

    the sweep can throw you off and you naturally make jerking motions

    I laughed at "some consider it a cheat" :) It's not a game .. or a sport .. how can you cheat? You don't get paid by hand motion. Whatever fits the sound you need!

    That might sound chezzy but i was doing economy picking by my self.
    I think it has to do with my obsesion over technique.
    I would just sit for countless hours switching from one way of picking to another to find the best one. From one angle on my left hand to another , from pressing down the strings horizontaly to having an angle etc etc.
    One season i was in the concept of using the minimum force posiple with my fingers and sm1 told me this : Dont underestimate any technique.
    This stayed in my mind for a while untill it became clear when you said in one of your videos that u have to learn to switch from technique to technique and i was just blown by it !
    Btw Bernth , if you read this. Is this the path to become fluent in technique ?
    Thanks !

    It's not cheating, but it's not universal. You can play everything with alternate (like Paul Gilbert), but you can play only some things with ecomony

      What would things you can´t play with economy?

    • @shredd5705
      @shredd5705 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Aqua-pl8qw Anything with 2 notes per string, that has more than 2 strings. Anything string skipping.. anything you want to sound as aggressive as possible. Anything with fast picking on one string. Anything with 4 notes per string and multiple strings

      @@shredd5705 Thank you. The part about agressive sound was very important to me since I´m working at rock guitar skills right now

    • @shredd5705

      @@Aqua-pl8qw Well economy picking will always sound smooth and gentle, notes are flowing in a fluid, connected way. But it's very hard to get aggressive picking tone or accented notes with economy. Two different sounds, with different purposes imo. Alternate is harder to play in some situations, but more universal and it doesn't break the groove. Some people use both, but it's really hard to master even one style, and like Paul Gilbert shows, you don't have to sweep or play economy, and you can still play pretty damn amazing (and fast) stuff. He 100% alternate picks everything and never uses sweeps anymore (since the 80's or so)

    Cross string Alternate picking just requires more hours of practice and I don't think it's worth it so for every guitar beginners they can totally skip it. Economy picking is the technique to learn
